I remember when the PS2 first came out there was a shortage of them, and a rumor was going around that it was because Saddam Hussein was buying them all up to link into a super computer to run his WMD program

Does this actually work? You can just connect a bunch of PS3 and they'll do parallel processing or whatever it's called?

I just repasted mine (white super slim) and set it up, it's now pasted and immaculate inside, SSD installed.

You probably do have to write some custom software as well. Even if this does somehow work, there's no way it works straight out of the box. At that point, however, I do have to wonder why not just use a bunch of PCs instead, as PS3 is basically 20-year-old hardware at this point.
>>
>>720992606
It doesn't "just werk"
It would take a janky, jury rigged system to get them to communicate with each other, on top of whatever custom nightmare OS spin off they programmed to run the thing.
You could then maybe process some stuff with it across the multiple multicore CPU's, but as I understand the PlayStation's hardware was a nightmare for regular video game programmers to deal with, now your juggling a few thousand of them, trying to get them to play nice with each other.
>>
Gonna start Zone of Enders Collection HD and maybe Sonic Unleashed.
>>
I keep it on my battlestation ready to use when my mood takes me. Must say plugging it into my oled screen means said oled does a lot of heavy lifting visually.
>>
>>720991442
Imagine if a year or two after somebody updated the consoles after OtherOS was removed
>>
>>720992154
No the idea was that they were taking the chips from them to build missiles
>>
I will play black flag on PS3 instead of my PS5.
>>
>>720993370
Incorrect, the PS3 Phat originally gave you the option to install Linux.

>>
>>720994964
The flavors that run all of the giant server clusters in the world
>>
>>720995015
Not the same thing. The PS3's are all being run as one singular giant machine, not as a more modern style of cluster.
Did Docker or Kubernetes even exist at the time?
>>

i am personally ambivalent to whether or not you continue to post this in threads

If you don't have a fully working CECHA01 hooked up ready to play RapeLay. You're not a real /v/tard.
>>720991849
That was Iran I think, Koreans built their own super computer from sticks and rocks.
>>
>>720995236
Thats not how it works. Most "Supercomputers" even back then used job scheduler systems like Cray or SLURM to send tasks to computing slaves which typically ran the same OS as the master scheduler. You are thinking mainframes. Clustered computing and job sharing systems are almost as old as UNIX itself.

Watching movies mostly since it's too easy to just copy a video file to USB, pug it in and play.

Occasionally revisiting classics also. Went on a MGS binge last month, unfortunately the disc drive started fucking up in the middle of MGS4.

Nothing, it's been sitting on a shelf for years. There are still a few PS3 games I'd like to play but I'll most likely play those in RPCS3 for the vastly improved quality and performance.
>>
>>720991678
Alternative super computers cost billions of dollars.
>>
>>720997656
i wonder if marketing this use case without it being a hilarious eyesore is why they switched from external to internal HDDs before releasing the console outside japan.
>>
>>720986047
My fat PS3 has the yellow light of death which makes me sad. I got a super slim one with the intent to mod it, but I've been super lazy and haven't done it yet.
>>
>>720986047
BD player, Movian and Netflix. RPCS3 plays all the games I try, at better resolutions and framerate, so no reason to game on it.
>>
>>720993269
>At that point, however, I do have to wonder why not just use a bunch of PCs instead
I think it's just to say "I did this thing" to probably test his skills. Like running Doom various things.

>>720991678
It was cheaper than comparable super computers at the time, some universities did the same. Don't forget part of the price was subsidized, consoles are sold at a loss.

did the govt actually use PS3 back in the day because of the power of THE CELL?

The upper CPU count limit of Linux is 4096. This could probably be patched to be higher if you had a machine with that many CPUs, but upstream doesn't support that.
