Why couldn't Assassin's Creed just be about alternate history? Why did it need the Abstergo shit? Why did it need to turn into a fucking RPG starting with Origins?

>"Why couldn't Assassin's Creed just be about alternate history?"
They wanted a connected theme

>"Why did it need the Abstergo shit?"
Easiest way to link stuff, plus they were clearly intending for Desmond to become the newest assassin before 3 bombed comparatively.

>"Why did it need to turn into a fucking RPG starting with Origins?"
Because by Syndicate people were tired of the formula and Ubisoft are fucking idiots who thought grind would add variety.

Back in 2007 I genuinely thought it was just going to be medieval hitman, I was totally blindsided by all the modern day shit when I got it and really didn't like it.
>>
>>721012246

The funny thing is that they don´t even use it for modern day assassin action or anything. Like, i thought the idea with Desmond was that he himself would have an assassin role eventually once his body managed to keep up with all the animus memories but it never really happened. I mean, it kind of did but it was pretty disappointing.

Maybe it would be more interesting if the people in the future could somehow communicate or interfere in a way that it could actually alter the past? I fail to see the point of all of it being mere simulations as we understand it. I mean, what´s the point of the Isu if you can´t use them to justify crazy stuff like breaking reality?

Same experience. I was like 11 years old and it was such a lame buzzkill I instantly turned off the game. I went back to god of war and prince of persia which were actual video games meant to be fun

Based. Ezio's games are still fun though. Unlike the RPGs. The series had a schizo identity since the first until it started slowly dying with Black Flag and ended with Unity. Also reminder Origins was written by some hollywood nepobaby feminist who didn't know what the fuck AC is, or history in general. Like portraying Caesar's assassins as freedom fighting good guys.

The new ones would be: Origins > Valhalla > Odyssey.

Yeah I hated the scifi shit in the first one and I now hate the rpg fantasy shit. Asscreed is a series that perpetually disappoints
>>
>>721017659
The whole assassin vs templar thing was all over the place from the start and went to complete shit as the series went on.
At first it was just secret organisations and they had a bit of law vs chaos going on with templars being more about control and assassins free will (though it's not like the organisation itself was ran like that at any point really) so it leaned into assassins as the good guys but it was still okay. As the series went on and especially as it came closer to modern times the historical figures started to get weird and did dumb shit like french revolution was a templar plot, when it would have been much more interesting to be assassins going too far or hecking wholesome marx. Maybe it was right, maybe not, but it started to be hard to see that assassins are always figures the writers like and they have a clear bias to certain political views regardless if it would make sense for the organisation.
>>
>>721019038
Unity had such a shit story. It put the revolution on the side for a fucking romance. I was even more mad because I expected Shay to instigate it, and Arno finally killing the mad dog for all his crimes. Instead MUH ELISE! MESIEU DELLASERRE!

Well, what you've said is the modern day storyline from Shadows. Abstergo rewriting history via the AI entity so that they can freely shape the world as they see fit via Isu weaponry.
>>
>>721012246
The modern storyline could have been great like Deus Ex, except they butchered it as early as AC2. Always seemed like Ubisoft resented it and so they didnt fully lean into it enough. And now AC isn't even about assassins anymore it's just a generic fantasy action RPG slop
>>
I like AC1 the best.

>Why did it need the Abstergo shit?
This Is the reason I didn't pick up the first game years ago. Such a simple basic concept and it ruined the whole franchise even before it started.

AC1 > AC2 > Revelations > Brotherhood >>>>>>>>>>> AC3
Didnt play any after 3 because it sucked so much

I wanna play black flag again but I don't want to play for sixty hours. How long does it take to get good? I forget
>>
>>721012246
>Why did it need the Abstergo shit?
Because it wanted to be good and sovlful, which is why AC1's setting and atmosphere, past and present, are unmatched to this day
>>
>>721012246
I hated the modern storyline as a kid because I just wanted to play historical assassin power fantasy but now I'm older and more mature I appreciate science fiction and I find it really interesting and unique
>>
the scaling ruins the 'rpg' games
>>
>>721020000
Sailing in black flag was fun, but it was barely an AC game. Everything else since 3 does indeed suck, especially once in went into the "RPG" looter thing.
>>
>>721020323
Even as early as AC2 they were adding useless features like renovating buildings and town management which no one wanted and had nothing to do with assassinations

>Why did it need the Abstergo shit?
Because it makes the brand cohesive and stories make sense. If you didn't do that then every single game ends with you being edged because you would theoretically only ever learn what happened to all their work and their future plights through hamfisted dialogue that makes no sense or through games being set in the near future. Abstergo being there justifies why you would go back to those time periods, why you would even care that the Templars are getting anything, why you would even care about the Assassins, etc.

This has been covered in their GDC 10 year overview talk about why they bothered with it at all.
>Why did it need to turn into a fucking RPG starting with Origins?
Because Unity essentially killed the brand due to its enormous bugs and controversy on top of years and years of people saying Assassin's Creed's gameplay was terrible, uneventful, and way too easy. This led to them soft rebooting the series with Origins with completely different gameplay, different mechanics, and different focuses. Even the the RPG aspects did not matter at all in Origins outside of gating you from areas until you leveled up because it was so easy to upgrade your equipment just from random crap you found exploring or killing guarded chariots in cities and you could just equip the strongest item you got as a drop and be fine. It wasn't until Odyssey went full retard with builds that it became a problem, and then Valhalla, Mirage, and Shadows all addressed that by throwing builds and DIablo Loot out like it should have for set equipment.

>>721014025
Shadows whenever it drops to $40. Woot has it at $44 but I'm not risking a PAL copy.
>>
It should've been a blend of Hitman and Tomb Raider. How do you fuck that up?

I don't hate nuAC and I prefer it to majority of old games. I'm surprised slop like AC3 and Unity isn't more resented around here. The problem is that the levels aren't any longer designed with assassination in mind. Often you're fighting an enemy camp in an open field with little space to run and hide or some kind of large boss. Shadows had some steps in the right direction with Naoe's gameplay but Ubisoft is struggling to reconnect the pieces into a cohesive whole. The leveling sucks obviously because it just exists to sell you boosters and thus doesn't feel like a real progression but more like a gate. They could do better with it.

Unity is underrated if anything, although I feel that's been changing over the years
>>
>>721020635
It has one of the best maps in the series, has a solid MC even if Aya pussywhips him, has some of the best DLC in the series, has decent assassinations, and none of the RPG mechanics mattered so it still felt like an older AC game despite this. What are your issues with it?

>>721020561
>I'm surprised slop like AC3 and Unity isn't more resented around here.
Unity had a resurgence due to Odyssey making people realize how bad the RPG formula could be and allowed people to reflect on it without the dogpiling of the bugs and launch period leading to a lot of people realizing the many good things it did and tried to do. Sure, the parkour is a bit weird to get used to and some people don't like it, and then there's Arno who is their most bland MC yet, but overall it was solid.

The problem with Mirage was that they just slapped an impression of what old AC games felt like over Valhalla's engine and called it a day. Sure, Bordeaux did a great job with Baghdad, but ultimately it felt just like an imitation of a game from 2010 which is what people were getting tired of by the time Syndicate came around. I too think that what they should do with the series is Hitman in a historic setting but I doubt Ubisoft is capable of offering deep open stealth missions and I REALLY doubt that's what people are buying these games for anyway.
>>
>>721021397
>I REALLY doubt that's what people are buying these games for anyway.
It's not. It's the open world parkouring aspect with the ability to engage in combat if they want without consequence and assassinate people how they feel. People don't want Splinter Cell or Hitman, that would immediately kill the series. Mirage and Shadows are very likely the farthest they will ever go in prioritizing stealth.
I imagine a lot of people are also like me where it's historical tourism + checklist gaming when you feel like doing that. AC and Ubisoft open world games in general are incredible for second screen gaming and relaxing that way. It's fun to clear the world to 100%.
