I grew up in Mexico. We had pinatas at every birthday party and Christmas. I don't think I've ever seen a pinata shaped like a donkey. Pinatas are almost always some pop culture character, although I understand perfectly well why those aren't ever depicted in drawing meant to represent Mexico. The stars are really common, I don't know why more people don't use star pinatas instead of the donkeys.

>Guacamelee is a chicano game
It's a chilango game, technically. The creative lead was a Mexican expat living in Canada. So by no definition of the word is it a "chicano" game.

But it co-opts the "Cinco de Mayo" aesthetic that they use in America, ergo, Chicano.

It uses the same stylized/idealized imagery that virtually everyone associates with Mexico. Your average modern Mexican neighborhood, devoid of all recognizable landmarks, would be virtually indistinguishable from any other neighborhood in any country. And nobody wants to play a game about someone living in a slum colonia in a house made of plaster and corrugated sheet metal, drinking Coca-Cola out of a sandwich bag while sitting on your property fence made of discarded tires.

Oh, and nothing to do with this discussion, but someone usually asks, so I'll preemptively explain the Coca-Cola in a sandwich bag: Mexico charges an additional deposit on glass bottles, the same way the US and I believe the UK charge a deposit on aluminum cans and plastic bottles. You used to be able to avoid paying the deposit if you brought in an empty bottle to replace the one you were buying, which is why Mexican households had empty soda bottles everywhere. Most corner shop owners would also let you avoid paying the deposit if you let them keep the bottle you were buying, so they would empty your Coke into a sandwich bag and a give you a straw.
