I couldnt sleep. No more pain pills so I stir in pain. Since then I imported the dragon into the game as a full skeletal mesh with a simple flying animation. I got spooked at the end, I forgot my old boss had a walking animation and this behemoth goes right for me

>>721059003>I couldnt sleep. No more pain pills so I stir in pain.I read this in Max Payne's voice.Man your game is shaping up real nice, but I wonder if it might look better with a splash of color somewhere. It's a bit... grey and brown? A bit monotone? Maybe that's your goal, but it could catch the eye a bit better with just a hint somewhere.
Are there any RECENT games that didn't do well on release, and it took them at least a year before being noticed and finally seeing some success?Last example I can think of is Among Us, and that's obviously due to covid. Can this happen without people being locked in their houses?

>>721059731Good question, 100% flip between. It is vastly easier to possess 2 pawns with 1 camera with two hard fixed positions than trying to move the camera without it looking weird because of the proportions. You would have the 1st person pawn always behind the camera when in 3rd person mode so you never see it by mistake.

You can't make a mistake in animation, because it would be caught by anyone, so you will fix it on the production stage, and everything else is very flexible in its approach so, it's actually hard to do right.

Expanding her moveset. The divekick stolen from castlemania is intended to help in situations where you helplessly get contact damaged from jumping into an enemy but there's a few fun interactions since it's still technically tagged as sword damage. Will probably need to have a think about balance because now melee is too strong (and fun) on its own rather than using resources to shoot things. Or maybe figure out an upgrade system idk>>721058373Hey I think I've seen you around somewhere... wink

>>721075102About 27k vertices and faces. I was concerned it's a bit high since it's significantly more than most other models I've made, but it hasn't been an issue so far. I'll post a webm with the goblins in action in a moment.

>>721054342Putting localisation in hard is hilariously retarded given that most engines have made it as easy as possible and if you're not using an engine you just need to send an event to everything with strings to display text based on it's key. The hardest part about localisation is the UI sizing.Tutorials and level design shouldnt be in easy. Level design is filling out content based on game design, mechanics and goals and tutorials are only easy if you're making them boring to interact with and not interactive turning them into a game design challenge.
>>721075869That was the intent yeah. I initially had fixed jump arcs but realized that would kinda suck if I wanted bullet hell elements.
>>721070809neat, I really like your game
spent some more time last night working on the sheath, need to make some adjustments to the animation so it doesn't look like the sword is going through the sheath. Also reworked the shield a little bit, replacing a texture that was already used on the knight's model so it's less monotonous.>>721077078hell yeah look at them go. I'd recommend looking into flock behaviors and boids so they don't stick together that much. Did that for my goblins and thank to that they look like they move as a group and are even able to surround you instead of forming a beeline.>>721070809very cool, Touhou bros sure are talented.
>>721078695Looks good. I recommend doing what the guys at HAL Labs did with Link's sword and shrink the sword's blade as it enters the scabbard so it doesn't look like it's clipping.
>>721078695Looking good. Getting the sheathing animation just right can be a pain. Most games don't use scabbards at all for this very reason, or just get it to a "good enough" point. I have been meaning to deal with flocking behaviour eventually. At the moment I'm making them occasionally pick a destination to the side of the player, to simulate that behaviour. But it's much too random now, sometimes it seems they don't do it at all, sometimes they just run around, and once in a while they appear to actually surround the player. On the plus side right now they have a goofy, erratic behaviour that feels very goblinlike.

>>721080957>modify that rotation vector to get away from other gobbosI think I get it, but I'm not sure how to do that here. I'm using unity's navmesh agents to make them move, which already causes them to avoid each other. If one agent is in front of another it will try to walk around it. Just did a quick test with a higher value for the radius of obstacle avoidance though, looks better already.I need to fine-tune the AI for sure. I have various systems in place to make the goblins try to circle around, retreat, and find good positioning, but I don't have any logic behind their choices, it's just random.
>>721081773>which already causes them to avoid each other. If one agent is in front of another it will try to walk around it.oh really, that's great. Godot's shittier in that regard since afaik all the avoidance does is allowing agents to push each other out of the way. Glad you got it sort it out, can't wait to see more of those gobbers of yours.

making a game that requires wearing gloves
that's all for the scabbard and the animation. Added a trail when pulling it out for some extra kino. Also, Fygoon's trick of playing around with the scale of the weapon to avoid it going through the scabbard worked great, so thanks for that!
>>721086717>>721087196thanks>>721086868no, google images. Idea was human form wear festival style masks. Then they get more monstrous yokai forms as second stages. Ripping off the Vizard/Arrancar from Bleach. >>721087020in the future maybe, seems simple enough as a mob enemy

>>721089601Looks great. Glad to hear the fix I saw on a Youtube video where some guy was yapping about "Secrets You Might Not Know About Zelda" helped.>>721090014Glad to see Rigboner over there remains. I like poking fun at my older sister (she's the opposite of me when it comes to Japan) with the fact Japanese mythology just randomly includes a raccoon dog with giant testicles; as much as I rag on them, it's about as based as the ancient Egyptians having Babi, a baboon god who just chills with a boner.
Longsword-type weapons (falcatas and the Vorpal Reaver) can now be used in such a way that Fygoon turns into a spinning whirlwind of death.
>>721090025idk, I know the masks themselves are common. It's mostly just the full yokai forms being sealed in the masks. After the player defeats them they can take the masks for themselves to use the powers like Megaman

Just yesterday I got a bump in visit but for some reason most of them were on a previous game and not the current one. lmao, I guess.>>721091973the bottom right part? yeah I straight copied that from DD. The game is sort of inspired by it, at least the combat and some other aspects. Now pawns tho.
>>721092185I think we've all been there. Good luck bro.I do think it's good experience to try to do more than you are really capable of. You'll find the the road blocks much faster than if you start with something small, simple, but uninteresting. If you have room to fail, trying something hard is going to teach you a lot. But doing something easy will let you learn the very basics first, which is obviously helpful too. Do what makes you happy.
I recently realized how easy it is to just make a clone of something. When you clone a design that works, it just works, and you expand on it. When you try to change something about it, all of a sudden you have 10 different ideas and options and I get choice paralysis and give up.
>>721090114glad you like it anon. I'd love to try that suggestion but sadly, the way I have the sheath animation blend with the rest of the body doesn't allow me to move the body while executing it. Reason is that I allow that animation to play when standing still but also while moving, so I have to filter out the body out of the animation, respecting the body of the idle/run animation instead.>>721092185start with something small. I went with a mix of Nuclear Throne and DOOM with a knight that could deflect shots with his sword.>>721093629agreed. There's no need to reinvent the wheel, just make something fun to play.
>>721093629As the guy from >>721092185, I can say that it's easy to make a jank-ass clone of something. I've been monkeying with variables and rebuilding the same basic set of functions for the last three weeks trying to get it to work properly and feel good. It's sort of my comfort project, as everything beyond that one core bit of the project is unknown and frightening. And I now remember how many iterations and how much grug work it took to get that one thing how I basically like it. I made the same thing a dozen times experimenting with different approaches until it felt right. The choice paralysis thing, though? For me it's less choice paralysis and more competency paralysis. "Huh, this might be fun. Let's see how I'd do this." turns into 150 Youtube videos, 20 arguments with AI, the algorithm recommending me videos showing every time someone has already done that idea better than my initial idea...

>>721094536You only have one boss left to beat. Yourself.
>>721094727>you make me feel hopelessI was hoping for the opposite lol. The oomph is just some basic hitstop and screenshake, I bet you would be able to implement that without any trouble. It's just that before making that I played a lot of Nuclear Throne, so I knew how I wanted the game to feel and how to make it. Also followed the rule of "if the bullets seem weak, make them bigger" which turned out to be a good idea.>>721094728kino post
>>721094980I'm not a fan of the screen shake but your game play has a dinamicity that mine somehow still lacks.Although now I see that you took a more gameplay first experience while I'm wasting time trying to make the environments look. If there's one thing I should learn is that I got to invest more time in setting up the traps and combat situations
watching a team that fucked you over get sympathy sales from reddit is infuriating
>>721095590I love the look of your game but I have to agree in that it doesn't look very fun to play (but it could). My two cents:>add big muzzleflashes for player and enemies>the sprite for when a bullet dissappear when hitting an enemy or wall is super weak, barely visible at time>add some movement to the player. My game improved a lot when I added the knight's cape, which seems like a small detail but the more visual feedback you give to the player, the better>speaking of feedback, add some blood or particles coming out of the enemies when they get hit>more feedback: animate the enemies bullets. In my game they went from red-yellow to kinda purple, making them very easy to spot.>way more subjective but I'm not a fan of how your player shoots: very fast and very weak. My take is that making Cirno here shoot slower but making each shot count more would make the game more fun. That said, I'm not into Touhou so maybe Cirno's thing is shooting fast? Dunno.
>>721095908Tell us what happened
>>721096091thank you that's extremely good feedback, I'll try to incorporate some.I'm still figuring out how to balance the shooting, the one you are seeing is the starter weapon that shoots really fast but is very weak and becomes slower the lower the charge it has, there are other weapons like shotguns and repeaters that run on ammo but I still have no idea how to balance them.Perhaps the starter weapon shouldn't shoot that fast, killing anything with it is supposed to be a chore
>>721095590forgot one thing: make the shadow of player and enemies more visible, right now it's like they are floating above the scenery
>>721096312I'm having trouble doing shadows in an efficient way (or even round to begin with), it's also hard to determine at what height bullets are (but I try to always keep them at the same height) and adding shadows to them completely lags the game, so that's one thing I left for later
HOW DO I GET UNITY TO RENDER GRASS IN A SINGLE DRAWCALL INSTANCING JUST BREAKS AT 1023 LITTLE BLADE AAAAAAAAHH
>>721096596works on my machine
>>721096286DOOM 16 had a weak ass pistol. DOOM Eternal didn't and instead let the player start the game with a shotgun. My take from that is that people that know way more about game design than me decided that having useless weapons in your roster is a waste.>balance the weaponsI'd focus on making them fun to use first, you can always tweak the numbers later.>>721096524I'd just add them to the player and npcs. Good luck with that, your 2D seems very low-res and I can see making a decent circle with those limitations a pain.
>>721096802The game is actually 3D with 2D sprites, but I limited bullets to a 2D plane so they will never move vertically unless they are shot from a higher platform, but the ortographic isometric camera messes up with perception a lot, I still have to figure out a good way to setup environment shadows

>>721096092Underpaid, overworked, had my art belittled and shit on even though even the negative reviews said it was the only thing good in the game. Worked crunch, they don't take any criticism well, any negative feedback is just "trolls, don't do anything in the trailer and instead add random shit nobody asks for, go on reddit and blame the long development time on the animator even though there are fucking years of unused assets the programmer does fuck all with. it's pretty ironic that "ideas guys" get so much hate in gamedev when the only game that has any progress in this thread is a blond guy fighting monsters with sword and shield (both carried on his back!), using items from a secondary directional input, and with his health measured in red diamonds (not hearts, diamonds!!) and a green magic meter.

>>721098269as I said here: >>721094045>There's no need to reinvent the wheel, just make something fun to playsure my game isn't original, but I never meant for it to be. I just wanted a game that feels like classic 3D Zelda (which nobody wants to make) mixed with some Dragon's Dogma (which nobody wants to make). As professor Fink from The Simpsons said, sometimes the best inventions are just mixing components of things that already exist.
I'm thinking about changing the format of v3 going forward. >Keep skits around 3-4 minutes>Rapid fire 15-20 seconds of game footage from each game back to back like how sage does it >Do like three or four skits with three or four game dumps>Two interviews around 5 minutes>Require everyone to make a booth and a demo (receiving time by not having to make a trailer so you can spend it on the other things) >Demos are available to be downloaded from the site after the main show is done >The full list of participating games is not released until the show is over. >Include awards for Best in show, most anticipated >Have streamers restream the show and playing the games and create a "press package" for the showWhat do you guys think?

Here's the Trollglodyte Falcata's 40 Below McHavoc-and-Malice attack in action. Frankly, this weapon went from being my least favorite to one of my most. Honestly, I am happy with how the weapons have turned out in my game, as they each have their own use cases:>Arming Swords are fast and allow you to use the Energy Buckler>Maces, while much slower, can allow you to stun enemies and, when used in conjunction with Arming Swords, can quickly mow down armored foes>Fire-Breathing Techniques can incinerate unarmored enemies, melt seemingly invincible ice enemies, and can light lamps, but is completely ineffective against armored enemies and creatures made of abiotic material>Longswords are seemingly slower, more powerful versions of the Arming Swords, but Fygoon's inexperience allows him to think outside the box and whirl it around like a mad top>Throwing Chakrams are like Fire-Breathing Techniques but use its own unique "ammo" and causes physical damage to enemies>The Daimon Cannon just massacres everything (it's the Jabberwock Eye Staff mixed with the Thunderbolt) and as such can only be earned by the greatest of warriorsAll in all, I like it.

>>721094045>There's no need to reinvent the wheel, just make something fun to play.Yeah but the problem is that I got to the point where I realized "this is just the game I'm apeing". I got to the point that my game was just a clone with a different coat of paint, instead of something unique that takes inspiration from it. It's fine for a gamejam or something, but not for something where I wanna express myself. So now I'm reworking some parts of it.
>>721102704Sounds like you are just retarded, try finishing a project first and then start waxing philosophy.
>>721103048I've made a dozen shitty games already for jams and whatnot.
>>721103226If you participated in even one game jam and you still haven't learned that no idea is ever truly original then you are 100% retarded and should let someone else make directorial decisions for your projects.
>>721103652That's not what I'm saying.I came to a realization that my game is literally 90% a copy. It's made up of 4 major systems, and 3 of them were just a copy of the game I was inspired by. I didn't feel that what I'm making is "my game", just "that game but with X", to the point. So now I'm changing it up so it's more unique, and of course it's not that easy.>what's wrong with just a copy. That'd be fine for a jam game or something, but I want to put this one on Steam.
>>721104012Even if your game is 100% a copy of another people will still play it if it has a different artstyle that the game it copies. Its literally the meme of "Holy shit, two cakes!"
>>721101947that is the hardest part when starting any project: getting all the systems down so you can make the game. most often devs (even AAA) just hardcode everything. the only thing you can do is face the anxiety of it and power through, you will get there sooner or later
>>721104012By itself it's not inherently bad to be a copy, but you need to give people a reason to play your game over the original. In AAA that reason might be better graphics, but you won't get it. For trendchasers or nostalgia bait it's that people already played the original and want more of it. It can work, but you really need to have the right timing. What can you offer? What are you passionate about? What do you DISlike about the original and how would you fix it? E33 is a JRPG full of French art, can you express your local culture through a game? Maybe some non-gaming passion you can use, some specific art style or weird tech, etc.Find that hook and think how you can integrate it into the existing game, that will create something original after some iteration.
>>721094045this looks cool, how long did it take you to make it?
Alright so simmering on it just a little bit here's what I'm thinking of:>Anyone can participate regardless of playability. They must submit 15 to 30 seconds of your best gameplay footage to be in the show. The trailers can be marked as "In Production, Coming Soon (with a release date), Demo Out, or Out Now".>Trailers will be ran in-between skits as per usual. >Foregoing interviews, we will be replacing them with "extended spotlights" where we handpick two or three games to specifically highlight with a longer section about a minute to 3 minutes long overviewing their game. >Afterwards, those who have submitted demos "Demo out" they will be available on our site.>(1) Game will be awarded an icon for best in show for them to display on their socials/steam page, etc.Thoughts?
I've been doing some event queue stress testing, launching 20,000+ A* pathfinding spells from several game clients, or 20,000+ active monster spawns with pathfinding. Pretty much wrapped up there, now I am working on despawn (or pausing) monster tick if no players are in any nearby regions. Since I have remote workers in place, I wondered if it would be worth it to continue to simulate those monsters on workers, outside of the actual tick. But that is future me's problem to contend with and I don't know him.
Reasons why I hate furfags:>1. They made the idea of talking animals weird>2. They are analogous to diddlers because they take something that should be innocent and corrupt them>3. They are very volatile, especially when you post pictures of monitor lizards ripping rabbits to shredsAnd that is why I refuse to cater to those vermin.
>>721104496Probably. I think it'd be fun if left as is, but again, I wanna do a bit of my own thing here.Plus there's the fact that some elements would need changing one way or another to accommodate my changes. Some things worked okay in the original, but not so much once I've changed the genre they belonged in, and such. For the two months I've been working on it so far, they've just been sitting in the back of my mind, hoping they'd iron themselves out or something. Going back to the drawing board very quickly presented solutions to them. Simply put, breaking out of that original design gave me new perspective, and I like it a lot. It's just a bit difficult to decide how to put it together now. There's no clear blueprint to follow anymore, I have to prototype.>>721104860Yeah I can confidently say I have that. It's a matter of making everything feel tight and fun instead of poorly thought-out and needlessly convoluted.
>>721098636Why are you talking about dragons dogma or or zelda when its clearly Binding of Isaac or enter the gungeon
Does anyone know of any decent tutorials on making a first person dungeon crawler like Wizardry or Etrian Odyssey? I've been making small games for a while that are basically just vertical slices of other games in preparation for eventually making my own game, which I want to be a first person dungeon crawler. I've been doing it for a while but after I finish the exercise I'm doing now I just want to try making a prototype dungeon crawler before moving on to the real thing, so if a good tutorial to work off exists it would be really handy.
>>721094045>>721098636The wheel NEEDS to be subverted or you will not make it. Case in point, The Last Jedi gets praised while the rehash plot after it gets bashed on.
>>721105718As someone who made one few years ago, I'm not aware of one say, but there's a few for the dungeon crawling part and the RPG part separatedly. The crawlan part isn't too hard. First of all decide if you want the movement locked to a grid or not. RPG part is a lot harder. More rigid rules means more work. It's probably better to focus on one first, then work on the other once you're happy with it, or need a break from it.Good luck trying to revive this cursed genre.
>>721107047I already made a vertical slice of a JRPG, though obviously it didn't have all the complexities that would make it really difficult to put together, but it's good to know the dungeoncrawling isn't that hard to put together. I've already done grid-based movement from a top-down perspective but I really want to figure out how to have it be first person and have a map to go with it before I make my own game because those are pretty fundamental parts of the experience.
>>721107595One thing I didn't do and I'd recommend looking into would be a robust map editor. What I did was place all the walls manually, and then just took a screenshot of the finished map that'd be revealed as you walked around. It was pretty tedious. Now with more experience I'd make a map editor where you just fill out a grid, then it gets made up of premade pieces, and the viewable map gets generated from that data as well. It might make adding gimmicks/puzzles more difficult as you should implement them in the editor too, but you could also keep it simple, generate just a basic map in there, and then spice it up with props. As for the JRPG stuff, usually shit like non-static things causes me to have to think it through. Things like buffs or passive effects.
>>721107595You could try mode-7 from your existing top down grid

FINAL PLAN for 2026 and beyond for /v/3:>Trailers are limited to a minimum of a minute and a maximum of 1 minute 30 seconds and 28 spots.>Those who cant make a full trailer can then opt into 1 of 6 rapid fire montages of games (30 spots total) where the required length of clips is 10-15 seconds and are sandwiched between bumpers>>The trailers can be marked as "In Production, Coming Soon (with a release date), Demo Out, or Out Now">Participants can nominate their game for an extended spotlight which will be chosen on the organizer's discretion>Two interviews of approx 5 minutes in length will be put inbetween.>Skits will last around 3-4 minutes in-between trailers. Maybe more shorter skits? IDK. Hosts will also VA the extended spotlight.>Afterwards, those who have submitted demos "Demo out" they will be available on our site.>(1) Game will be awarded an icon for best in show for them to display on their socials/steam page, etc. Thanks for all your input fellas.

>>721099195The difference between the "idea guy" and "actual effort" is simply in intellect. Also of genuine dumb people are the self proclaimed "idea guys" and I know it personally. Idea guy doesn't have a capacity to understand the situation he is in and the effort it takes to bring his "ideas" to life, partly from the fact he never tried doing anything himself. Everyone is an idea guy, everyone can talk out of their ass, but when you actually start implementing and working on the stuff you thought about you realize how, if not impossible it is, unreasonable, unrealistic or simply too much of an effort to actualize. Majority of the games started as grand ideas, but even studios with thousands of dollars of budgets had to dumb down the scopes and cut more than half of what they initially "thought" off. Also, there is no comprehension of risks involved either with the idea guy, since he doesn't understand that his ideas might actually be uninteresting dog shit that not only no one asked for but it was literally already been done and failed miserably, but his fantasy prevents him from at the very least considering so. There is no more pathetic man than idea man, since again, everyone have ideas, the difference is simply in actualizing them.

Anyone got reading material on environment building? I'm talking keeping sane draw call counts, when to group meshes vs. keep them separate, workflows for modular building so you're not reinventing to wheel so often when you can tweak an existing prefab to fit a new case, etc. Been dicking around with making some basic Create-a-Park assets to prototype a skateboarding game with at some point, but this approach leaves very little with regards to building an organic terrain in this LEGO manner, so I'm going to eventually need a means of say, taking humps and quarter-pipe prefabs and modeling them directly into the terrain at some point so they look smooth, rather than look placed on top. Hell, I don't even know if you should even chop up a terrain when you do make one, just to make the means of transitioning to LoD models variable distance rather than fixed.

You know, guys, I'm a nodev who just started to learn everything, and my opinion doesn't matter, but the more I read these threads, the more I notice tge pattern: most of you progressposters post progress about unimportant stuff. Like "making a sword sheathing". Or something like "added fart clouds animation". Like, I get it, it's good for immersion and all, but I feel like most of you don't actually progressing and you just forever stuck in the polishing the turd phase. Aren't you able to do all that after finishing the main gameplay loop?
>>721147679Hi there nodev. Little updates that you think are unimportant are to them. When you update text to use different letters sure, but if it means progress then it is progress. That means one less tedious thing that was forgotten.
>>721147679Main gameplay loop takes hundreds of hours and focusing purely on that will result in burning out.Have some fun with your game. When you get a girlfriend you don't just have babymaking sex 24/7 for the sole purpose of procreation with her do you?
>>721147679Solo devving is a very complex process. There are a million things to do, most of it not very interesting or practically invisible, and can't really be shown. We work on the things that make us happy, and show off the things we think end up looking cool. But make no mistake, every real progress post on "unimportant" things comes inbetween loads of actual work, which goes unappreciated because it can't easily be shown off or explained.Today I woke up, did some design and theory on the story and gameplay, improved some code, fixed a bug. But I'm going to show you this mushroom-covered tree I made.

I only picked out the parts of the model which needed some texture, the rest is uniform color. That way you get a small, manageable part to easily deal with. Helps wrap your head around it.
>>721148923And what makes you think i haven't? You only see what has been posted dummy.
>>721148939Not a fagoon, just a nodev who just started learning Godot. Fygoon is an opposite of what I'm talking about, feature creeping till the end of times.>>721149004Can you guys stop being overly defensive like every bit of critique is a personal attack?
>>721148987Here's the actual bunny.
>>721148923Because in indie you often don't have a very rigid plan. Plus YAGNI applies to code, applying it to broader game design is silly. Code is meant to be efficient, games are meant to be fun and quirky. Yeah it doesn't make much sense to add dependency injection to sword sheathing as it's just bloat, but if you change your game from swords to axes down the line, then it's not suddenly an inconvenience that you've placed on yourself.
>>721149087>guys stop getting defensive at your own way to make a game while my way is superior You sound just like lizblizz.
>>721147679Asset creation is the most important part of gamedev. You can implement as many features into a prototype as you want, but it will feel 100x better to play when you put in the right art and sounds.
implemented ui event changes with ammo and healthas well as dynamic weapon icon change and reload pop upclosing in on having core ui template functionality in place
>>721149146>Plus YAGNI applies to code"YAGNI is a principle behind the XP practice of "do the simplest thing that could possibly work"", quote Wikipedia. It doesn't apply to code only, it applies to everything. What I see for most of you is a severe feature creep. Most of you don't even have a proof-of-concept MVP (minimal valuable product).>Code is meant to be efficient, games are meant to be fun and quirkyImplying that the code for games doesn't need to be efficient? That's clearly wrong.
I was thinking of submitting my game to the next v/3 whenever that happens but I realized they won't approve of my game...
>>721147679consult the graph
>>721147679>people only show off things that are actually tangibleStop the fucking presses
>>721149472>Asset creation is the most important part of gamedevNo it is not. Pong has white squares for assets.>>721149638I know a lot about project management (managed a team of junior web programmers in recent past) and programming. Gamedev is also, literally, programming, for most part.
probably been asked 100 times, want to casually make limited games, would it be better to invest in UE5 or godot with only strong knowledge in art? example a 3d platformer
>>721147569Lick my fucking balls bitch.
>>721148987Regular-ass UV mapping I have no issue with. It's more the planning out trim sheets for maximizing reusability so I don't need multiple materials in a scene when I can reuse the one for a variety of assets that need generic detail like grass, wood, stone steps, etc.
>>721149792When pong was developed, those white squares were revolutionary. Absolutely the most important part of pong is the white squares. Making them move and do something was added as an afterthought. They weren't developing a video game, they were developing visual rendering.
>>721149941>When pong was developed, those white squares were revolutionary. Absolutely the most important part of pong is the white squares. >>721149565It's really not that complicated. What you're saying is technically true, but beelining to the goal while ignoring every guilty pleasure on the way is just not what humans do (unless you have giga-autism).Game development is more fluid than general software. As you claim >>721149792 here, you obviously know how to work in corporate setting where money is the #1 thing and you learn to minimize waste to account for changes in design. In indie dev, you don't have money as motivator to do your job, so you need to motivate yourself in other ways. Nobody gives you shit for fucking around either.Yes you can just make the bare fucking minimum, but you're not a failure for adding a ranged enemy on top of melee one "too early", or making the UI too pretty even if it changes. This isn't a megacorp where time is money.tl;dr get that stick out of your ass, sucking out the fun out of gamedev is not what majority of people here want to do even if it gets the final product out slightly faster >implying majority of games will finish either way>Implying that the code for games doesn't need to be efficientNot what I said.
Want to make a tactical historical RPG like expeditions, aiming for Rome TW level fidelity. Gathered a whole bunch of references and shit, hopefully it fun me and my partners are really passionate so hopefully it pans out.
>>721149898Probably GODOT, UE has a pretty steap learning curve and a whole bunch of useless features and bloat especially if you only plan on making platformers. Unity would also be a better option than UE.
>>721149508Keep up the good work anon. Seeing the ui update with the rest of the programming is very enjoyable.
>>721145512I'm legit shocked he doesn't have a farms thread already
>>721150507much appreciated kind anoncant wait to get back into blenderonce the template is set up its going to get filled out with proper enemies bosses and the whole shebang
>>721150218>beelining to the goal while ignoring every guilty pleasure on the way is just not what humans do (unless you have giga-autism).You can add all that fluff in future refactoring. That's what it is. "Fluff". Nobody cares if your character is blowing bubbles in his sleep while doing idle animation.>Game development is more fluid than general software. No it is not. General software (like, a website) also has UI designers, artists, and animation. Gamedev is a project. Not only programming project, of course, but it is an exercise in project management. Read "Masters of Doom": most of stagnating devs here are Romero's archetype. >>"Romero is on the opposite end of the spectrum; Ion Storm is intended to be a very fun place to work, where "[game] design is law," and where technology must be created to realize the designer's vision, instead of the other way around. However, his lack of management and organizational focus leads to financially disastrous results.">In indie dev, you don't have money as motivator to do your jobLmao yeah, sure, that is why /agdg/ is full of comparisons of Banquet for Fools vs frienslop about digging a hole review count. Don't delude yourself, you all dream about making it.That's unrelated, but I also tried learning drawing in the past, and I always noticed how "polishing the turd" phase is a constant among novice artists.
>>721150704You're welcome anon! I spend two weeks working on ui elements for quickslots and im back in blender and happily so. Learning blenders atrocious menu system is the real test.
>>721151471Blender's menu is generally fine, until you start diving into drivers, and the graph editor.
>>721151135>Nobody cares if your character is blowing bubbles in his sleep while doing idle animation.People who see the game for the first time will care. More importantly, I care.>Gamedev has "multiple people"You should stop looking at solo indie dev and asking "why the hell do they not do the same thing as million dollar companies with a hundred employees? are they stupid?">John RomeroGuy who made games in different times. Maybe instead read localthunk's blog for a modern day equivalent. He started making the game feel good early on, and then kept adding new features up until the release. Did he fail?>Don't delude yourself, you all dream about making it.Isn't it more delusional to ASSUME it's gonna make you rich? Yeah the dream of success is at least part of why you bother, but statistically you will lose money on indie dev. If you want to make big bucks as a game dev, you join a company as a cog in the machine, not do this.
>>721151568Anon I have seen guys like this come in here, posts these walls of text already expecting pushback and question stupid shit.
>>721151705Don't say that, I know it already but when someone else points it out I feel stupid for bothering.
>>721151568>You should stop looking at solo indie dev and asking "why the hell do they not do the same thing as million dollar companies with a hundred employees? are they stupid?"I look at the guys like Miziziziz, who's able to do a survival horror videogame in 3 days, and actually finished several projects already, some of which turned profit. You should learn a thing or two from his workflow. The thing is, you trying to convince me that gamedev is actually quirky and fun way to waste your time and never finish a game and it's somehow a good thing when a dream game project haunts your mind for decades. Sounds more like you want to traumatize yourself with unfinished business.
>>721152181It's the difference between a driven individual, and a game design bible to adhere to, vs. others just chipping away at something like a hobby.
>>721070809Damn I'm glad I opened this thread so I could see this game.
>>721147679You just don't see the ones that do the main loop because it takes so much time and isn't very showable. I've been working on that and the only thing I've posted here is a bit of artwork when I feel like taking it easy for a bit.You can easily show an animation or new model to random strangers, but how many people would care about logs stepping through my combat system? Who wants to see a diagram of my data structures(that doesn't exist and woudl take me extra effort to make)? I would guess that most people here are not experienced solo game developers with specialized pipelines and tools, they're hobbyists still learning how to do everything and often building their tools as they go. And they may only get to working on anything after job and household duties. Of course progress is slow.
>>721152181Yeah Miz is successful, but at the same time he also has a LOT of code backlog to quickly piece together his projects. It's no coincidence all of his games look exactly the same. And to build that code collection, you either jump from one prototype to another, or you fuck around with ideas. But look, like I said earlier I think you are right to some degree. I do think some people here would benefit from locking in and making their game more complete instead of fucking around too much.At the same time I think most people here are progressing nicely at their own pace, and most people here are not autistic enough for the hyper-efficiency development style you're suggesting. It's a balancing act, and going full retard on either side is not a recipe for success.

>>721152927At the very least they would distract him just for talking about him. Someone like fygoon will go running into a kiwifarms thread about himself and start antagonizing everyone there which will start a feeding frenzy. He isn't able to stop himself, he feels he needs to "win" and dominate everyone by refusing to leave even if he is banned, which is exactly what he is doing here for almost 2 years now. He thinks he has the right to abuse websites and break their TOS as he admits here >>721142039 and as you noticed he will plague these threads in 24 hour cycles when given the opportunity. It's all about dominance with him. He is "dominating" us by spamming these threads and constantly dodging bans. >>721101629>admits he's banned from /v/3Correct, you are not allowed as in banned. You're not allowed, as in banned, which you already admitted above. And don't forget, if you didn't dodge your bans on this website nobody would even know your game exists. >>721155429Exactly it doesn't make sense when you consider he's supposed to be making a game, none of it is about the game for him. If he cared about his game he wouldn't use it as a tool to antagonize 4chan. He doesn't plan to ever finish or release the game because he knows it's bad and he already burned it's reputation to the ground. His game is just a prop for him now to antagonize the internet and also tell himself and other people that he's doing something with his time. He's obsessed with pretending to be a functional productive person.
