You know, if it wasn't for the weird story and the questionable gameplay, this would've been the best Final Fantasy game, easily.
>>
the story and gameplay is what makes it the best FF game zoomie
>>
>>721056787
>if it wasn’t for the [two most important things in a jrpg] being dogshit, the game would be good!
No shit, zoomer.
>>
How hard would a vr model of balance garden be to make? Just to walk around and view? They make home walkthroughs.
>>
>>721056787
or perhaps it's the best FF precisely BECAUSE of its weirder elements...who's to say?
either say something interesting and elaborate on your opinion or just don't post the thread
>>
Which is your favorite locale? Fisherman's horizon is neat.

What's up with the resurgence of FF8 shitposting? Did some youtuber shit on it recently?
>>
>>721059228
It's a great game and very few places to discuss it. I can imagine what more niche rpgs are like, vagrant story and valkyrie profile. I only nowbofb4 people that have played and enjoyed it and are conversation has run dry. In is invigorating to meet new people and ideas.
>>
It's impossible to do the side quest without a guide, right?
>>
>>721056787
Worst classic FF
But best soundtrack in the series. Uematsu cooked.
>>
>>721058270
Fisherman’s Horizon is top tier, comfy as hell with that sunset backdrop and the mellow music that feels like a hug. But personally, I’ve always been partial to Esthar. That city felt like you stepped into another game entirely-cold, sterile, and overwhelming in the best sci-fi way possible. It’s what Midgar would've looked like if Shinra stopped being assholes.
>>
>>721056787
Laguna was totally unnecessary
>>
>>721056787
Dude, you can keep posting a FFVIII thread everyday but you still won't fool anyone.
>>
>>721059923
They keep making one useless remake after another when it's Vagrant Story that truly needs it

I liked it but wasn't able to enjoy the combat because didn't level my stats properly
(I played it when it came out)

Squall is still the coolest MC.

Which side quests?
Running into the good monsters seems to mostly be dumb luck.
Chocobo Forests are mostly a matter of finding your way around the world map.
The super boss is easy enough to stumble into without directions.
There's only like two GFs that an extra bit of knowledge to obtain. Normal people aren't going to stop and kill a few dozen Tonberries for no reason, and I never did bother getting Doomtrain.
>>
>>721064441
Wait, I might be confused. Were the good monsters FF8 or FF9?
>>
>>721057026
I was the first user on Gamefaqs to prove you could make Lionheart on disc 1. I was there at the beginning. There is a reason half of us played the game by rushing to unlock no encounter and card battling and refining our way through it. Abysmal progression system.
>>
>>721064481
Both
>>
>>721058270
Windmill is super cosy though.
But as FF in general, I have to go with Treno as the most comfy city of all time.
Dark, fitting piano soundtrack, old fashioned castle town with contrast of poverty and high born nobels. 10/10 would visit.
>>
>>721064481
Ozma is pretty neat as a boss at least.
I like the premise that memories shape everything, and Ozma is so old and forgotten that its form is starting to deteriorate.
>>
>>721059228
For me, FF8 will always have a special place in my heart. The game is so fucking stupid that it turns into some kind of psychedelic trip.
>>
>>721059228
I wouldn't have played the game if i didnt watch a YouTube guy talk about what made ff8 "controversial" relative to the other games. Cause after playing ff10 (pure kino) i was wondering where to go next, so i played ff9 and absolutely hated it. And so i thought to myself since ff9 is so heavily circlejerked, what if i dislike what people like about it, and so what if ff8 will be a game where i like what people dislike about it?
Thus i got to experience a great game
>>
>>721058270
for some reason, timber
but FH has the best song
>>
>>721056787
No, it would've still had awful characters, pacing, atmosphere and visual style.
>>
>>721056787
I still love it and a remake would make me extremely happy
>>
>>721066362
What events did you pick?I can't remember since I played a couple of times.
>>
>>721064441
I think they mentioned the number of tonberroes and keep it a mystery what the prize is or only allude to the tonberry king. Doom train gets mentioned in a magazine so dont know if you searched around the environment to find it.
>>
>>721061408
Esthar legit felt like it got warped in from an entirely different franchise. That sensory overload when you first hit the city? Peak late-90s JRPG aesthetic-neon veins, sterile tech, and that weirdly haunting BGM. The perfect contrast to the earthy, warm vibes of Fisherman's Horizon. FFVIII world design might be all over the place, but damn if it doesn’t stick in your memory like a fever dream.
>>
>>721068392
What you mean events? Maybe it’s too long since I played it as well xD
>>
>>721056787
is this the most discussed game in v ? Since I've been using the page for years, there are always threads about this FF. Is this the best FF of all?
>>
>>721069903
Yeah, /v/ just doesn't want to admit it. Meanwhile 9 threads are usually a ghost town.
>>
>>721056787
Maybe. The main focus should've been on Odine Ellone & Ultimecia with an emphasis on random women becoming possessed with witch-like powers. Basically, SeeD is there to suppress the witch outbreaks.
>>
>>721067624
I'm conflicted on a remake since while adding VA and better graphics would be alright, there's no way the gameplay would just be left the same. Yet the ability to just have the amount of customization and ways to totally break the game is what makes up part of the charm and just having the combat system be "fixed" into yet another normalized JRPG wouldn't feel right
>>
I might sound like a boomer whatever, but all PS1 era FFs are good. FFX is the last good game.
I don’t know why the fuck 8 gets all the threads, but probably because it’s unique and actually fun to fuck around with GFs and junction
>>
>>721056787
it was the forced 3d graphics that looked like absolute garbage
>>
>>721069903
Nope, it's just a few loud anons (or just one) trying to convince the rest of us and failing miserably every time.
>>
>>721069903
VII gets talked about more. In their heyday X and XIII did too. But VIII has solidified its claim for second place over the decades.
>>
>>721070362
>years later and FF8's fans still haven't overcome their inferiority complex
lmao
>>
>>721060210
i would say Tactics or XI is best soundtrack in the series
>>
I'm not here to defend VIII, I think that of I - XII it's the worst FF game. However, the fact that it's possible to avoid drawing completely negates the problem. Not only is there now no problem, but they took the time and effort to offer an alternate approach to gaining magic which puts them in a positive. They actually gave the game a lot of depth, especially combined with some of the world building. It's just a shame the story and pacing is atrocious after disk 1.
>>
>>721071157
8 suffers from the same thing as 2, a leveling system completely detached from the norm that polarizes people. Except in 8's case it's fun to fuck around and break the system where as 2 was just tedious. It's also the middle child of the PS games so it ends up getting sidelined for the first (7) or the return to basics younger sibling (9).

7 had the benefits of a longer time to cook, where as 8 and 9 where more rushed to keep yearly releases. There was a lot of experimenting from Square as a result. In 8 it was in the game while in 9 it was more multimedia focused such as PlayOnline gutting half the strategy guide which is easier to ignore.

Add that up and it's more interesting to talk about 8 and also easier to dunk on it so you get more attention.
>>
>>721056787
>if x game had a different story, gameplay, characters, designs, production values, marketing campaign, selling numbers, fandom and industry recognition, THEN it would be great
Ok...
>>
the story and junction system are great though.
>>
>>721063017
at least pretend you played the game. if you had posted the G.F. button I would have at least believed you.
>>
>>721069903
because it's controversial. for every other FF game we already know if they are good or bad. with ff8 there is actual discussion to be had. I do think you're enjoyment of FF8 depends mostly on how quick you can figure out the mechanics on your own.
>>
If people actually leveled up in FFVIII they would realise that most enemies have low stat caps. The enemies that don't are so rare that you don't even encounter them without going of your way. But it was a huge balancing mistake to give story bosses level caps, they're too weak until disc 4. Same with magic damage being so ass, it doesn't only make magic too lame to use it makes all bosses that rely on magic attacks even weaker.
>>
>>721069875
Ff9 has active time events that it would sometimes make you choose to see what other characters were doing. You could only choose one and the other would remain a mystery till you played again.
>>
>>721069903
I have tactics as well. 8 seems to have had more promotion on tv when it came out. It was also more cinematic.
>>
Personally I think Final Fantasy VIII is better than its predecessor VII, its story seems better to me and its gameplay seems more interesting, although it is very easy to break
>>
>>721075823
I don't remember ever having to choose betwen two ATE and missing the other.
>>
>>721078412
I think the only time you have mutually exclusive options and they affect the game in some way is during the card tournament on disc 3.
>>
>>721074749
It's a >tfw no gf
meme
>>
>>721075063
It doesn't matter how quick you can figure out the mechanics, it's just that they are either "hit or miss", even after you figured them out.
>>
>>721075823
Active time events were great to flesh out not only your party members but also npcs
>>
>>721074749
Are you baiting me? Do you know what your command list looks like when you don't have a Guardian Force equipped to a character?
>>
>>721079626
>>721078730
yeah sorry. missed the context. thought you were implying ff8 is one of those jrpgs where you just spam attack to win.
>>
>>721059228
You have to assume SE is preparing an FF8 remake and it hired a firm to do some pre-marketing.
>>
>>721080503
Square shat out a low effort remaster that couldn't even get the main character's design right, and they didn't refresh the brand for 20 years like they did for VII. Square isn't doing shit with VIII.
>>
>>721080503
if you go to a square enix shop in japan, FF8 has the least amount of merch displayed, so I doubt it.
>>
Deep sea research facility and ultimecias castle was cool dungeons. The music in the game is godlike, arguably the best soundtrack of all the FFs.
I’d kill for a decent remake, but it’ll never happen. It’s not popular enough.
>>
>>721078056
Is there any FF that isn’t easy to break?

FFVII had its infamous Knights of the Round spam, afterall.
>>
>>721086796
FFIX doesn’t have I-WIN buttons like that.
Despite the fact that summons destroy entire towns in the FMVs, they do fuck all in the game, and the limit breaks really do suck ass.

Killing those sheep like creatures on that one island is still hard despite being max level with good gear.
>>
one day people will realize that ff9 didn't sell bad because of 8, and ff8 didn't sell well because of 7...
>>
>>721056787
I liked how your party followed you around on screen
>>
>>721058270
The whole world map is comfy to me.
