I think he's way harder than Malenia.Overall it's absolutely worth it if you enjoyed base ER.

It's decent.The story is just unfortunately incomplete, or worse intentionally.Dark Souls and Demon's Souls had their own mechanical experimentation/innovation, but the gameplay of Souls is really not deep or interesting.It was always design forward.Level design, world design.They were coherently realized places to be.When you failed, you failed because you weren't forgiven things games didn't punish you for, and that felt realer.Boletaria while having some pretty fantastical architecture does feel like a real ugly eastern european shithole.Lordran is deeply interconnected spatially in a way they've never really reproduced.That all ties into Miyazaki's "atmospheric lore and storytelling".That ultimately there was a real world there, that you didn't full comprehend or understand.But the illusion of that world breaks down when they're afraid to commit to it.2,3,Eldoring don't convincingly meet that standard.They invoke the mystery and illusion for its own sake.Worse is the investment of the player in unraveling that mystery.There are narrative and thematic and mechanical rewards to decoding and unraveling the world and lore of Dark Souls 1 and Bloodborne.The player feels rewarded.When they aren't, they feel betrayed.Elden Ring betrays the player that wants to understand the story and world.There is no coherent resolution to the story or lore.It is not possible to figure out what's truly going on.

I also thought it was really good and maybe even better than the base game, the level design and art direction was consistently amazing. For me the main problem with the base game was how empty the game becomes.I decided to play it to completion this past 2 months. I was very excited to see Volcano Manor because it had that snake girl everyone talks about. When I got there, it only had 5 npcs that I was able to interact with, and had I missed Patches he wouldn't be there. After besting Rykard they all disappear and the place becomes empty and pointless. That happens with many other locations in this game.

Scadutree avatar is a good example since killing him is trivial with a long reach/fire weapon while it gets infuriating with a short reach one. I liked it too. The bosses were a bit too cinematic and the joy of the DLC really relied too much on tree fragments. I got pissed trying to kill Bayle at blessing level 4 for hours.
