story falls apart after act 1
stupid qte/simon says combat system

thats about it which doesnt sound much but in actuality fucks the entire game
>>
Games way too easy. They didn't respect their players enough to make more difficult fights. Clea and Simon should be entry level super bosses.
>>
>>721093814
QTE simulator masquerading as "parries."
>>
>>721093814
Combat isn't very engaging and the non-story roaming encounters feel like a waste of time.

Characters have disgusting mole ridden skin like every other westernslop, it's unplayable dogshit, not as bad as Cyberpunk though
>>
>>721093814
Lune, Sciel, and Monoco get sidelined very hard in terms of the story in act 3. Also the occasional UE5 jank everyone blows out of proportion.
>>
It makes me want to do a challenge run because of how confusing the upgrade systems are at first. I've played the entire game without doing any upgrades, weapon changes, or skill changes so far and I'm at the brush-people village.
>>
Act 3 needs an item or ability to mark locations you've been because it's not fun trying to keep track of all the various areas and your completion of them and by that point in the game you're aware of what the situation really is.
>>
I'll never get to impregnate Lune
>>
>>721093814
act 3 scaling gets wonky. you either smash through fights or get smashed, and if you do the side content then the final dungeon is too easy.

>>721095363
what
>>
>>721093814
>First strikes occasionally don't register when either you or an enemy are on sloped/inclined surfaces
>Failing or succeeding action commands don't affect characters' animations so the damage increase brought about by the latter is completely arbitrary
>The unconventional timing of lots of attacks is self-defeating because you quickly get used to it regardless which together with its lack of any toggles for faster/shortened animations (unlike at least one of its major influences from 26 years prior) makes even initially difficult encounters feel like going through the motions past a certain point
>Overuse of slow-mo to throw off your timing with regard to the above when the creature designs show that the devs are too creative not to have thought of some more varied ways to achieve this (e.g. enemies characterised as great fighters like the Gestral boxers or Dualliste could've used feints instead)
>Defence is functionally identical for every character which feels like wasted potential in contrast to how great their unique offensive mechanics are (apart from Gustave's comparatively boring arm charge)
>Art direction's similarly let down by the camera almost never deviating from the over-the-shoulder view, so moments like finally reaching the Monolith aren't treated with any more significance than any other nondescript area (arguably less than the handful of featureless rooms where you collect music records given that they each have unique viewpoints)
>Builds/strategies almost invariably take a backseat to parrying because it's the simultaneously most reliable source of damage/protection/AP for the overwhelming majority of them
Initially thought it was great after I'd just beaten it but have eventually come to feel that it's just alright (even if it's still clear for many reasons why it'd be among someone's favorites) and that a non-insignificant degree of the praise it's gotten is inversely proportional to how many other JRPGs its fans have played
>>
>>721095704
This, and Act 3 varies wildly between you just stomping enemies or getting stomped.

Besides that though, pretty much a perfect game.

>>721096257
I don't like JRPGs because they always expect you to grind way too much, and gather components for crafting items and gear, etc lots of stuff like that, just pointless timesinks that aren't fun. There was no grinding in E33 so that alone puts it ahead of the majority of JRPGs.
>>

>>
>>721093814
Act3 wasn't balanced. they can easily fix the damage problem with 999999 cap then gate full damage behind a super boss. the real problem is verso/sciel can easily skip turn
>>
Location names goes away if you zoom out the map a little, it's odd. Wonky to control on keyboard. Also applies to combat, some keypresses doesn't register.

Going through the pictos (I think they were called) is time consuming, on PC they could have added a search by name at least.
>>
>>721097778
Could have made the limit a percentage of the enemy's total health (and you can improve that percentage), would make early enemies last to the endgame.

For me Verso was the strongest btw.
>>
>>721098130
Maelle and Verso were both my heavy hitters, usually with Sciel as support. But I hear some people build Lune into a monster that can solo most things
>>
>>721093814
>Shallow gameplay
all you can do is basic turnbased combat, it doesnt involve strategy or tactics, a lot of invisible walls and cant jump where you want
>Shallow Level design
Most of the levels are one or two rooms visual spectacle, then you have the main areas which have some shorcuts but pale in comparison to actual good level design
>Story issues
The story pacing is fucked, after the reveal that the whole thing is fake all the stakes are suddenly gone, it relies on mystery to carry it and once that mystery is revealed everything goes to shit
>Characters
The cast is underdeveloped and halfbaked, the companions side quests were dogshit shallow trash and they are treated horribly and given zero agency over anything
>Unbalanced encounter design
After you finish act 2 the game turns into a total mess, any "wrong" exploration fucks the whole balance of the game, even if you do it right, with the existence of basic pictos the game gets solved completely
>Too much parryslop spam
Especially in act 3, the game turns to full blown parryslop where enemies have long chain attacks and all you have to do is spam the same button to avoid damage AND retaliate for free, making it the best tool in the whole game and rendering strategy useless.
Also it makes replaying a fight more tedius than ever or if you want to flee, you have to wait for the chain attacks to be finished
>Graphically incompetent
While the game looks pretty the texture popin and graphic rendering is actual dogshit and destroys any sense of immersion you may have with the world.
>>
>>721097765
That would have been better than the retarded plot they came up with. Can you even defend that pathetic story without mentioning JRPGs?
>>
Level design of basically all the side content but especially in act 3 felt really lackluster. All the really cool visually distinct zones were act 1 besides Sirene
>>
>>721093814
Combat is not engaging enough to deserve focus but not simple enough like a jrpg that you can just veg on the couch and play
Its sluggish with how menus are navigated and directionless despite being FFX levels of hallway design
Narratively tries to make you care at the start but only succeeds in making you question why you didnt go on the last expedition to stop it before the girl you liked died instead of waiting for her to die and then going
>>
>>721094059
Clea and simon are one of the easiest bosses in the game, just one shot them.
The only challenging endgame bosses are the paintress and Renoir 2
>>
>>721098268
Yeah. I liked the story and thought it was cool. The twist added a lot more depth to the events and the characters, and overall feeling of the game and the weight of the struggle. Like everything else in the game, it felt fresh which is rare to find in games these days.

>>
>>721098339
You realize that half the cast doesn't have a presence at all after act 2, right? You could literally remove Sciel, Lune and Monocco entirely and the story wouldn't change at all. That's how badly these characters are written.
Oh, and killing off the protagonist for no reason at all just for "shock value" was such a smart story decision as well! Almost like the whole script was written by a clueless redditor.
>>
>>721093814
never gonna try this game becasue the first thing i saw about it was a french streamer insulting french-canadian about not being french. not a joke, i barely know anything about this game but im sure the dev paid him to shill it, so fuck them too, i dont think streamers should insult potential audience, as if i am going to give them a penny or even a second thought after this post, idk who was the streamer, i just wanted to see the game and got insulted for free instead, fuck them
>>
>>721098263
Yeah I saw a video of Lune doing 100 million in damage each hit against Simon with 100 times health.
>>
>>721098519
After Act 2, the game is almost over so that's not a huge thing, but I get your point there. I don't think they were badly written at all though, honestly I think the dialogue in this game, both the writing and how it's expressed is some of the best ever put into a game, it feels real and believable, like they're not just characters but actually people which is ironic

But I disagree that they just killed Gustave for shock value, it was an integral part of Maelle's character and a main point of division between her and Verso. It served a major narrative purpose, it wasn't just a hollow spectacle.
>>
For an RPG, it could have used a more fleshed out world (towns), and a couple of optional hidden party members.
They probably should have had some mandatory stuff to do in between getting the air ship and ending the game. I don't really feel inclined to explore if I feel like the narrative is pushing me along to the conclusion.

>>721099031
They have a pretty strong presence until the end of Act 2, and after that it's kinda spotty until the very end where they really get shown and expressed much again.
>>
>>721093814
It should have one more playable character.
x niggas in a row needs to have 2x or more characters. This way there could be cool sections like in FF6 or FF8 where you play as two parties in different places.
>>
>>721093814
>Do you want to spend some time with X?
The game should just have spread characters out a bit and played the dialogue/cutscene when you walk up to them.
>>
>>721097778
A cap is a bandaid fix, they were just overly lazy with pictos when stacking so many % damage modifiers makes you deal some Diablo 3 tier damage.

canadian was term used to describe us french in canada, when canada became independant, the english stole our name/identity, they were refering themself as britanic before that, the canadian term was reserved for french people, and english people thought they were better than us so they didnt' want to be called by the same name. and also it doesnt matter where i am born, if a mouse is born in a stable, it doesnt make it a horse, if you look into my family, you will find out that the first of my line were french soldier that came with Le régiment de Carignan-Salières and were given lands as payment for their military service (or else they would have to return to france with a lot less) so please dont say im not french, i am more french than most of frenchmen in france and dont call me Québécois because it is insulting and completly missing the point

One of the girls should have had a canon sexual relationship with Verso, instead of the sloppily integrated Persona social bonds system.
The whole ending scene of Lune fuming at Verso hits more of you know they fucked, as opposed to it being a player choice that doesn't really matter, and some dialogue you probably hammered through.

this is probably because i've played so many jrpgs, but i'm one of those people that runs away from a lot of random encounters and i never really felt compelled to grind all that often, only for money and if i really wanted to build a character i liked. the only games where grinding ever felt mandatory was in pokemon before gen 6

call me crazy but i dont think the music is even that good. Persona 5 is substantially superior it took 10 years to make a game even sort of in that realm which is insane as that was the amount of time it took final fantasy to make 10 games Fuck me gaming is shit
>>
>>721102046
E33 is good, but it's a little hackneyed. A little sloppy in places. Lune and Sciel not being very well fleshed out as characters at all is a very clear structural failing in the writing.

Hypnospace Outlaw is just great. I'm fully absorbed in a world consisting of dozens of characters all with their own intertwining storylines, every time I play that game. I feel like they're real people.

>Lumina are passive effects that you can activate once you have mastered the corresponding pictos
I wouldn't have needed 4 pages explaining what Lumina are if you had just called them what you called them on page 1, passive effects.
>>

Gustave didn't invent a perk converter because it's a stupid fucking name

None of the characters are white and none of the women have more than B-cup tits. That's textbook woke, lots of woke games before this have been doing the same thing for years.
Also the fans give the game a pass for that, which I count as a separate flaw. So that's two big ones.

I found it charming. Mainly because it's fits the gestrals and it has no bearing on the plot. FF7R has mandatory segments were they redid the beats to be more marvel/muscial. I stopped playing when red13 put on that fucking shinra outfit. The cringest writing i've ever seen.

Defense just decreases the standard damage received. It's different from having high HP because some attacks and other buffs are functions of the number of damage received or dealt so it can interact differently with other abilities.
Also the damage reduction is not linear so it's different than having high HP, it depends on the enemies and types of attack.
>>
>>721111462
health increases your hitpoints
defense lessens the number of hitpoints you lose when attacked

The writing in this game is confident and knows what it wants to say. FF7R is a mess and wasted potential. They could have just told the same story again or went in a completley different way after the events of part 1. Instead they just make every character speak in quotes and sound ominous. Even when renoir says things you don't understand at the start he still sounds like a character/person. Sephiroth and by extension cloud or so devoid of any character it's hard to see them as real people to be invested in

The combat peaks pretty early and gets more and more boring as you become OP. The lamp boss is probably the peak where the game actually feels challenging on a first playthrough. The back end of Act 2 is also kind of a slog. The Axion dungeons are too long and uninteresting, as is the reused asset dungeon inside in the monolith. Act 3 is also a big nothing after the game builds it up so much. It feels like they ran out of time and budget to do it properly.

Parts of the story are also retarded. The Matrix reveal added nothing and the game pushes a "good" ending that essentially judges the lives of almost all the characters you met worthless and secondary. Star Trek handled these themes with more grace 35 years ago.

Anon neither ending is a good ending, the game cannot spell out any more explicitly that Verso's ending has you betray and kill Lune and Sciel.
>>
>>721093814
sometimes facial animations look weird during serious moments and late in the game weird grey box like textures obscured the screen during cinematics. I think they could have maybe done more to develop ciel a lunes characters since they become seriously sidelined end game
>>
Man, some people in this thread are just lame. This game is a masterpiece but people need to be contrary.
>>
>>721113848
And yet that's STILL pushed as the right option. If they had the balls to portray Verso as the selfish, unrepentant shitbag that is without any redeeming qualities, I could have some respect for the writing. Unfortunately, you're supposed to sympathize with his tortured pretty boy soul, because the game was written by a woman.

Honestly the entire game falls apart at act 3. Not just the story but the entire gameplay system completely shits itself, because either you avoid 90% of the actual content just to have a challenge, you actually do all the content that you paid for and the entire game including the optional superboss becomes piss easy, or you gimp yourself and everything becomes an unfun slog.

>>
>>721116616
>wow so like it doesn't matter? great stuff
That's pretty much the main thing, deciding if it matters or not. The story and overall narrative is very open to interpretation in all kinds of directions, but retards get angry that it doesn't just tell you all the answers. Lots of things are kept intentionally vague and there are multiple ways to view everything and everyone. But this is too much to ask from the modern gamer

>>721117419
No, he didn't paint any people there, his mom painted all of them and the city after he died. It was just a fun fantasy Gestral world when him and Clea were painting and playing there as children.
>>
Act 3 balance. It's too easy to break the game. Absolute shitters are one shotting Simon and naturally the final boss who only has 2 million HP. They made lots of dialogue and scripted scenes for the final boss fight but because of their dogshit balance, many players are accidentally skipping all that. The observant ones are applying an enemy health multiplier, but it shouldn't be up to the player to balance the game.

there are a few enemies that intentionally try to trick you, but most of them are pretty straightforward. They even have reliable sound cues, so you could do it with your eyes closed if you have decent reflexes. Plus, you can always just dodge instead of parry if it's too hard

The combat is bad on a fundemental level.
The core idea of non real time combat is to have the weight of your performance on strategy instead of on mechanical skill.
Parry/dodge in this game are way too rewarding to the point where you can be a retard and still be invincible with parry/dodge.

I'm fine with parry and dodge since it adds some amount of player skill and it's just a game that ends anyway. It makes it so that you can beat enemies way out of your league on skill alone instead of stats and levels.

way too easy after finding even a single synergy in your pictos. an anon suggested splitting up the painter break damage limit picto into single digit increments that you can gain more of with each superboss you do in act 3. doesnt fix the issue but i think it would have helped. story starts really strong but goes on a downhill after the midpoint of act 2. the game is really good at its presentation of the story, but the story itself just didnt hold up to the presentation.
