Big bad horror thing as a metaphor for trauma.
The entire game is just collect X items (often journal entries, sometimes gas canisters, talismans, etc...) while running around a spooky sandbox.

The answer is really simple. The outside is super dangerous and certain death so you can't leave and can pick between starving to death or suicide by giving yourself to the monster.

I imagine this to be quite a comfy game where you are technically safe but you can see a beautiful hellscape of nightmares out of your window.

Nah, guaranteed bad end games are always a complete waste of time. Have the decency of at least telling me that my actions helped a greater good or saved someone who will live a good life, the world is too hopeless to have to suffer through that crap in my videogames too.

They're vampires.

>>
>>721119038
The only pseudo intellectual is you. But this is pointless discussion without directly discussing concrete execution. For you it will always be bad because you want it to be bad and lack the imagination for it to be more than bad.
>>
>>721118790
>a clearly communicated guaranteed bad ending
Is a complete waste of time. Why even bother doing anything when you know from the very beginning that it will bring your guaranteed demise with no beneficial reasons whatsoever? It's like paying someone $100 to break your nose: you will lose $100, your nose will be broken and you will pay even more money from hospital bills. Did you benefit from that? Maybe it will teach you the lesson that paying someone to hurt you is a bad idea, but by then, you have already lost.
>>
>>721118976
That horse has been beaten to death literally from every possible side. There is even a moe anime about eldritch horrors.
>>
>>721119367
Because it's interesting. A player is given the information that there is an unavoidable horrible death waiting for them at the end. But they just don't know how it will happen so their imagination is going to go wild. They will keep second guessing "maybe the game is deceiving me and there is actually hope". The game, contrary to its premise is actually quite hopeful and bright.

The end is far more horrible than they could have ever imagined it. Just because something is clearly communicated doesn't mean there is no surprise even if the clearly communicated thing happens to be the absolute truth.
>>
>>721119670
sounds gay i'll pirate it
i hate kobayashi maru bullshit
>>
>>721119797
The funny thing is what you find gay is the limits of the best of what your imagination and limited intellect can come up with, not something concrete since nothing remotely concrete about this exists. If you are given a canvas to paint on and someone tells you that you can only use black and all you can draw is men fucking each other in the ass then it's not the limitation that is to blame, but your inherently homosexuality driven brain.
>>
>>721114236
I look like this.
>>
>>721119670
And it once boils down again to the same problem: It's not about the destination, it's about the journey. It amounts to nothing if the game tricks me with tiny slivers of hope if at the end it will ultimately reach the originally announced 100% unavoidable bad end with no redeemable factors whatsoever, and it makes me feel like I completely wasted my time reaching a goal that never existed.

One game that comes to mind: Halo Reach. You know you're playing a character on borrowed time, you know that the whole planet will fall, you know you're fighting a losing battle, you watch how your partners fall one after the other and finally you helplessly watch your character desperately clinging to life as he's shot and ganged up from all sides. BUT he achieved his goal, he brought hope to those he helped escape and he helped bring the key to an eventual victory, it is an ending that leaves you with satisfaction because all that struggle amounted to something.

Let's just agree to disagree, I hate bad endings and I consider them a waste of time, and if a game is filled with nothing but bad endings and hopelessness, I have no reason whatsoever to subject myself to such depressing scenarios.
>>
>>721120014
yeah that's something a gay would say

>>
>>721120468
>announced 100% unavoidable bad end with no redeemable factors whatsoever
What does this even mean, this is completely subjective. You're just imagining something you're 100% going to hate no matter what. But even in an ending where everyone is going to die there can be absolutely beauty and shining human spirit. If someone manages to make such an ending but the player still feels warmth instead of emptiness then this is an absolute masterpiece.

they changed the NPCs to be randomly visitors now, so the stuff like trusting your gut feeling or the woman + dead son where the son is the visitor but the woman wasn't are now just a boring coin toss
in the demo it used to be that visitors only killed someone in the same room if they equalled or out numbered them so there was some methodology/deduction, but in the full game they'd kill anyone in the house
i didnt play it far enough but the later events apparently happen too close together which removes people
i think they also increased the FEMA visits, in the demo I think they showed up like once every 5-7 days but in the game they showed up like once every couple days which was shitty
i think they also moved up the day the visitors kill so instead of
>let them in > sleep > day time talk to them > evening > sleep > they kill
it went
>let them in > sleep > they kill someone
which encourages you to turtle
there's also a one-in-one-out mechanic so that if you had someone "taking up" the space someone's supposed to take, you have to either kick out the first person or reject the second

horror is sometimes a pretty good indicator of social trends
a few examples
>vampires
fear of forced marriage for women, anxiety about being unable to get and carry the burden of supporting a household for lower class men
>zombies
zombies are a mirror of the sheeple shit
people were starting to get alienated from greater society and seeing other people as a mass of hungry flesh, just grinding away at life while consuming mindlessly
liminal spaces, skinwalkers are just reflections of modern anxities and fears - spaces with social codes (liminal spaces which especially involve pools, offices and other worksites), social interaction (skinwalkers/wendigos/the entire "horror papers please" genre) and a commonly unidentified one; anxiety about a lack of world in the place, essentially anxiety derived from being unable to link one's existence firmly to the past (analog horror, which deals a lot with fictional history and interrelated events that tie into the modern day through some way)
I'm not saying that horror is PURELY defined by the current social climate but popular genres of horror are usually signs of the times because horror is for a significant part self-soothing, controlled exposure therapy

The concept of monsters hiding in plain sight is genuinely cool, but people keep fucking it up because they don't understand how to make it work when the player isn't part of the roster (you could but obviously the mystery doesn't work very well if the monster just kills you immediately) but an outside detective, and as a result they either turn the monster into a regular monster or they try really hard to limit the ability of the player to investigate, and it's not very fun.
The problem is that you can't just have the monster kill potential suspects because it just make the job of the player easier rather than harder.
I think a potential solution would to have more The Thing type monsters, where the monster(s) infect/replace existing suspects rather than just removing them entirely, and the deduction involve trying to figure out who is infected before everyone is.

This is how everything horror operates, shit being run into the ground either because of audience demand or corporate demand or both is a problem that's persisted for decades. Don't tell me horror 25+ years ago was any better when there were 9 Friday the 13th movies, 7 Nightmare on Elm Street movies, 7 Halloween movies, and 4 Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies before the year 2000, among a million other popular horror movies that got turned into yearly series where they exhausted every idea within 2-3 movies but kept dragging them out for money.

>the wendigo myth of deerskull headed humanoids
That's not actually the original myth at all, a D&D book of all things was I believe the origin of the deer head imagery. In the original stories the Wendigo refers to an evil spirit thought of as being incorporeal but you can feel it (like a bitter wind howling through the trees) or the person possessed by said spirit who feels uncontrollable hunger and is driven to cannibalize others or sometimes even themselves. You could become a wendigo if you engage in the taboo of cannibalism or were very greedy. It's very clearly a moral myth meant to warn against the dangers of selfish behavior that harms the rest of the tribe, but has resulted in psychotic delusions where people believe they're possessed. I can't find the source online but I know one of the historical folklore books in my library has a story about some white settler that was thought to have been possessed during a blizzard/famine, and was breaking into people's houses in the village to bite them which is wild.

What m retard ass does is start thinking that if I saw some bizarre reality bending shit that broke the known laws of the universe, like if a mannequin came to life and strangled me, or a monster came out of the wallpaper and chased me, no one else would be around to witness it, therefore possibly it could happen.

seeing as the intruder is literally wearing the skin of some poor human (someone the bearded guy met but turned down from his own home in the past), it's likely that the lanky but barrel chested body isn't the intruder's true proportions.
do keep in mind that the method of attack visitors use is unclear as we never see it and nobody ever survives to tell the tale. the only inkling we have is the release date trailer showing jacket guy pulling up his shirt and exposing a spiraling infinite void in place of a gut.

I learned that it's not full random today at the very least.
Few are guaranteed to be humans(disfigured guy but he dies after some time, bar guy but he is often the first to be taken by FEMA, widow, wireface) and some are guaranteed to be visitors(cashier, ballerina, coat guy, middle aged woman and more).
Everything else is a complete coin flip and sadly, a lot of them even though being human have their share of red herrings.

evidence does change for randomized guests, the problem is every character has a set of static evidences that will never change for them- they're MEANT to be false positives or false negatives since they're consequences of their personality or job, rather than if they're a visitor or not.
teeth and nails also become a non-evidence factor after a number of days. the visitors learn their own tells, and adapt, so people you invite in later will have less viable traits to check.
curiously enough, dirty nails invert as a sign of a visitor and turn into a sign of humanity instead. practically (if not all?) all visitors will have clean nails after a point, but some humans will have dirty nails only when human. this is most notable for the hagrid-looking guy, but also the researcher who has a bunch of shit written on his hands. when he's a visitor, he cleans off his fingers from the ink smudges... but when he's a human they're left there.

I don't think at any point she cared in slightest how he felt. I don't think Death ever really NOTICED him in any real sense.

A witch or any practitioner of dark magic from Navajo myth, often used to play the role of villain in traditional fairy tales. Their most well known spell is the ability to shapeshift into any animal by wearing their pelt. Modern Americans have taken the name for any sort of "human mimic", a malevolent creature that can shapeshift.

QoL Features:
Added save on quit feature
Manual saves no longer get deleted on game completion
Now, after completing the game at least once (specifically with end credits) and starting a new walkthrough, you're able to skip the 1st day (the tutorial with the Neighbor)

Fixes:
Fixed an issue where phone numbers and character identities would get randomized upon reloading
Fixed an issue where not all 3 cultists would enter your house. The prodigal son has returned.
FEMA agents no longer target characters with whom the player interacts more often than others
Various localization fixes for multiple languages

I'm genuinely wondering if /v/ is getting more and more stupid with every passing year.
The point of the game is to have enough live people in your house before FEMA and the pale guy arrive. That's it. Of course the characters have to be randomized as to whether or not they're visitors, there wouldn't be a game otherwise. Ambiguity means you might have to take a gamble. It's not a puzzle game.
>>
>>721168410
i had it happen to me that the cultists got snatched up by FEMA literally seconds before their leader came to check on them. Yeah, there's a bunch of ass "Lovecraftian" games that think the literal mythos and/or tentacles are what made it good.
If it uses the mythos, it's ass; if it uses its own cosmic horror, it might be ass but it at least has a chance at being interesting.

It's a spoiler but I think that Sonar Shock managed to have a somewhat interesting cosmic horror twist, particularly the final sequence in the Captain ending. There's still a bunch of shit in it that's retarded and makes no sense, but it's at least a fun sendup to System Shock and has some interesting, original concepts.

I think the concept of a "Sundown Town" could make for a TENSE horror game.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sundown_town

Think about it

>It's 1930 something
>You're some dorky looking Black guy from a Northern City, on your way to your Grandmother's funeral, but because of plot reasons, you have to get there via winding, almost forgotten backroads and forest paths in the Deep South
>Your only guide is pic related
>Have to make stops in the various "Sundown Towns" where the local white people may harass you, but also, reluctantly, do business with you
>The white stores *will* upcharge you just because they can. So you're going to need to get more money to survive the trip
>Sometimes to odd jobs in the safe black or "neutral" towns, maybe in the white towns, but they will be either risky, or absolutly demeaning

>But beyond anything, YOU MUST LEAVE BEFORE THE SUN GOES DOWN. Or you will be hunted down, have unmentionable things done to you, and then strung up and left to rot in a forgotten forest.

Interesting idea?

That's unfortunate.
Before I saw a quick review of the game, talked about how visitors were "sinners" of a degree and were always about expressing the 7 capitals sins, even encouraging the player to do so (such as telling you to shoot people).
Following that mindset I manage to do the demo with 0 deaths and without shooting anyone.

People being randomly visits I seems bad if there is no way to tell, beyond physical appearance.

oh you're talking about the charlie kirk thing, yeah it was pretty fucked up that people were just openly celebrating his death, I'm not a rightoid but you have to be a soulless husk to be cheering for the live execution of a man with a family simply for having a different opinion

My problem with "psychological" is most devs don't take the time to understand psychology or what having a mental disability like autism for example is really like.

It usually goes into guilt trip episodes or "mushroom sambas". Or just ripping off Silent Hill.

It's become a red flag for me at this point. I swear only the Psychonauts games have actually portrayed mental problems well.

taking him out of context again, he advocated for live executions for pedophiles and killers, but of course a pedo lefty would be offended by that and want to twist his words. man you guys are actually fucked in the head lol

>>721134095
They're basically analogs of tribes that had to face starvation. A warning story that no matter how bad it gets, DON'T FUCKING EAT EACH OTHER, IT'S WRONG.

If you call the psychic and tell him about your kombucha, he freaks out and explain it basically forces you to live in a recursive memory loop. It's also why "Death" likes you so much.

From by POV, it's not so much about Charlie Kirk (he was controlled op) as much as it is about wokesters openly wanting you dead for not bending the knee to their religion. You people are an enemy, simple as.
