There was nothing quite like those game, each entry being a unique mishmash of genres that just worked. Ratchet and Clank is pretty similar on the surface, but there's a certain 'je ne sais quoi' about the Jak series that makes it stand out from many of the other run-and-gun platformers of the era. The sudden transition from a collectathon to GTA-lite and then to a Mad Max-clone all give the games their own unique flavors that is hard to replicate elsewhere, in my opinion. The series also thankfully managed to avoid the modern touch.

I love the games but I suck ass at them lol
>>
I never played much of Jak 3, but from the little I did I felt it had too much vehicle stuff in it.

yea

I feel like whether you prefer Ratchet, Jak or Sly solely depends on which series you played first as a kid, and there's nothing wrong eith that since they are all probably similarly great.

I went back to the parts I struggled as a kid and I breezed through them. Isn't aging supposed to make you worse at videogames?

I think NG made Jak 3 way too casual after hearing complaints about Jak 2's difficulty. Let's recap:
>You get your first gun after the very first mission
>By the time you are out of Spargus and in Haven City again, you have the entire Morph Gun set from Jak 2 sans Peacemaker
>The afforementioned guns don't really matter once you have the Beam Reflexor + The Wastelander combo
>You get constant health upgrades and the Light Eco made it so you can heal pretty much anytime, anywhere
Maybe it's just my opinion, but Jak 3 really feels like baby mode Jak 2 a lot of the times.

How did they get away with the tone shift?

GTA 3 hit the stores + the early 2000s was the time everyone wanted to be edgy.

Jak was a bit more of a trend-chaser series. Jason Rubin actually mentioned it indirectly that Jak would change things up while "another series" (must have meant R&C) mostly stayed the same, as if that was a bad thing.

Truth.

Daxter is Mar.

At the risk of blowing a zoomer's irony-poisoned mind, "edgy" was not always a pejorative.
>>
Jak 1 is a decent but way too short collecting platformer.
Jak 2 is a shitty gta knock off with random checkpoints.
Jak 3 is jak 2 with more vehicles and minigames.Stuff nobody asked for.
