>Atmosphere.....por favor..
>>721214790>fucking UE3>looks better than most games out thereman I hope that art director is doing really well in life
>>721215090Jej
Space engine has some pretty good looking atmospheres.
>>721214405>>721214790One of the best looking games ever made. Almost 20 years old and it sill holds up.
>>721215103The real trvke is that art direction will always be more important than graphical fidelity. Take these non-descript shots from Metroid Prime 1 and 2. They look far better and more engrossing than 90% of games released before or after.
>>721214405>>721214790I have changed, I have changed. Just like you, just like you. For how long, for how long. Must I wait? I know there's something wrong
Now I will say that graphical fidelity is obviously not a bad thing at all. RDR2 has an incredible and very stylized art style based off the Hudson River School of paintings on top of what are probably the best graphics of any game to date.
>>721214063Genuinely the peak of vidya atmosphere, nothing has ever nor will ever come close.
>>721215391Was this ever translated into English?
>>7212154672 got an english patch yes
>>721215367rdr2 is a guilty pleasure for me. It's also insane they managed to make it run on last gen consoles
VTMB
>>721214063Majora's Mask is unrivaled imo

you guys might hate me for sayin this butelden ring has a great variety of atmosphere
>>721214063Every 5th and 6th gen game.
>>721220037For some reason, it seems very washed out and almost gray to me, like DS3.
>>721214063Skyrim
>>721214063Darkwood maybe?
>>721220037>Gee I wonder what's in generic catacomb #5
>>721214063Demon's Souls
>>721214063Ass Creed 1Destiny 1ODST
>>721214063Mother
>>721214063i would say bloodborne, but every damn souls game has the same atmosphere
>>721215103Same. When Mirror's Edge was released, almost all art directors working in video games should've been instantly blacklisted. It just showed that they all fucking sucked, and it felt like a real artist came in for a minute, made a masterpiece, then dipped. The void never got filled for some reason, and we still have shitty soulless corpo 'artists' directing generic realism slop.
>>721214063
>>721214063Okami really does pull you into another world. The style is so thick and consistent. I would often find myself just lazily walking around the world in a relaxed state. No real thoughts, just enjoying the atmosphere. The actual gameplay is Zelda-esque, if the dungeons were pathetically small. So the game offers no real challenge. But it keeps you going with all of its charms and novelty.
>>721214063Dark Souls 1
>>721215090
>>721214063I played through FFXI for the first time a couple years back and it made me just idle and sit there for minutes hundreds of times because it was that fucking dense.
>>721215367Will never forgive rockstar for letting the online die, such a massive world with so much potential but it didn't make nigger rap money so who cares.
Majora's Mask?
>>721214063Luigi's Mansion 1
>>721214063Kenshi.
>>721214405>>721214790absolvte peak
>>721222730>all those cunts grinding up literal millions for the business and farmsteads that never came>still haven't given people the ability to run private sessions >PC is still a hellscape of strafing chinkoids that you need to use a mod to avoidGTAO2 is going to be the quintessential merchant simulator just on the sheer amount of capital they lost with the failed cowpoke MMO.

>>721215391This one is great. Are you a fan of the new one natsu-mon? I was debating if I should use my hard earned money.
>>721214063all of my favorite ones
pokemon crystal
>>721223307How come 30 years later nobody can make blue skies like 90s Sega
>>721214063Playing this around Halloween time is magical
>>721214063GTA3
>>721223717The anti-soul fog demon that possesed the 7th gen consoles. Rumor has it, it still lives on today
>>721223451I've only played the demo because yeah it's pretty pricey, but the demo seemed fine. Isn't packing quite as much dense atmosphere as the older games and it's lacking the millenium kitchen designs, but being able to freely explore the countryside with botw-esque mechanics does enhance the summer vacation vibes
>>721214063SWAT 4
>>721214063Shadow of the ColossusSid Meier's Alpha CenturaiSOTNSuper MetroidOuter WildsI would say these are the games that were able to wow me with atmosphere as an adult. Complete mastery of it.There are numerous other games where the atmosphere impacted me, but I played them when I was still a kid, and it is easier to wow you with atmosphere as a kid than when you are an adult. There are also a couple other games with atmosphere I need to finish before making a determination on their atmosphere. There are also other games that are atmospheric at times, but not at others.
>>721215367A lot of RDR 2 is slop but I will say that they probably reached the pinnacle of pursuing realism in art direction. Anything beyond this is just chasing smoke and mirrors for little in return.
>>721220317elden rings asset reuse is literally as bad or worse than skyrim
>>721215367Yea Rockstar did a great job at capturing the essence of the school, wish more games would use classical art as an art direction.
>>721226554gta 6 will make rdr2 history.
>>721219619/v/ will never admit it but Skyrim is absolute sovl.
>>721214063thief 1 and 2
As far as nailing a feeling goes, Mega Man Legends. It feels like you're playing a late 90's anime to an uncanny degree.

>>721230501yea
>>721214063FFX of course
Paper Mario, SMRPG/Mario & Luigi too
>>721219721most games were forward rendered and complicated lighting was baked instead of calculated in real time or faked with SSAO
Bloodlines
>>721229596Yep, that is one I forgot to mention. Definitely one of the best atmosphere games out there.

Sonic Adventure
Abe's Oddysee and ExoddusGetting lost in the background art combined with the sound effects and music is the best
>>721214405>>721214790despite it's flaws this game really was something special
>>721214063>Nobody plays a video game for atmosphere. They play it for FUN!
Shadow of the colossus and ICO were also pretty good.
Reaching the top of Autumn Plains in Spyro is the most atmospheric moment in games I've encountered.

>>721234507i love the old mh visuals, the simplicity left lots of room for your imaginationhunts ironically felt more immersive because i was constantly envisioning in my head how the areas would look in real lifethe simple graphics worked as an "entry point" for my brain to conjure up images of what i thought the areas would look and feel like if i was actually therei enjoy modern mh visuals as well, but only because they're high quality and pleasant to look at, they fail to spark as much creativity in my mind the way the old games did
>>721234507I disagree, the new areas also look good
>>721220158Are you possibly colorblind?
>>721238336They do and I'm far from a purist (1k hours on World, 200 hours on Rise, 250 on Wilds so far) but since the 4th gen tend to look a lot more fantastical than their grounded 2nd gen counterparts. Plus, the segmented areas made the locales feel that much more grand. It also made the monsters that much more imposing yet believable when they were placed in a locale that looks just like a hyper realistic version of real life. Picrel, a place I hiked to last summer that looks just like forest and hills.
