Been preparing for Tomodachi by making a lot of donutsteels. A big part of the fun with the original was making the most out of the classic Mii maker and creating unique designs, so with a more versatile character creator there's a lot more you can do. Also going to dump the stuff I picked up on in the more recent Direct in case anyone's interested in that.

>new head shapes have been added, which include multiple subtler variants of the "anime chin" head shape and the default head shape, likely an answer to Miitopia players using the blush layer to shave off large chins and make the head smaller
>the skin tones section has a tab that lets you choose from a wider array of colors. The trailer doesn't show it off, but it is there. In Miitopia, the "foundation" option let you change a Mii's head color to something different from the default pool, but the body would remain unchanged, it's not known if this'll change just the head or the entire body this time around.
>many new eyebrow types have been added. However, none of these new brows match the eyebrows added in Miitopia's makeup system at all visually.
>hair from the original Mii maker has been transcribed and given more "natural" looking counterparts. Like Miitopia wigs, you can separate bangs from the back. Hair can be two-tone like Miitopia wigs too, and like that system, both the front and back share colors.
>eyeshadow, blush and wrinkles appear to be movable since the Miis shown off have them in very non-default positions, in past Mii editors you were forced to abide by default Mii proportion conventions
>mouths can now be rotated around, so every mouth can now smirk a little bit or be given a more natural asymmetry.
>all mouths can be given lipstick already built in, instead of being limited to a few lip mouth type options
>new facial features were added, but notably, there is a noseless option and Miitomo facial expression exclusive mouths have been converted to actual mouth types
>unlike Miitopia's eye shines, most of the eye shine shapes seem to be placed symmetrically. A flaw with Miitopia's eye shines was that while their asymmetrical placement was okay from a base position standpoint, eye movement and manual tweaks would be messed up. It also appears that the same shine shape is used in different positions, which confirms manual part placement.

They seem to be very secretive when it comes to showing off the eye menu and new eye types, but one of the girls shown off in the JP trailer has a new eye type. Unlike past Mii eye types it has thick, sharp eyelids and sclera, which feels a bit more anime-esque than past Mii eye types since all of those tended to have "quirky" designs and blunt edges. I still think a good chunk of people will make eyes from scratch with makeup for better accuracy/personalization, but having more options never hurts, especially for those who prefer the "Mii style".
>>
>>721266737
>especially for those who prefer the "Mii style"
That's me exactly, I also don't want to spend hours making perfectly accurate representations of characters but more than that one of the joys of making miis was using the limited amout of resources you had in creative ways.
>>
If they can be homos now, think it's something you have to set or are they all randomly straight, gay, or bi? Will yuri and yaoi babies be possible?
>>
>>721267183
Probabltly. Aside from that, hopefully they will allow for the creation of family trees for other miis besides their relation to the look alike.

Meant to say US trailer. In any case, a lot of the new options added feel like answers to complaints people had about both the classic Mii maker's limitations (lacking in presets that actually fit themes that don't exist, outdated hairstyles, no noseless, unmovable blush and wrinkles) and the Miitopia makeup system's shortcomings (no noseless, head shape limitations, buggy/awkward makeup mechanics). Feels like the best of both worlds in that regard

>>721267096
For me, I really like both Mii systems. A big part of the fun with the classic Tomodachi Collection Mii maker was making unique faces and archetypes with how limited the tools were, but the makeup system's merits come in how it's both very free-form in terms of the faces you want to make, but limited in the sense that you have to work with the 100 part system to the best of its abilities to make something good.

>>721267349
Too many mechanics seem to be made in response to Miitopia makeup creators' personal gripes. It's hard to fully explain, but if you know you know. Also they've been really coy about not showing off the bottom left option, and Miitopia's promo makeup Miis sucked ass too, so I wouldn't use the limited looking promo Miis as a hard deconfirmation either.

Given that the houses shown in the trailer cannot accomodate 100 miis, can we expect a large apartment to eventually be built as the island population grows as well as the island itself to expand to the degree of the last game? I hope it's not just a rectangle in the ocean with no terrain or smaller islands surrounding it.

The more recent trailer's island shot pans to the right a bit more, so we can see that they pretty much dumped a bunch of houses in the corner. It doesn't look too promising in that regard, but I do hope we get an apartment option or the ability to move houses around in a way that looks nice. The JP community realized that the flower models are reused from ACNH, so a big worry is that the New Horizons devs are working on it rather than the original team, which also explains the flat island builder looking aesthetic.
In terms of other locales that haven't been seen so far, these have yet to be seen:
>rooftop/skyscraper (Quirky Questions and idles)
>compatibility tester
>rankings board
>no outright de/confirmation, but Judgement Bay took place on the beach in Life and it's a lot smaller now
>all of the Leisure Island locales
>Job Application Building (cut in Shin Seikatsu/Life for 3DS, does not seem to be returning)
Notably, the lack of compatibility tester and rankings board mean that all of the horoscope elements that originally inspired Tomodachi's creation to begin with are gone now.

>>721267325
>hopefully they will allow for the creation of family trees for other miis besides their relation to the look alike
The first trailer showed off a brother/sister sibling duo, whereas in past games they'd exclusively use brother/brother or sister/sister in promo material to avoid potential incest. Seems like you can probably set relations from the get-go this time around.

>Too many mechanics seem to be made in response to Miitopia makeup creators' personal gripes. It's hard to fully explain, but if you know you know.
Just to try to better explain what I mean by the Tomodachi editor fixing Miitopia Mii makers' gripes on that game's editor:
>Miitopia's built-in eye shines have an asymmetry that makes using them a complete hassle, both for classic Mii-style creators and heavy makeup creators, so people opted to use generic shapes instead.
The ones shown off in Tomodachi conform to the generic shapes' symmetry for ease of use.
>Mii head shapes tended to be very large and chunky, so expert JP Mii makers tended to use the blush layer to shave off the head visually. This works fine in Miitopia, where the Miis face the camera 99% of the time, but in Tomodachi with free cam, the illusion breaks instantly
New head shapes were added that stylistically fit what people were looking for in Miitopia. Specifically, the "anime jawline" and default head shapes now have slimmer alternatives, with two being shown off in trailers.
>most Miitopia wig bangs were very short or didn't convey styles that well, so people tended to draw their own using mask/sticker layer
People will likely still do this for accuracy's sake, but the built-in bangs now go down much lower than before and look far less stringy. The "fuller" bangs like the one the K-pop grandma and young Asian boy use are examples of bangs that didn't exist in Miitopia's context.
>the flow of the back of Mii wigs looked like they were cut off, rather than having a seamless flow from the sides, so Miitopia makers tended to use blush layer colored as the hair to hide "bald spots".
Despite bangs and back being split apart, Mii hairstyles now have a proper flow to them, so there is no need to do this anymore.
>the stupid triangle nose
No nose option is available
To name a few things, I'm sure there's more things Miitopia makers griped about but the text limit keeps me from going on too much.

i gotta see the make up option to believe it

Probably obvious things, but the UI confirms that children/adult Mii categories still exist, when in 3DS it was mainly used to split romance categories. Unless significant changes are made between children and adult mechanics this time around, I'd assume this tag soft-confirms romance.

They didn't put much focus into it, but it looks like you can, ever so subtly. Made a shitty mockup of the main girl and 3 other Mii girls that share her head shape, it's easier to cross-analyze since the positioning in the editor is consistent across all height/weight variables and the Miis remain still this time around. The middle two girls share an ear shape, but the third one has smaller ears positioned up a bit more.

Adding to this, official Nintendo material often recommended lowering facial features significantly to make cute character designs, but doing so was at odds with the old Mii maker's limitations-- you'd get a large forehead and features like blush don't work as a result since it was made with the bland default props in mind. The new stuff they added into this new editor seems to take that into account, like movable blush and lower bangs, so I doubt they'd forget about letting you lower ears.

I'm a total Tomodachi aut so I still play the 3DS version pretty regularly. I 100% and got everyone to Level 99 on the DS original not too long ago, so I'm giving the 3DS one more love now. Oh wait, I was wrong on that one. Boy's Blazer was actually moved category-wise from the uniforms section to the masculine clothing section in the American release. I usually play the JP releases so my knowledge on what's cut in the others is a bit iffy.

>i wonder though how much theyre going to change/add to the formula. something as simple as being able to force interactions is a pretty big departure from the previous wait-and-see gameplay
I'm hoping they don't give you godmode levels of control when it comes to character interactions. I don't mind introducing Miis too much, since sometimes you'll get islanders who refuse to make any friends for a long time, but I'm hoping it doesn't extend beyond basic things like that. Something I liked about the DS entry specifically was that it was very easy for friends to network with one another, once a Mii made a friend, they'll often befriend Miis that person's friends with passively without your input.

>I do wonder if they'll give this game its own whole direct like they did with Tomodachi Life
It's possible because nintendo hasn't shown us a lot yet. The only thing we got from the new trailer is we can make two miis meet up with each other and showed us a new mii editor for a bit. I imagine the direct will be showing off most of the customization like the island, or the miis plus some online features like viewing other people's islands and confirm there's a switch 2 edition with mouse controls, etc.

Something I noticed about the dancing grandma Mii is that while she does adhere to eye shine symmetry I mentioned before >>721266048, said eye shines still look messed up, with the shines actually going over the implied eyelid area. In Miitopia, this error would often happen with certain eye types and you had to correct it manually by layering pieces on the Eyelashes layer to cover the eyelid area, since eyelashes are layered above the eyes layer and don't move around like the irises and shines. Most of Tomodachi's promo Miis make sure their eye shines are rendered/placed properly, so the fact this one still isn't fixed also hints at the makeup system's comeback/a versatile editor, since they wouldn't make such an error if it was more limited.
More interestingly though is that she has sharp lashes all around, with the one normally baked into that eye type being replaced with a 4th sharp lash. Miitopia's built-in eyelash system originally wasn't able to remove base Mii eyelashes, only add on top of it, so it has me wonder if all eye types have a lashless variant now.
Excuse the crappy makeup mockup of the grandma Mii, her head shape does not exist in the old editor and her wrinkles/blush also needed to be made manually. At least this also shows how much lower hairstyles can go now.

>>721294275
EPD7, with Ryutaro Takahashi directing and Yoshio Sakamoto producing. A lot of the off-beat design decisions of the DS and 3DS game came from them, and the entire Mii system as a whole could be attributed to Sakamoto going "I want to be able to make my weird mug". Not sure what Takahashi is up to, but Sakamoto's recently doing stuff for Famicom Meitantei Club, and of course, like the other anon said, Rhythm Heaven's currently in production.

Adding to the lowered bangs for Tomodachi, something I've noticed recently with Mii games in general is the phasing out of "default-aesthetic" Miis. Even in games like Pikmin Bloom, the preset Miis given to you are not raw defaults, and tend to have significant proportion changes to look cuter. In Tomodachi's context, something that stood out to me was that options that were originally used for default Miis, like the round point nose, have become an "alternate" type/not placed first like they were in past games, with a smaller, more conventionally cute sharp nose being used in its place. Makes me wonder what the "raw default" Mii in Tomodachi will look like.

Regarding the editor positions. The fact that slim, dainty brows and a nose smaller than the original default are now the first ones placed makes me believe Nintendo's shifting to more "conventionally cute" looking mob/generic designs. The 3DS era kind of shifted focus when it came to promo Miis and adding more anime-esque features, but with the position swap and new hairdos and features that play into lowered faces, it seems like they're going all-in.

Probably the last overanalyzing post I'll make (unless another anon's interested or curious about something), but this one seems like another thing added to respond to Miitopia makers' complaints. The "no-bangs" wig fringe is a very popular choice with Miitopia makers, since it allows them to draw on whatever they want, but a large complaint people had with that bang type was that the top of it juts out ever so slightly that it creates a seam in the makeup hair people draw on. It's normally unnoticeable if you make hairstyles that match the wig's hair color, but if you have a character with accessories, it becomes very noticeable.
The girl with the twin drills ojou-sama haircut also has no visible bangs at all, and the hair is parted in a way that goes up further than the wig equivalent. It seems like that'll be the hairstyle to use for custom makeup hair creations. I do hope for more parting variants, since the middle part does create a spot in the middle of the Mii's head when looking at them from above.

I really don't know what they were thinking with the switch sports avatars, did they really think they'd be a good mii replacement?

I'm not sure how much Sakamoto will be doing stuff with Famicom Detective Club in the future, since Emio's interviews revealed he's been grooming another writer to take over the series. Hopefully he and the original director are working on this tomodachi.

I'll be sure to pop my head in to analyze and post if any new info pops up, although I'll be busy for a few months starting late October so if any news shows up after that, I'm gone until about February.
But I'll be sure to post in the threads once the game's out, since that's thankfully in spring. Never been more hyped.

>>721303601
That's good to hear, Sakamoto's strange sense of humor definitely carried the series so far.

Pretty sure everyone already forgot about it first. As underwhelming as it was I do hope we get another that does refine things, it’s own “resort” game, so to speak. May be a hot minute though given they’ve been working on whatever the online playtest is
>>721303272
Wanted to do their own thing with it, interview mentioned them tossing around ideas for sportmates designs. Plus given how inflexible the old mii creator system was which left a lot to be desired it probably was to get around that. There was an old thread that had an anon go into detail with all that stuff may be the anon in this thread actually lol but it was done with some intentionality regarding how mii’s work
Personally I didn’t hate them, could make some cute designs, but it did leave a lot to be desired in of itself. Needs its own miitopia-like overhaul

Is Tomodachi life switch 2 only?
How am I supposed to play it.

It's gonna be on Switch 1 as well, which is good for me too.

Probably gonna wind up adding all the Fuga characters if the limit on villagers isn't too tight. I appreciate that someone re-upped the Miis for the them on Miitopia.

I once made all characters from a song of ice and fire, specifically the dance of dragons and the blackfyre rebellion

Wonder if it’s gonna get any switch 2 features even though it’s just a switch game. Would be nice to be able to use the mouse since we don’t have the touchscreen available

Was it when the game was new? I think I remember talking about how Mii hats worked, in that there's four different settings for them and how most Mii games during the time refused to apply multiple headgear sets and facemasks and the likes. During Switch Sport's launch, that was definitely true, and I still stand by the Sportsmate system being a workaround for aesthetics that were impossible for Miis at the time (anime-esque hairstyles, curlier hair, layered headgear etc.) even if the application was scuffed.
The funny thing is that most of these base Mii system limitations actually did end up getting a workaround down the line in Pikmin Bloom. In Bloom, since a lot of the F2P rewards system relies on Mii cosmetics, they finally changed how the systems work. In past Mii games, you were only allowed to put one piece of headgear on a Mii at a time, but in Bloom, you can layer hats, glasses, and masks. The glasses and masks don't really work too great since they don't take Mii facial features in mind so a lot of clipping occurs, but you can layer if you so wish.
It's also the first Mii game that lets you have asymmetrical "blush" through the facepaint cosmetics. In past Mii games, the blush layer that wraps around your Mii's head is actually a texture that covers half of the Mii's face and is mirrored, but Bloom's the first that adds cosmetics that wrap around the face that doesn't do that. Even Miitopia's versatile creator forces symmetrical blush.

If the island is more open and miis can just wander wherever they want now, I wonder how the stuff like time-sensitive events are handled now. Will miis just teleport to that area when one starts?
>>
>>721308475
My guess is that it'll be like Animal Crossing, where the islanders will teleport offscreen when you don't see them, and for major events the map might reload.
>>
Post some Miis, anons. I want to see what you guys made

What's the funniest relationships you've ever seen form while playing? Which of your miis got NTR'd?

did you know that the game doesn't keep track of familial relationships past parent/child/sibling? I didn't until I decided to see what the family tree looked like by plotting it out myself

I do occasionally reply to Sportsmate posts, so it could've been me. Maybe it was in a Gunner waifu thread, I lurk those too just to talk about Miis since those threads are active and waifuposters are surprisingly civil about honest discussion. In any case, the Sportsmates definitely exist to serve the niche 3DS-base Switch era Miis didn't have at the time. Just a shame the facial variety was so lacking.

Shit you may be right. But yea the lack of customizable features did hinder them more than helped. Biggest crime i’d say is everyone having to have the same body type. Only further makes everyone look the same, not to mention hindering the extra character types as well. Everything was far too streamlined, they need to loosen those reigns for more expression also don’t lock customization behind the weekly limited-time catalog grind, now THAT’S the real “what were they thinking” with that game

Default male has a niche following thanks to Tomodachi being a much bigger deal in Japan. Mii culture's a bit different in Japan in general, since Wii Sports wasn't a pack-in game, it sold far less and didn't become the game that "defined" Miis like it did in the West, instead, Tomodachi took the role because kids could bring the game to school and show it off to their friends and because it's a game that actually gives Miis a semblance of a personality thanks to the lifesim format. It's also why the fan outcry was so huge in Japan when the June 18th Direct (Tomokore DS's 15th anniv) didn't show off the game, and why the reveal is NoJ's most liked tweet.
Going back to Default though, he's usually remembered as a "rite of passage" kind of character because a lot of players started by making really shitty default male looking selfinsert/friend Miis before actually having to differentiate facial features since the game doesn't work if they all look the same. It's also easier to make art of him and have people relate compared to personalized OCs so people use him for shitposts too.

Do you think Nintendo scrambled to make the new tomodachi in response to the outcry or was it something they had cooking before then?

I want to say they had something planned for a while considering they renewed the Tomodachi Life copyright for some time, but the reveal happing on the immediate next Direct felt like a rushed damage control response, since it barely showed off anything of note.

While no Miis without eye shines have been shown off yet, it's safe to say they're optional, since a few promo Miis share an eye type but have shines in different positions, like the blonde girl here vs. the two in >>721285351. The two girls in that post share eye shine positions and shape, so it seems like there'll be preset/default positions you can probably toggle or move around. I'd assume there's an option to turn off eye shines, since they added the ability to turn off noses, so it'd be strange for a more superficial feature to be mandatory.

Right here >>721298392, it was in the second Direct trailer when they were showing off the player's lookalike Mii. I'd say it's the biggest soft-confirmation that we'll get Miitopia's customization, since the near-unanimous complaint back then was being unable to get rid of the nose.

My best picks so far are:

>Anya (Mouthwashing)

>Seiko Ayase
>Sho' Nuff

The one thing I'm hoping for that would be a game changer would be letting us choose abnormal skin colors like blue.
