I don't care about this little chime tapping tellytubby. He should've rightly been burned alive by the Last Judge. How did he even make it to the citadel? LOYAL MERGWIN is the best character, perhaps the only character save for Grindle.

Hallownest no question. Much of Pharloom sadly feels like videogame levels recklessly cobbled together.

Feels bad beating game too late. The threads are turning into typical HK shitposting bait trash threads. I have little time before all meaningful discussions dies out
>>

I happen to find City of Tears pretty overrated, but Silksong doesnt have anything quite as cozy as Greenpath/Garden and is overall too bleak/run-down.

>Faith
>Sin
Nigga one of the primary themes of the game is that the religion is a bullshit means of supplicating the workforce, claiming that this little boy's 'faith' protected him from the hundreds of insanely murderous hazards is insane. He is a baby-yoda tier marketing ploy and it righteously pisses me off to see so many trannies-in-training falling for cuteness over LOYAL MERGWIN's countless virtues.
>>
What’s the purpose of this big empty water cave at the end of putrified ducts? Is this another “sorry, story hasn’t happened yet, come back later” act 3 thing?
>>
>>721264972
Hallownest feels like Team Cherry first brainstormed what a bug kingdom would logically look like and how its areas/infrastructure would interconnect. Pharloom feels like a gamey collection of Metroidvania areas for the most part. Also Pharloom doesn't emphasize the CLIMB aspect as much as the developers initially told us it would. Reaching the Cradle feels no more elevated than reaching Crystal Peak.

Confidence, charm, and selflessness. Sherma is a blatant narcissist who employs performative kindness and naivete for personal advancement.
>>
>>721265349
>Nigga one of the primary themes of the game is that the religion is a bullshit means of supplicating the workforce
Just because GMS is running a jonestown cult doesn't mean the game is critiquing the idea of having faith as a whole, the most virtuous and sinless of the pilgrims also happens to be the only one who completes his ascent unscathed
>>
>>721265349
The religion of the pilgrims is older than the current state of the Citadel, so we have no reason to believe it's fake. The Citadel itself is older than the whole Silk ordeal and they pilgrimaged there before it turned into a mechanical monstruosity.

No, it's mentioned Herrah is a "common beast" when her husband dies pre-HK lore, because it was considered strange for them to be together. It's assumed her husband was a "pure Weaver" or something whereas Herrah was more like the monsters you fight in the Weaver area in HK.

>>721264972
Hallownest feels more well thought out and has more memorable areas.
>lake above city of tears
>the Pale King's wyrm carcass coiling around Kingdom's edge and covering the area in "snow"
>the Void lighthouse
>Mantis village keeping Deepnest in check.
>3 higher beings

Meanwhile Silksong
>rainy/water area under the infected maggot swamp and underwork lava pools
>Bilewater connected to the Vaults for some reason
>Exhaust Organ's mass grave not connected to the whiteward corpse dump/cremation chamber, instead it leads to the Architect.
>Bilewater got polluted by the Putrified ducts, they don't actually connect to anything, the industrial area of the Citadel is barely connected to Bilewater(and even then at worst it just produces smoke and scrap metal)
>Greymoor directly worked for the Citadel but is separated from the Citadel by a jungle full of cultists and Vietnam
>super cold snowy area right on top of a dried out desert

>>
>>721264972
Silksong is better designed gameplay wise in how it lets you approach things from multiple ways, and be able to deal with stuff without needing all the tools.
Hollow Knights is better thought out as a world.
>>
>>721265580
weirdly i had the opposite experience
i never had to go "ok where the fuck do i go now really?" with HK but had to with the sequel. then again could just be a side effect of brain damage caused by browsing this site for years
>>
>>721265893
i played the whole game with it and didn't have any issue with the pogo. there's multiple crests with a similar pogo so they accounted for it.
>>
>>721267342
Greymoor is based because the reason it's so grey is because it sits directly under the citadel and is covered with spent silk dregs that are constantly falling from it. All the bugs you fight in that area are ones tasked with gathering/cutting/storing those dregs to presumably return to the citadel, which is why they have the "weapons" they do, they're all designed for silk cleanup. It's one of the more well thought out places.

If it was well thought out Greymoor would be under the underworks, maybe even the whiteward dump so they can justify needing to reclaim silk from the ashes of dead bodies/justify the gloomy atmosphere(but this wouldn't explain the rain either).

His faith inspired him to go beyond his limits and show compassion to everyone who had fallen. Religion in of itself isn't a bad thing: it's only the organization that abuses faith and monetizes it for its own ends that's evil. God's church is the people, not the organizational structure that controls the people. That's why it's so nice to see Sherma's faith rewarded in the end. Under his guidance, it's possible the religion of Pharloom will be changed for the better. Rather than one seeking immortality through physical means, it could someday be one that seeks spiritual immortality through good deeds and good works!

There is no rain. That's all silk dregs. You're right though it could have been placed a little better. It's still technically under the citadel but there's other stuff in between. If it went Citadel -> Whiteward -> Underworks -> Greymoor it would make the most sense.

hallownest is a much more coherent and interconnected world. We used to think The Hive stuck out like a sore thumb, but silksong has several shallow awkward areas like the hive (wisp thicket, mount fay, verdania, the coral tower, sands of karak, even the new abyss)
HK1 was also more true exploration and a world that you carve your own path through which was only bad for people who had a brainlet moment like >>721265580
>>721267471
HK1 outright gives you more freedom in exploring areas in different orders without having the necessary tools. Not to mention pogoing on your own shade
SS is a lot more railroaded. You get branching paths or different ways to reach a location but no real route variety
>>
>>721268061
>It doesn't though, it sits under Wisp Thicket and Sinners Road
The world is not 2D, anon. The Citadel is on top of the mountain, Underworks and Whisp Thicket are inside the mountain. Greymoor is somewhere on the middle, which is bellow the Citadel, but not underneath it.

greymoor feels like a complete nothingburger because theres literally fucking nothing in it. Its like the Forgotten Crossroads in terms of "not much specific circumstances happen here" except that makes sense specifically for the crossroads because they were in fact crossroads, where a lot is blatantly stored and theres some commerce
Meanwhile in greymoor literally nothing happens. Theres no notable groups or organizations to speak of, other than the crow fuckers that have literally zero defined interactions or goals with anybody else, which is comically shallow compared to the Soul Sanctum or the Mantis Tribe or whatever

like genuinely, almost every single area in silksong that isnt directly attached to the Citadel is a complete unfiltered nothingburger plot-wise. Just compare the ants to the mantis tribe

It's fucking insane how the entire lore of Greymoor is hidden behind two optional NPCs.
They'll tell you how it used to be the main food-production site of the citadel until the zealots took the reigns from the weavers (or gms took control of Pharloom) and turned it into a silk-capturing site.
That's why the weapons of the enemies in the area are shaped that way. That's why the area consists of two windmills (that's what the two towers are). And that's why there's a food storage hidden above the disgraced chef boss fight.
Without those two telling you this, you'd never know.

Lace 3 is a way more intense and complex fight of course, but I don't think it has the narrative impact TC intended simply because the game doesn't shed enough light on Lace as a character and her interactions with Hornet are scarce, especially next to all the NPCs Hornet constantly runs into and forms bonds with.

I think the bigger issue is that the needolin is rarely used. You could have used it only once after you've gotten it if you didn't go back to some of those doors, which doesn't exactly make players think it's a tool that they have at their disposal.

I think the hint with Mount Fay is meant to be the outside areas of the slab, since you only really have one way to go to escape it forces you to discover the torches and thus the heat mechanic. Upon learning that, I figured that Mount Fay involves a leap of faith.

Feels like she was meant to be the act 1 boss after you find the wall grip, but they figured the fight would be to hard to instantly go in to after getting it so they sectioned her off for later. Makes sense because the area is extremely short and they even threw in the cancer kid boss there.

Yeah hunter is the sweetspot between range and attack speed for juggling
Reaper is fucked because it's slow and alternates between and up and downward slash, so the hitbox changes.
Wanderer is ok but the smaller range simply makes it less generous.

I've heard witch and shaman can be good for it but I imagine they have the same issue reaper does with speed.
Beast probably ends up being the same as wanderer.
Architect sounds completely wrong for the job but I guarantee someone did it with that crest and will swear it's secretly the best option for flea juggle.

Hallownest feels more cohesive. I think Silksong's lore and story is a little messy and that it kinda puts the map into a detrimental place but I also think that's because Silksong's Godhome equivalent is absent and in the future is probably going to clear things up a bit. Assuming it gets that.
Pharloom looks way better if we ignore the cohesive aspect.
Pharloom also plays better to my liking outside of some of those extremely pesky areas that have like no indication of existence.
Hallownest's best areas are better than Pharloom's, but overall Pharloom outmatches Hallownest.
The Infection in Hallownest being built up over the game is better than Silk+Void combo dragging things down. I think SilkVoid is cooler in theory but in action it's not as cool as the infection because of how sudden it is.

I preferred Hallownest until Bilewater. Then I realized that the Citadel and it's areas aren't meant to be natural. Once I took that into consideration, things started making sense, with the one exception that Mt Fay really should have been to the east. Personally I'd have let this game simmer for another year if it meant the could turn the Coral Tower into it's own area above Sands of Karak, and move Mt Fay to the east above Putrefied Ducks. If they did that, Pharloom would be S tier design.
East Mt Fay with ice caps and clear water sources that provides natural flowing water that runs down into the Lake in the Ducts, Bilewater, Greymor (which is very rainy) and Lost Verdania and Far Fields. It naturally runs westward and creates the sea like Coral Tower and the lush areas of the Moss Grotto beneath.
Then the Citadel gets built midway this natural flow. Starts harnessing the water through the building of the Ducts which in turn dries out everything west. This creates the Sands of Karak and the Blasted Steps. Only reason Mosshome gets sparred is that it's further down enough to get other water sources.
Meanwhile they pollute Bilewater with the wastes from the Underworks which in turn pollutes the Ducts and even creates the dreary atmosphere of Greymor which isn't quite polluted, but doesn't look right. It might even explain why Verdania become desolated. Far Fields again only escapes because it's further down enough and perhaps the volcanic activity affords it some natural fertility to the soil.
The point is everything about the Citadel is unnatural and it utterly fucked everything in the area, disrupting a natural environment.

>Sands of Karak should should have a larger area above it that connected to the slab. It's a dried up coastline, after all, and should be at the surface.
>Wisp Thicket should have been between Shelwood and Grand Gate
>Cogwork Core should extend downwards to connect with Underworks
>Whiteward should be shifted eastward under Whispering Vaults. Greymoor should have been directly beneath Whiteward, collecting silk dregs from corpses that filtered downward.
>The Marrow and Farfields should be swapped
This would have fixed the biome incoherency issues of the game for the most part, I think.

I much prefer Pharloom. Seems to be the unpopular opinion around these parts.
But I find it really beautiful how act 1 is relatively linear (while still having optional areas to explore), only for act 2 to open up significantly, with the Citadel as a branching out point. As you explore in a much more open ended manner, from Citadel's Songclave or the outside's Bellhart.

And I really like the three strongholds of Bonebottom, Bellhart, and Songclave too. And the other various little camps. And I like how the various regions work together as well, like how you've got the factory portion of the citadel, to support the mechanical constructs of the greater citadel. How the Ducts and Bilewater are contaminated by the Citadel's refuse.
And it's also kind of impactful to climb up towards the Citadel, when the most civilized piece of architecture you've had at that point is probably Halfway Home at Greymoor (I love Bellhart but it's kind of a shithole held together by strings). It serves as quite the contrast that worked on me versus the harsh lands I had to traverse to get there.

And of course, I super love how much movement and platforming Pharloom's level design involves. But I'm guessing that element was a bit outside the scope of the question so let's just disregard it.
Though addendum. I still think Hallownest is awesome. I just find Pharloom cooler.

I don't agree
The Marrow is dry because it's precisely between. Far Fields has greenery because it's getting water from above (or did once upon a time), and likewise Mosshome is green because it caught the run off from what used to be the Coral Tower area.
Marrow meanwhile would have been between the two, and Greymor doesn't seem to allow for any run off bellow (and it's further east anyways)

It's Lifeblood, but yes. A highly regenerative, mutagenic substance that spreads like an infection. The Knight can't overdose on it because he's half pale being (who can resist its mutagenic properties) and half void entity, while Hornet can only resist its effects to a certain extent.

For mortal bugs it will horribly disfigure and mutate you into some horrific abomination, and even the Void stays well away from this shit, plasmified enemies won't turn abyssal. Zylotol and Zango are idiots playing with forces far beyond their comprehension that wound up consuming them in the end.

I feel like Silksong ends at the 80 percent point because it brings up tons of story beats from HK's Godhome without having the finality of it, and that finality is "I broke a light bulb in Heaven and now I'm manifesting Hell into my being". Hornet even talks about it a bit with the snail shaman and the heart hunt is reminiscent of this too.
I don't think Team Cherry wants the DLC for SS to be an alternative ending, I think they want it to be the definitive ending and are just pulling back right now.

This is baseless conjecture.
But I'm thinking they might have traded the Coral region for the Blasted Steps / Sands of Karak because it might have looked more beautiful and grand than the Citadel itself. Which might have made it an extremely cool and impressive set piece to play through, but it might have also felt really unimpressive if the mighty Citadel, that's supposed to look pristine and almost perfect (on the surface at least), would look inferior.
But having the Coral place connected to Bonebottom, might have also made players feeling too inclined to stick to the west side of the world map as much as possible. I don't know.

A part of me really wish to play this version of Silksong. But I also feel like it's probably presumptuous of me to assume it would have been better just because it looks beautiful.
In the end I am lacking crucial knowledge.

Lace is voided. Silk wants to protect lace so she made a cocoon of silk in the void as a sort of barrier. She then used her silk to try and destroy Pharloom. Hornet with the everblooming manages to purge the void from lace. Hornet then tells Silk that she’s going to save lace, silk gives Hornet all her silk. They go up, the flower disintegrates, but little bro is there to save Hornet. They get saved. Lace cries because her mom actually cared for her and now she’s dead.

That's because a vast amount of her circumstances are reminiscent or similar to Hornet's, so she's very much a younger reflection to Hornet's character. Take what happened to Hornet and the opposite likely occurred with Lace. We know Lace took up the role of 'protector' of Pharloom, but she was more like a rabid dog attacking everyone she met more than an actual guardian. She's very pitiful because she misunderstands the point of her creation and lashes out because of it. Basically, she's a younger Hornet who never had real parents or mentors to raise her.

three of the five ending s in the base game of hollow knight including the two dlc endings have the main character lose his shell and channel the void/merge with the void. That’s just where he is after the ending. Same with all the other billion siblings chucked into the void that we see behind him for a split second.

It's 80 ammos max with 3 damages per shot. 240 damages total. Your basic nail attack when fully upgraded does 21 damage.
For comparison the Silkshot you get with the Forge Daughter is 510 damages total, although that one use silk and requires resources to craft.
So, the cannon is trash, but it's fun enough to go BRRRR when you can afford it

I'm still unsure about the "pale being bring sentience/sapience to bugs" thing.
They seemingly only uplift shit like beetles and spiders and flies, whereas races like Mantises, Wasps, Fleas(?), Ants, Slugs, Snails, etc seem to have had culture and society before the Pale Beings showed up

GMS created the citadel with her weaver army by conquering and destroying the surrounding lands. The weavers lived there for a time as the demigod ruling class with the local bug population as their slaves, until they learned they were "just" ascended normalfags instead of "true" divinity. They converted the citadel into a giant industrialized musical instrument and made the religion into being about singing forever to keep GMS asleep forever through the power of industrialized song. Then, they bounced.
The Pharloom weavers were a skeleton crew left behind to ensure the machinery was working properly and that granny was indeed still asleep. There also seem to be dissidents who remained loyal to her, like Widow, that were enslaved by the majority weavers.
There aren't any weavers left in the game because they're borderline infertile and having kids is very hard for them, so their losses due to time can't be easily replaced.
It's not clear why the Citadel wants to capture you. They're somehow enslaving captured weavers for their silk but why specifically is never mentioned. Lace frees you at the start of the game because she's worried GMS would want to replace her with you, and then tries to kill you when you stick around instead of running away.

>>

Yeah, there's naturally occurring bug races that are sapient but there's also bug races "uplifted" by higher beings. This was a point of contention in the original HK because the Pale King showed up with his uplifted bugs and started taking over everything.

The "input reading" in this case, is just enemies attempting an escape as you approach.
I almost don't even know why people even call it input reading. Even if technically accurate, it kind of implies there is something more to it by calling it that.
In practise the end results are very mundane. You approach, they attempt to back off. But you're fast and you'll hit them anyway.

It was always malicious.
Back in HK's lore, it was explicity told to you that it was taboo to use lifeblood, and tbose who usee it were criminals like joni.
Now in silksong we realise why, because while it has benefitial properties, these most likely are a lure, a trap, to get people hooked up. To normal bugs, once they start abusing the substance, they become mindless husks whose only purpose is to become seeds of lifeblood to propagate it, like an infection.
Also, back in HK there was a hidden higher beibg related to void and lifeblood, he even appears in godhome too. So yeah, lifeblood is just a higher being like the radiance, and as all higher being, they only care about controlling bugs.

>It's not clear why the Citadel wants to capture you.
The cages mentioned partial-Weavers being sent to specific areas, likely to keep them powered with their silk. Most likely the Citadel wanted to use Hornet as a power source and farm silk from her until she died. Since she could generate it naturally, she'd be a huge asset to the Citadel.

I’m pretty sure that’s still accurate. There’s a reason the clockwork core, the most technologically advanced area in the game, is next to where GMS is. There being sentient cultures before GMS just means there could have been a pale being around before her. Maybe it’s the fluffy guy on the mountain. In hollow knight if I remember correctly, the white lady is a native to the nest, so sapience doesn’t need to be retroactively justified.
>>

The flower's protection meant ghost didn't recognize her, so it was just formless void attacking.

>who created the citadel?
Grand Mother Silk. She established her kingdom there and conquered the surrounding smaller kingdoms to cement her empire. That's why the Coral Gorge dried up into the Sands of Karak and Verdania is long collapsed.

>what eas the role of the weavers of pharloom?
They were originally the nobility of the kingdom. GMS raised small nonsapient arachnid beast bugs up to bipedal sapience and treated them as her own children. She tried to suppress the truth that they weren't actually descended from her, but they found out anyway.

>Why are there no weavers left in the game? Did they left or did they just all die out?
When the Weavers uncovered the truth they turned on GMS. Some of them fled, leaving Pharloom to migrate to Hallownest. Others were captured and killed. The Citadel's bugs, in their religious fervor, also cannibalized the Weavers for their silk generation. They even tracked remote Weavers and Weaverspawn from other lands to bring them back to Pharloom in service. Widow is implied to be a quarter Weaver spawn, brought back to Pharloom and enslaved to service.

>Why did GMS want to capture you?
The Citadel wanted to capture Hornet because she's a living source of silk, but the Citadel was manipulated by GMS to bring her there because GMS wanted Hornet as a surrogate daughter, closer to the Weavers of old and purer in nature than the rebellious punk that is Lace.
>"Full Chamber to the kingdom of the White Wyrm. Claim the Weaver, in half part. Last of their line. Sensed strong with Silk.

Regarding that I have two mutually exclusive theories:
First, that the idea that sentience was given by the pale king is pure bullshit that he used and spread as propaganda to avoid people from gettibg put of Hallownest in mass.
My second theory is that this is a characteristic unique to pale beings, but the pale kibg is not the only pale being, the white lady also is, which could explain why there were sentient bugs before the pale king and after his death(?), but still you don't find intelligent life outside any kingdom.
>>
>>721278331
GMS is sealed away, so they couldn't get more silk from her, I thought. All the silk around the citadel is old as shit and/or from the weavers that were once around. The Citadel at that point is running on fumes, and since they can't find good replacements, all the shit requiring silk to run is going to stop working soon, which means GMS would become fully awake and break out. She was already manipulating the Citadel by controlling the silk left around through the barrier, but most she could do was cause people to go apeshit, I think. Lace and Phantom were born from her need to breed, but she was already satisfied having Lace for a daughter than none at all.

This might shock you to hear, but they actually made an entire, huge area with the design of the Coral Tower and then scrapped it for lore reasons, they wanted those lush environments to be in the past. I understand where they were coming from, beautiful coral ocean doesn't really fit in Pharloom's present.
