books and in general writing helps you expand your own knowledge base and see things in many different perspectives, but the same can be said for single player video games, so I'm not sure why people think of games as something less than reading a book

He seethes at the fact that Trevor is his most iconic role. Even in other unrelated roles his """acting""" isn't even that different. He lacks range.

What is the opposite to hyped, repelled?
That is what pretty much all that i've seen about GTA6 did

Dostoevsky is the most basic bitch "intellectual" literature there is. Literally the same as Christopher Nolan is for movies.

he does have a strong point

Why does this guy seethe so much about GTA? It's the role that 99.9% of the people who recognize him knows him from. The only thing I can remember him being in is a bit part in Better Call Saul when the "have you noticed gum has gotten mintier lately" guy hires Mike.
>>
>>721352540
Probably because gaming in general appeals to the lowest common denominator, and when someone decides to check out what the fuss is about for themselves and ends up playing a game like Death Stranding, it’s pretty hard to convince them otherwise.
>>
I started Crime and Punishment but dropped it. I mean it's clear where it's going. He starts to unravel and you start to wonder if he can hold it together and get away with it, but I couldn't really bring myself to care whether he does or not, I suppose.

>Alec Guinness largely disliked Star Wars, viewing the dialogue as "lamentable" and the film as "fairy tale rubbish". He accepted the role for the money and thought the script was good enough to keep him reading, but he found the experience and fame associated with the blockbuster unfulfilling and even "displeasing". His disdain for the franchise was evident in his refusal to appear in The Phantom Menace and his comment to a young fan to never watch the movie again.

>his comment to a young fan to never watch the movie again
You should look up what he specifically said about that, he thought the kid's obsession was bordering madness, which it was. Watching any movie multiple times back to back is madness, clear autism right there, but this was back in the days where it wasn't well understood.

Star Wars wasn't high theatre, it wasn't intended to be, but it was what he would be best known for from then on. That's what he was digging at.

Common theme with actors who got role-pegged.
Especially with actual theater actors like they both were, who valued that sort of acting far more than what they did think of as the equivalent of being associated with MLP shit for the rest of their life.

Actors tend to have massive egos, so when they get these MASSIVE character roles that practically defines them to the general population to the point its a part of culture, they seethe. They see themselves as this multi-talented actor that has range but when 99% of the people who recognize you only know the stupid video game shit their ego gets crushed.
Some realize how fucking insane it is to be apart of peoples headspace like that and get humbled, some just stay forever mad.
Ego is a bitch, plus its probably annoying to be typecast as the wacky crazy guy every single calling. But fuck is he ever good at it

I once met a woman lecturer who thought the same thing
>once met a professor with a huge book collection, asked her who's her favourite author, she felt basic for saying Dostoyevsky, admired the professor for being well-read when he said that his favourite author is kurt vonnegut
Came so close to saying [bitch...] out loud. What's wrong with liking popular authors, games, movies when they truly are that good? You don't feel sophisticated enough? Also games will always be shittier than literature, gamedev crunch, the game being a product that needs to sell and not offend too many sensibilities and interactivity always make sure of that. Look at some random popular shit like The Witcher 3 - the antagonists absolutely suck in this game and the final act turns into stereotypical movie-game garbage, which they had to fix in the dlcs. TW2 is good but it's still on the level of good popular fantasy. Disco Elysium comes close but a) it's a visual novel in drag so not a "normal" game and b) it's still on the level of a funny pynchon-like book.

depends on what you are playing, i like immersive games where the interactivity of the medium gives you a unique experience to things like movies and books. Also puzzle games.
Though I still think books/oral storytelling are the best way to "experience" a story as you can use your imagination better, which allows you to fully imagine the experience in a way that is almost similar to a real experience. But the interactive medium has barely been explored because it was immediately corporatized, so theres so much left. Too bad VR flopped it had a real chance to provide even more immersion.

Anyway, go read a book faggots.

The way /v/ described this before I saw the webm was so much more disingenuous than it turned out to be, I thought he just brought up the book thing out of nowhere, and even then I defended it because who the fuck cares, nobody actually respects videogames, not even gamers, its a grown up toy.
But it just seems he brought up the book to explain to a retard that couldnt imagine why somebody wouldnt play a GTA game, let alone one of the GTA5 actor dudes or whatever

I think the GTA 5 campaign wasnt fun or kept me hooked and the online was fun for a few days because it was new.
Then I realized the mission rewards are intentionally made super shit so you farm forever or buy a shark card.
I think they made an unholy amount of money with shark cards and they are the primary reason GTA 6 still isn't out and why it will cost 80$ and not more.
Which is the only positive thing I'll get out of GTA 6 - the gaming industry and especially the journos will be seething but they still need to give it a 10/10.

That book in particular is pretty intelligent, though. Brings up some interesting points about whether or not anyone has the right to be a vigilante.

The way I see it, using the book as a way to signal yourself as "smart" is pretty fucking worthless if the point of it went over your head. The point of reading these things is to gain a deeper perspective of the human experience, not to go around jerking yourself off for being "smart" kek

I used to think that videogames would evolve to have engrossing, masterful storylines that would rival the likes of the past classics of literature and film. Now I don't. Vidya games seem to go the route of taking on the role of badass guy/woman/creature unstoppable slaughter machines. 95% of games revolve around defeating enemies, having a villain at the core to defeat. Standard cookie cutter dynamics of story. There are some games that take risks and try to do something with story/gameplay that has never been done before but most games boil down to the same formualic patterns.

The industry needs to evolve, devs need to step back and realize bolder decisions need to be made in terms of how these games are written, but they seem content to chase the same highs that just about every single video game has been designed around for the past 20-30 years.

I don't blame this guy for not giving a fuck about videogames. It's like devs only inspirations are high spectacle 80s and 90s action movies. Sure, that suits gameplay but it does fuck all for emotional response besides some adrenaline and excitement here and there.

As someone who's been in the hobby since 1994, it astounds me that the large majority of notable games revolve around slaughtering countless of thousands of enemy fodder. It's worn itself out so much.

if he wanted to be taken seriously as an actor after that all he had to do was google "Michael Hollick gta IV pay" to find out that this role was seriously not going to be worth it just to be typecasted as trevor for the rest of his career. the people who played these games are your audience, dude

I read through all the comments that came from this and there's no suggestion for a better author than Doestoevsky. The guy wrote timeless books about themes that everyone can relate to in an extremely accessible way. If we're going to confine ourselves to Russian lit, you've got very overwroght Tolstoy or pretentious Gogol or one-offs like Bulgakov (who you can't relate to without a deep understanding of contemporary life) or Nabakov (who is hated by both hebes and trads). It's not "intellectual" inasmuch as it's just "good". An actual intellectual choice would be Henry James or something. If you have no patience, try Notes From Underground.

On the same note, Annihilation is pretty good since it does two things most other books shy away from in that the protagonist is a bad person and it questions whether the majority of our 'concrete' scientific models are fundamentally flawed.
Retard most literature was also produced for the purpose of selling it to make money, while it suffers less due to usually being yoked to someone's singular vision it's still edited to be palatable to the masses. There are rare examples that are generally unliked, incomprehensible or have small followings that don't fall subject to that truth.
The fact that you think DIsco Elyisum is anything but total dogshit really tells everyone that you need to rethink your life.

I honestly have trouble enjoying lit as a hobby. Almost every novel is full of filler and half the time the author cooks up a dogshit ending that makes the whole thing feel like a waste of my time. I don't understand how lit is supposed to be so superior. It seems just as full of shit as any other medium.

Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer? You sound like you have good taste, anon-- I agree with you that the mystery would've been fucked if Roadside Picnic was any longer. But goddamn, the writing was so good.

I'm not a huge sci-fi reader (or reader in general for that matter) but I'd gladly take any suggestions on books that scratch the same itch as Roadside Picnic.

Not a book, but Darker Than Black has a zone called "Hell's Gate" where stuff like that happens. Just don't watch the second season.
It's anime, but the detail that really sells it for me is that When the "Gates" appeared all the stars changed, we lost contact with any satellites, and we lose contact with any probes sent to space.

Reading fictional books is low iq
>>
I'm reading The Brothers Karamazov right now. I find the way it's written a bit odd with the way it feels like the author occasionally addresses either the reader or the narrative itself, like in the bit I read today there was a part where it said 'I have already mentioned at the outset of my narrative how Grigory hated Adelaida...' and it's done in a way that pulls me out of it a bit. I feel like I'm getting pulled aside, away from the story, so the author can mention something to me directly when stuff like that happens. It can also feel rambly, but something I do like about it is that it's good at getting you to empathize with the characters in it, like the whole situation with the Elder Zomisa and Alyosha's devotion to him could come across as this alien-feeling religious zealotry, but the novel is good at making you understand why people feel the way they do about something like this rather than just declaring it, and it makes the characters feel fuller because of it. I'm still early into it but I'm mostly enjoying it even if it's not blowing me away or anything.

Anyway, Steven Ogg seems like a fag but GTA V is also kind of gay so maybe I'd be an annoying fag too if GTA fans were hassling me all the time. I don't feel he's really in a position to be so uppity though.

Lady Muarasaki does that pretty often in the Tale of Genji. I also found it to be a bit odd, if not anachronistic, but her writing style was supposedly pretty radical for the time, so it is what it is, I guess. I personally don't mind it very much and find that it can add a bit of levity to a book's content.
>>
>>721372716
>You’d be surprised how many hate games because they physically can’t play them without throwing a babby tantrum because “controls too hard”.

Why do people care so much? Is it insecurity? Like they read books and they just have to let other people know they read books because they want that "image"?

I've noticed book readers are usually the ones trying to place their hobbies above others, next to musicfags.

I like video games. I like books. I like some TV shows and anime. I like some movies. I like some outdoor stuff. I like studying religious history. And on and on it goes.

consolewarring is retarded but it's also retarded to claim all usages of free time are for dopamine
>>
>>721351976
I think that’s the point he was making, that it’s basic. If you’re really into a hobby you tend to explore the niches of said hobby and would be more interested in telling people about that. If all you can talk about is surface level knowledge you’re probably just trying to look more sophisticated than you actually are. The fact that the guy looks homeless and can’t even be bothered to groom himself doesn’t help either.
>>
>>721382453
>but it's also retarded to claim all usages of free time are for dopamine

>>
>>721382926
>But feeling superior to others just because you do X while someone else does Y is dumb.
yeah definitely. there's nothing wrong with saying you'd rather do x than y but you shouldn't obsess about how superior you are for choosing x over y and how anyone opting for y over x is a moron
it's so dumb to obsessively compare against other people like that

The last few times I’ve been in a situation where I’ve been asked “what games do you play” I haven’t gone out of my way to describe the game I’m actually playing because there’s no telling whether or not the person will actually care to hear details about something like Dread Delusion or Labyrinth of the Demon King, so I just default to Rocket League. The way I see it, if they haven’t even heard of Rocket League, then there’s no sense in me trying to discuss my hobby with them any further. Dostoyevsky, much like Rocket League, a litmus test for seeing if the person is worth engaging with further.

Kids reject reading cause the only books in the curriculum is fucking propaganda shit like Diary of Anne Frank, 1984, Mockingbird, etc etc

The only book that was actually enjoyable as a kid was Dahl books and those are now bad cause le man from his time is le racist.

That and Phantom Tollbooth but I think they dont have that in class anymore thanks to how redpilled the demons were

not buying it but enjoy your $90 and 200GB game

well its not really my cup of tea, but i keep forgetting it exists, whereas it feels like i knew everything about gta V just from keeping up generally with the news, maybe they just arent advertising as hard because they know theyre going to sell a decent amount on word of mouth alone

I mean sure he doesn't have an obligation to play nice to fans but he also doesn't have to be a fucking hypocritical asshole. The guy with the mic just said "I'll check it out" (as in the book) and Trevor said he would never play games. He tried making a point and fucking fell flat on his face. If he's such a book-reader, then maybe he should actually learn something from what he reads instead of just NPC-ing it. Fuck this guy, honestly.

I'm not. I had a lot of fun with GTA5 but that was only in MP with friends. We still play games nowadays but not quite as much as we used to a damn decade ago and I kind of doubt the whole crew will get back together for GTA6, assuming there's any interest at all.

The SP in GTA5 I started twice, once on PS3 and then on PC but never actually got into it enough to finish it. I also get a sinking feeling about GTA6 ending up woke shit, I hope that's not the case but it's also incredibly hard to imagine a big-budget project out of the West that's not DEI'd to hell and back.

I hate reading books but I love to research and memorize information about my hobbies which effectively makes me a living index and/or fun fact factory about a limited amount of topics, and people look at me like I'm weird for it or tell me it doesn't count and I'm still uncultured for not being interested in literature.

Fuck normalniggers man you can never keep them happy.

>Why do people care so much? Is it insecurity?
in this case it's a coping mechanism, trevor has been trying to escape people talking about gtav ever since it came out so he will literally bring up something to avoid talking about it as a "gotcha" moment to shut them up.

I write fiction, study languages (Japanese for work and animoo, Ancient Greek for autism reasons), and like learning about ancient history. I would like to get back into drawing, but I don't have the time at the moment.

He played a psychopathic asshole in the game, idk why anyone expected him to be anything other than just that in real life. He’s an actor— for all we know he did this on purpose to draw attention to himself.

That’s a pretty based quote. It actually describes the way I treat my “hobbies” as well, IRL. Even if I’m deluding myself into thinking what I’m doing is important, it sure as hell feels that way 99% of the time.

my hobby feels personally attacked in this thread so i will say that playing silksong is infinitely more engaging & worth your time than reading ANY book ever will be.
also trevor guy is salty as fuuuuuuck
