All people's complaints about live-service and sandbox games normalizing endless content-relevance cycles for games are fair, it's fine for a game to just naturally live out it's discussion cycle. but I will say, I feel like people used to talk about games a lot fucking longer than they do now. The life cycle of a game's cultural relevance used to be like 5 years not 6 months, people were making "cake is a lie" jokes in 2015 like they were still freshI think the issue is that things move so fast, and the internet is so big and ravenous now, that the small window of relevancy most games get is supercharged and by the end everyones burned out, the potential for content quickly totally spent instead of being more of a slow dripfeed. The prevalence of algorithm-based social media with endlessly scrolling timelines and a rat race of artists and youtubers trying to be hop on bandwagons necessitates way faster fan content output than back when everything was mediated by forums, image-boards, online gaming publications, even the odd site like tumblr, deviantart, and know-your-meme still kept things alive at a more manageable pace.Basically, at this point it feels like every release of a movie/streaming show season/video game/content update is treated as an event moreso than as art. theres almost no "sleeper hits" or "cult classics" anymore, there just isn't the space for the exploration and patience to find them. unless some popular youtuber makes a video essay about them, that is. then it gets a brief trend of relevance that is immediately forgotten just as easily as any other bit of online media because almost nobody has physical media anymore
