It's a shitty game with a highly flawed battle system and absurd difficulty spikes in the most random places but the difficulty is for all the wrong reasons. The story is nonsense and most of the characters aren't even likeable.

On the plus side it features a nearly naked loli catgirl who constantly throws herself at the main character because she likes licking him and wrapping her legs around his hips.
>>
The fan service was based, but the cutscene direction and model animations were slop.
>>
>>721381598
My wife Laura Bailey is in it, so it's based.
>>
I never had a reason to switch off the first set of characters you got. Welch, your weapon vendor etc is the highlight of the game and your protag loses his voice halfway through the story.
It's not bad, but the only thing I really remember was the thief enemies in the snow level that screamed 'I DON'T WANT TO DIE' as I chased them down.
>>
>>721381598
I want a remaster of 3
>>
>>721385142
They want you to forget about 3.
>>
>>721384898
Dubs are slop.
>>
>>721382492
Yet isn't this the one Star Ocean with no romance mechanics?
>>
>>721381598
Combat gets crazy at endgame with fast number spam. Story and cutscenes are whack in the best way but I always quit once you get to the medieval and worse girl shows up. The game was the first in the series to let you go all over space and time...just to end up back where all the other games take place.
>>
>>721385142
Exclusive to PS4
>>
>>721385943
TLH has relationship stuff. You can even lock yourself in your bunk with the kids.
>>
>>721381598
I was enjoying it until the alternate Earth AND fast travel being locked at end game so you have to use a very short dash constantly which makes a loud noise. The Bunnies are dogshit too. It's fucking SLOG SLOP.
>>
>>721381598
It's the only Star Ocean that I shut off after the beginning combat tutorial. Seemed convulted and meh but I'm a diehard 2 fanboy til the day I die so take that into account.
>>
>>721386509
Alternate earth is where my mood heavily soured on the game. It went from, "OH COOL 1950s NEVEDA AND AREA 51 IN MY WEEB GAME, CAN'T WAIT TO SEE SOME OF THAT COOL SHIT" to listening to Edge being a whiny little bitch and crashing out.
>>
>>721381598
4 has the best combat in the series.
>>
I sure love to spam X-Claw and Dragon Roar like an absolute maniac
>>
>>721381598
It's good in ways that make it fun and bad in ways that make it hilarious. It's a top 3 SO game which either says a lot about it or the rest of the series.
>>
I don't know who's the best character, but the loli cat absolutely wrecked every boss including the last boss with her crits.
>>
It's better than 5 & 6
>>
>>721381598
Best in series and they will never top 4's combat system which is really fucking sad. 5 felt like a simplified version of 4 and 3 was a sort of beta version in regards to combat, just felt very stuff
>>
>>721389667
>Stuff
Stiff damn it
>>
>>721381598
if you treat its story as a parody of its genre then its funny as hell

also, advanced physics
>>
>>721385142
Not happening because 3 unironically crippled the franchise. That's why every game they released after always takes place in the distant past so they don't have to deal with that twist. They even made fun of it in that short lived gacha.
>>
>>721389953
What's the twist?
>>
>>721390103
The entire Star Ocean universe is just a video game simulation or something like that.
>>
>>721390103
The entire setting is just an MMORPG
>>
>>721381598
Better than 5 and 6
>>
>>721390103
its the easiest way to see if someone got filtered. its like the food analogy of 'controversial' video game story twists
>>
>>721381598
Neither. It's a decent entry with some greatness and some cringe parts.
I appreciate how it tried its best with the enviroments too, which is something not usually mentioned. The fields were unusually soulful, especially Roak.
>>
>>721381598
slop i hate bugs and combat overall was meh, couldn't last for more than 20mins artstyle ain't working for me you either make game realistic or anime you can't have two clashing styles at same time
>>
>>721389953
>They even made fun of it in that short lived gacha.
Anamnesis actually confirmed 3 takes place in an AU. It took them a decade but they finally retconned it.
>>
Still hoping for a new star ocean with a bigger budget but i know squeenix only give it to ff and dq these days
>>
>>721390738
>only give it to ff
Not even that. They cannibalize FF's budget these days. XVI was entirely funded by the MMO.
>>
>>721390738
The most recent SO had a bigger budget and it didn't do so well from what I remember and it got pretty bad reviews. If the series isn't already dead(outside of milking remakes) it probably will be if the next one doesn't sell well.
>>
I liked 3 for the combat but could never get into 4. The attacks felt a lot less snappy and blindside was clunky as hell to actually use.
>>
>>721381598
based slop
>>
Faize crashing out was valid. im a sucker for the Thanos-type agenda. his heart was to big he wanted to save all life in the universe. " in the new universe life shall be one but also "all" no saddnes no pain no fear of death or loss of loved ones. going back and watching those final scenes. even though some parts are cringe i fuck with it. i fuck with the crash out when you wear your heart on your sleeve get ready for that darkness to fuck you good.

2 > 6 > 1 > 5 > 3 > 4

yes it sucks

Sloppa

>>721390103
It is literally just the simulation theory/Matrix, but video games. Retards took it as every event in every game being orchestrated by 4D beings and nothing ever mattered completely ignoring the fact the game telling us that they were very hands off with the denizens of the Eternal Sphere, that a good chunk of the staff believed they no longer had the right to interfere with their lives, and that they pretty much lost full control of the situation when symbology was discovered.

Also the game wasn't even super combat focused it was more akin to the Sims with war subplots .
>>
>>721396457
They could have left it to your imagination, but they had to go the extra mile and say that Belial caused SO1 and SO2's plots to keep the game interesting
>>
>>721381598
I feel like the series lost its soul starting with 4 and just became sci-fi Tales games at that point. Also why the fuck did Welch have purple hair in this one and this one only?
>>
>>721396841
I know he made characters with powerful parameters and set them loose, but did they ever confirm he caused the main conflicts in prior games?
>>
>>721397158
You're gonna have to explain what you mean by that. 4 establishes the soul of the series, which is that it's a Star Trek fanfiction with the whole game revolving around the creation of the UP3. Unless you mean gameplay, which still doesn't add up. SO has always been a spammy action game (which continues in 4) whereas Tales was more restrictive and focused on stringing combos. The line actually started blurring in the opposite direction with Arise, which has spammy combat and skill buttons that do different things depending on your positioning.
>>
>>721397564
They don't outright say it, but they say enough that it can't be referring to anything else. "Switched the homelands of certain people" has to be referring to Muah and "removed bugs in a certain time loop control program" has to be referring to the Wise Men breaking out of the Quadratic Sphere
>>
>>721381598
I wouldn't know I lost my fucking save.
>>
>>721381598
Funniest game I've ever played. It's a clear point where tri-Ace started to flounder with their products in the oddest of ways.

SO4 coming after 3 in an attempt to continue the series after that twist, first high definition Star Ocean game with quality environments whilst also having the models look insane. Most of their games during this era suffered some blatant uncanny valley whilst animating like anime sprite characters. They should've attempted to emulate Katsumi Enami's artstyle rather than realism.

Then the story, is fucking insane. The entire existence of the parallel world Earth got me fucked up. It's just a ride and I can't tell if it's good or not.

I can't even say what I feel about SO4, it's that odd. To answer your question, it's both based AND slop. Like most tri-Ace games.

Is this Star Ocean game good?

It is

>That's why every game they released after always takes place in the distant past so they don't have to deal with that twist
I never understood this notion that the series can't exist past 3. What does the twist change about Star Ocean universe that makes a new story impossible? The "issues" the twist caused are literally solved in the ending.
