Video games are better with this
>>721392457I do like playing platformers and stuff with an arcade stick. I think I'm trying to make up for my parents never buying me an NES advantage.
>>721392457Never bothered buying one, even after my local game center closed its doors. Keyboard does the job fairly well, but I'll probably never be allowed to attend events and tournaments with it unlike arcade stick.
I just want one that works with a Switch/S2 so I can play mechanically simple games without having to hold the controller.Everything I've found lacks an R3/L3, and that's kinda important sometimes.
>>721393363For fighting game tournaments? People play on whatever these days.
I use stick for shmups (I have several, for various consoles from retro to modern) but I use a regular controller for fightans.I also commissioned pic related solely for Catherine, Tetris, and other block puzzle games.
>>721394064If you have a Brook board-based stick it works with Switch 2. You can also add in more buttons.
>>721394343I used to use controller for shmup, and I think it actually might be more optimal technically, but your hands also start getting numb after however many hours of playing, depending on how ergonomic the controller is. With stick you can last a lot longer.
>>721393363>I'll probably never be allowed to attend events and tournamentsif you can make it work on a PS5 i don't think you'll have any issues.
>>721394109No. More specifically speedrunning and retro events. They usually only have original hardware. I use their own controllers instead, but my performance is really not the same compared to keyboard.
>>721392457The local arcade has a Touhou cab set up and it feels really good to play, but I'd rather use a controller at home, save these for fightan games
>>721394519>With stick you can last a lot longer. Not to mention, it is objectively quicker to tap-dodge in opposite directions (left-right-left-etc) with stick than with moving your thumb from one side of the D-pad to the other.
>>721395325Don't you just put your thumb in the center and roll it back and forth?
>>721392457nah
>>721395746I do, but micro-dodges are still easier with a stick. For me, at least.
Hahaha >>721392457Nice BO button sweaty NERDS
>>721392457>Mayflash
>>721398292Yeah, we know it's a budget entry-level stick, but at least it's not Razershit that dies in the middle of a important tournament.
>>721394343Custom Catherine controller is super gay but now I want one too. Did you go for that size and the six buttons just because it's more comfortable to rest your hands on? I can't think of any block games that need that many.
>>721399059Qanba Drone is much easier to recommend as an entry level stick.
>>721399167I got 6 buttons since:>grab block>release block>use item>undo (in single-player)>auto-climb (single-player; didn't use but wanted a button bound to it because autism)>check phone (single-player)The game does actually use the standard X/circle/triangle/square and two shoulder buttons.I went for that size since that's all I needed. The tilted WASD keys make for better ergonomics, much easier on the wrist.Having 6 buttons is also handy in case I ever decide to try using it for fighting games.Only the case was custom-ordered (3D printed), the rest-- the buttons and all the innards-- were acquired from FocusAttack, Paradise Arcade Shop, and buttons from eBay.
>>721399167Also, in case you're at all curious:
>>721392457is shit, >comes with square restrictor(the worts kind of restrictor) installed by default for no fucking reason, so the first thing you have to do is replace it with the octagonal and throw away the square one because you dont gonna use it again>have to buy the round restrictor(i like to play old fighting games) because only includes the square and octagonal, even when is a fucking ARCADE controler>have problems to get the left down corner input in fast input like quarter circle back in figthing games even with the octagonal restrictor that comes packed with the controller (so not is the round restrictor problem)>after a year of use the connection started to fail even when is a wired connection, start to play and the connection ramdomly disconnect and connect after a few minutes , i checked the cable and is all ok>buttons are noisyi was thinking to replace the stick with a sanwa because is compatible but after the connecion problem i don't know if i should, i like the additional features but if the controller is shity there is nothing to do about it
>>721399964>>721400260Thanks for the breakdown. It's been awhile since I played it. I doubt I'll ever spend the money on one but it's a cool idea to keep in mind.
I like the NES Advantage look of the 8bitdoodoo one better but I respect that the Mayflash F300 is cheaper and every bit as good
>>721404225Yeah, I only got it because I get really salty in puzzle games when I fuck up a directional input (example: Accidental diagonal and hard-drop in Tetris) and I wanted something where the only fault would be my own; wouldn't be able to blame it on a bad D-pad.It was also my first time wiring a controller, which I was pretty proud of. I had to disobey half of pic related because the way I wanted it wired (for a configuration that made sense to me in Catherine), so that was fun to figure out.Wouldn't recommend anything like this unless you're dead serious about taking the WASD pill for whatever genre. All in all, it cost about $180 to put together.
test
What's a good stick if I just want to play beat 'em ups, old arcade games, and platformers?
>>721404964Qanba Drone. Should still be able to find one for under $100.
>>721405064Alright, thanks anon!
Leverless is the future and the only ones clinging to sticks are sunk-cost grandpas
>>721392457Swap that for the 8bitdo one with sanwa parts swapped in.
>>721405317>sunk-cost grandpasI still occasionally hit up a nearby arcade (Galloping Ghost), and I honestly much prefer a lever. Leverless not only feels wrong to me, but even if I did "get it," it would make me sloppy when going back to a stick for shmups or at the arcade.
they are more fun and comfy when they design the game for themall they need is a dash button so you don't have repetitive stress from dashing with the stick
How would you map Cuphead on an arcade stick?
>>721406804Some newer fighting games have a dedicated dash command (combination of two buttons), much easier to pull off than double-tapping. Example: Melty Type Lumina.
>>721392457some are, almost all aren't
>>721392457Arcade sticks are antiquated technology, kinda like the Neogeo controller. You have a big dead zone for no reason. Leverless controllers and gamepads with analog sticks/dpads give you faster input
>>721399203carbon is closer to the price range of a mayflash, but it's still leagues better. mayflash sucks.
>>721392457this probablt sucks ass but I bought a mayflash f500 v2 and it fucking rules
>>721394343>hitboxYou didn't win the tournament
>>721408853Butterbox*And I did get into the semifinals at a Catherine tournament a few years back.
>>721398292>>721408651>Swap mayflash parts for sanwaWow its fixed. >>721399203Drone is like $40-ish more than an f300 and with that $40 you could have just bought better parts to throw into the f300, and thats if you even want to upgrade in the first place.
Won't need anything ever again
True, but with these guys that I can print out whenever I want. Have a bunch of pcbs left over as well.
>>721409215>bat top
Beat silksong 100% with picrel. In 2017 I beat hollow knight with my old madcatz TE. I love finding games to play with a stick.
>>721392457
>>721408648D-pads exist because you can't stick a lever on a handheld device like a Game and Watch and it was cheaper to make handheld 2D controllers with d-padswhen they were all bare minimum disposable plastic that needed to be a value add for the console. There's no reason to continue to insist on them now when arcade sticks fulfill their niche and controllers all follow compatible USB standards that are only arbitrarily enforced by console makers.
>>721410648I'm gonna be real, I fucking hate dpads. I played zeroranger mostly with a dpad and switch to an arcade stick near the endd and holy hell my fingers stopped hurting and I became even more precise. whoa. I have carpul tunnel too so sometimes I'll use the arcade stick for games that don't need a second analog stick because it is more comfortable a lot of the time. weirdly I remember playing sonic 2 on the genesis exclusively on an arcade stick. I don't know why I rambled so much. it's late. sup fags
>>721409785>>721410091>>721409284>>721395850For competitive fighting games these may be technically "better" but for shmups you'd be missing the point. You can play shmups on anything so the whole point of an arcade stick is that they're more fun. These are less fun.
I went ahead and bought a second one of these since I really don't play anything that needs 6 buttons and I love the form factor.
>>721413898I do admire the swerve of recreating the controller from the ground up.
>>721392457I have this one. The stock parts are fine but does anyone else's joystick bounce enough when you throw it upwards that it hits a down direction too? Probably doesn't matter at all since you're usually holding the stick and not throwing it that hard in-game anyway, but just wondering.
>>721414362It's really nice and I have used it from Fightcade to my Neo Geo and CPS2 units via Supergun and it performs very nice. I only bought the second one since it was a few dollars on sale now and just in case it suddenly discontinues.
shmup players, which do you prefer?
>>721416315i don't play shmups but i do play virtua fighter and i prefer right
>>721392457It's curious that Arcade Sticks have been phased out of competitive fighting games in favor of hitboxes because all button controllers are more optimal. I mean, no shit, sticks weren't designed to be optimal, they were designed to be fun and feel satisfying to use
>>721416921Zoomers have no connection to arcade sticks, is my guess.
>>721416943>ZoomersDaigo was one of the first dudes to pick up hitboxes waaaay back in the day
>>721392457i unironically need one for my MAME
Do I need more?
>>721416315first three bottom buttons with the fourth at the top.if you use a 8 button layout you will go to hell for being a non fundamental heretic (i'm joking, do whatever layout you want)
>>721392457I've been meaning to get one because I've started playing fightans at local arcades but all the execution I practice on pad is useless.
>>721416315
>>721417119fourth for the first button on the top row*
The shit you can pull with Terry is straight up cheating.
>>721392457quick question, does OP stick still works to this day?
>>721417364Yeah it doesStick and buttons are just slightly worse Sanwa clones, and they're honestly fine. Actual Sanwa parts are also extremely easy to install.
left sided orientation directionals when they are button based are confirmed tourists
I never used an arcade stick controller. How do you play with one of these? Do you just play at a desk / table where you can place this in front of you and have it at a good position while sitting? Or placed on something so you can play while standing, like a real arcade cabinet? Do you just have it on your knees while you sit in a chair if not? Is the latter uncomfortable / awkward?
>>721417775I play with it on my lap. It would probably be uncomfortable if you have one of the bigger ones, but something like the one in the OP would be fine. It's very comfy.
>>721417775Also btw standing at arcade cabs was an american thing. Japanese arcades usually have chairs
>>721417851Thanks, that sounds good. I'm interested in one for emulation (among which old arcade games) and I'd just be sitting as well when using it.
>>721401759are all spics so fucking stupid
>>721416921Meanwhile in the real world
Bitch please. I like this one more. Used to play many Namco games like Pac Man and freaking Rescue Shot.
>>721417137I'm autistic so I feel like if I did this, what if I went to a real Japanese arcade and didn't have the correct muscle memoryHaving the laser and shot buttons next to each other is objectively more comfortable though, as well as having bomb off to the side so you don't hit it accidentally
>>721417106Does this joystick even do 8 way movement, or is it just 360?
>>721423992360. It's almost a toy, but for the $15 I paid for it it's a good bit of fun.
I play fighting games with my keyboard on a WASD layout
>>721423545I can tell you having this weird finger spread is pretty uncomfortable at first. I don't understand how bomb in the middle stayed the standard.
>>721409215wow i have a strong desire to put that arcade stick in my ass
>>721394519Pad/kb is optimal for shmups because tap dodge precision
