>>721463557Original hardware. Playing with the console and the original controller is an essential part to fully enjoying the games.
>>721463557>brownmulationyikes!, original hardware always
>>721463557Neither. Im neurotypical and white so i buy collections and remasters, and when i cant i move on instead. Its not hard.
Emulation, but good.
>>721463893Not really. I wouldn't be able to deal with CRT today, no offense to those who like that shit. They make my eyes bleed and tired, everything is uncomfortably blurry like if I tried to look at things in the distance but I needed glasses, so my brain is trying to process it, hard to describe. I don't have this issue with modern screens only CRT.

>>721464894You forgot MiSTer in the highest tier.
emulation is easy and only turbofags obsess over one pixel being out of place for a single frameand it runs betterimagine freezing your games in the past due to some gay fetish
>>721463893Playing both on original hardware, emulating and playing ports and remasters I can confidently say that real hardware is a different experience. The games usually feel harder and somehow more immersive.
>>721463557>decay>replacing caps>sourcing unique part revisions>a whole tool shed to maintain hardware>a fucking oscilloscope just to calibrate lens>mastering a dozen crafts so you don't kill boards>new mod? hopefully the last one is reversibleit's all so tiresome. and expensive. I'm content with the pitfalls of emulation.except for the og xbox and xemu might still get there one day.
>>721465142I find it as appealing as my TVs settings menu.>>721465203You are more involved. There's less distraction, you have an actual set up you had to have some level of investment to get going, and using things like the original controllers instead of emulating with a 360 controller over USB you're given a more distinct experience. It really is the best way.

>>721465474Slavic utilitarian GUI design is pure kino.
>>721463557Original hardware with flashcart/hard drive. But emulation is a solid choice if people don't want to waste money or physical space on hardware. In the end no one cares, but online spergs.
>>721464427I get headache and red eyes if i watch new OLED TV etc for too long. No problems with CRT.
>>721465576I'll compromise. My SD2SNES is running a znes themed skin.
>>721465142MiSTer sits in the awkard spot where it has none of the appeal and charm of the original hardware but none of the convenience of emulation. Nobody cares about accuracy but speed trannies and even they don't speedtroon on MiSTer because it's not as accurate as it claims to be.
>>721465782does it snow though?
>>721465869>appeal and charm of the original hardwareWasting money?
>>721466094Requires too much power for the wimpy SNES to handle.
original hardware but modded or with a flashcarttrying to buy retro games in 2025 is cancer
>>721465387It's not that bad, if you stick to the popular consoles at least. The most common point of failure is the optical drive and you can get rid of that entirely with drive emulators and mods. Even if your console starts dying anything pre 6th gen is usually pretty easy to work on.Now if we're talking relatively rare and notoriously unreliable hardware like the Mega CD or 3DO it's a different story.
>>721463557Original if you can get it. Emulation is fine though
>>721465782Soul
>>721466112A used N64 + a clone everdrive is less than two new games on Steam. With the two games you get a you will own nothing license to play pozzed unopitimized UE5 slop. With the N64 you get a cool console and access to hundreds of hours of ludo kino.
>>721463893>>721463960>>721464894Yeah bro, Ocarina of Time should be played at 20 FPS with Vaseline textures, otherwise it's SOVLless or something.
i have a pc much stronger than any console and my phone can emulate everything prior to the switch and ps3why exactly should i give a shit more than slapping any generic controller onto my pc or getting a phone controller for those weaker games
>>721466776That's true, but a MiSTer can do the same and much more.

>>721464894Nigger tier is unironically the best way to play old games
>>721466809Looks and plays good on my 19" JVC CRT
>>721463557Emulation. While real hardware is fun to play around with, it's more for the enjoyment of the process than for enjoying the actual games. For me when I do bring out my old NES or PS1 once in a blue moon, it's more for playing childhood classics and stuff like that.If I want to actually enjoy the game as much as possible, I see no reason to not add on some modern rendering features, or improving the framerate with hacks or whatever. But obviously that varies a lot depending on the system. Like there is more or less no chance I will ever play a game on my PSP ever again when I can effortlessly play them in 1080p. I hated the jagged low resolution back in the day, and I still hate it today.
I need to offload all my real hardware, there's no point in owning anything up to ps1 anymore with mister.
>>721463557native ports
>>721463557Emulators because they run on computers, and computers are superior to consoles.
>>721467009It's easily the best investment one could make in retro gaming if you just want to play the games.
>>721463557is there a way to pimp og hardware other than replacing storage drive?
>>721467592Just because you got used to shit doesn't mean it isn't shit.
Depends. N64 is very much a system I have trouble playing unless it's original hardware, just because of the memories I have attached.Anything else though, I don't really care. As long as I can play it, i'm fine. But n64 I had like 300 games for, I was a rich little shithead, and emulation for n64 has NEVER been particularly good anyway.
>>721463557Emulation
>>721463557Emulator, archaic consoles cant compare to emulation
>>721467631>Like there is more or less no chance I will ever play a game on my PSP ever againIt's funny because it's the other way around for me, I emulated the PSP for the longest time and always found the visuals unappealing, the low resolution UI, the lower poly models, lower res textures, reduced geometry, I got a PSP 3000 at a garage sale and the 1:1 pixel mapping and smaller screen makes the graphics much more coherent. I love the form factor too, I miss when handhelds were actually portable and could fit in your pocket.
>>721467936No, that's a mid range PC, and you can actually use it for others task as a bonus.Hell, a shitty modern laptop can play up to PS1 at 720p just fine, so you probably don't need to spend a cent to play most retro games.
>>721463557I have the orignal hardware stashed in a closet but i still prefer Emulation. Its just more convenient opening up a Rom than having to plug in a device in to my CRT.
I got flashcarts, raspberry setups and an actual arcade board. The OG board on CRT just feels better.Maintenance on the board aint that bad, but im terrified for the day that CRT starts showing problems because that does not look easy to repair.
>>721463557Emulation just for convenience and performance.
>>721467992HDMI output. Also, screen mods for handhelds.

>>721464427A friend of mine had a nice CRT, I mean back when they were relatively current, and games looked incredible. I have never seen Resident Evil Remake look as good as it did on this television. But my family was poor as shit so I grew up on a 30 year old Admiral from my deceased grandmother and then later on a 19 inch Magnavox Value Deluxe or whatever. There is definitely a quality disparity between CRTs. It depends on the set.
>>721470939I repair consoles and controllers all the time, I know how to maintain the things I care about. Do you?
>>721466950https://github.com/fgsfdsfgs/perfect_darkBetter experience on what I already have.
>>721464894>original hardware with flash carts, ODEs or CFW played on a CRTI played on my modded Wii & PS2 through a VGA CRT monitor w/ component cables + a conversion box, and it's 480p output is awesome. However, I would immediately downgrade to composite if I could find an actual CRT TV.It's just too much of a hassle with all the wires compared to just using a CRT TV, but I haven't been able to find one in fucking years. None at thrift stores, flea markets, and whatnot. There aren't even any on Facebook marketplace. Anyone who has like 30 different Trinitrons behind them and goes "uh yeah it's not that hard to find CRTs actually" needs to fucking shoot themselves. I didn't know why I didn't care enough to grab one when people were handing them out like candy 10+ years ago.

>>721471168You're very stupid. Not only did you not post a console, you don't understand things can't be infinitely repaired. All you did was post 2 torn-off USB ports and a random board.
Emulation but only with nearest neighbor scaling.
>>721471575kek
Emulation because I don't give a shit and I'm not gonna shell out 2k dollars for some shitty retro games.
>>721464394Buy an ad.
>>721471350Is it playable from start to finish?
>>721472023But then you'd ignore it :(
I like to wear diapers and sit on the floor in front of the CRT tv to get the full retro experience.
>>721463557When possible, OG hardware with mod/hack/jailbroke (fuck physical). When is not possible, and emulation is decent (no artifacs or ground braking compromises needed to play) than emulation is fine.
>>721471667You don't maintain your own belongings then? I'm surprised and shocked. Conservation of what we already have is one of the most important things you can do. I can't imagine the filth you live in, crusted up keyboards and gunked up mice, dust filled PCs struggling to exhaust their heat. I pity you.
Emulation up to PSX, since that will run pretty mich all games perfectly playable. After that modded orginal hardware and a OSSC. I never liked how PS2 emulationf felt regarding input lag, and graphic glitches and Dolphin is cool, but still chucks when changing to scanner cockpit view in Rogue Squadron 2.
>>721473859Sony controllers are not worth preserving.
>>721474091They're more worth it than any PC, that's for sure.
>>721474480The controller so shitty it activates the triggers literally every time you put it down is not more worthy of preservation than even the lowest S3 Virge card.
>>721463557Both but I prefer OG hardware.
>>721463557For the atari up to the wii + arcade - emulation on a CRT.Anything beyond - hardware on a HDTV.
>>721475092>emulation on a CRT.Do you have vga to component on your computer or something? I'm about to try using my computer with a crt to see whether it's a meme or not
>>721464894What about emulation on a CRT? like a computer hooked up to it with emudriver or a fpgay
>>721463557Emulation. A decent Emulator is better than a console.
>>721475228NTA but I have an old computer hooked directly up to a CRT TV over component. Not a VGA CRT monitor but a TV. You just need a way to output the appropriate signal and custom drivers. pretty much any AMD GPU with VGA output is compatible. CRT emudriver. There's some other ways too but it works for me
Use what interests you. Hardware is great for nostalgia, collectors and the authentic feel. Emulation is great for convenience, cutting costs significantly and a more customizable experience. Just because I have Shinobi 3 for the Sega Genesis doesn't mean I shouldn't emulate it for what I consider my personal preferred experience, but everyone's going to be different. And the vast majority of people aren't gonna bother with setting up their own emulation anyway.Neither side of the equation is necessarily worse beyond setup and preservation.
>>721475478forgot to mention I do use a VGA to component converter. If you are autistic about lag you will notice a slight difference with emulation vs real hardware especially on gen 6+
>>721463557they're both shit for different reasons
>>721475593>>721475478Is a convertor even needed? I thought VGA outputs to component natively. How bad is the lag vs emulating on hdmi out to an lcd or something?
>>721463557OoT runs like shit on N64 hardware. 240p 20 FPS. It’s unplayable without emulators.
>>721476147It's a garbage game in all forms
>>721476231Explain.
>>721464394holy based
>>721463557Original hardware. Always always.
>>721475872The lag from the display is 0 just like a real hardware setup. I don't think a VGA to component converter adds lag and I can't tell the difference from real hardware. VGA outputs RGB color signal but component has to use YPbPr. It's kinda confusing because VGA is technically a type of component video. But when people say component they mean the signal is based on YPbPr which uses the 3 different colored RCA connectors. VGA is a type of RGB signal like SCART. But VGA will be double the max frequency of a normal CRT TV and is made for a CRT monitor. CRT monitors have a minimum of 31kHz and CRT TVs are half that are 15kHz. That's why you need a custom driver or specific setup to get a 15kHz signal out of VGA which is meant for double that.
>>721466809Aren't you OOT fags constantly saying it's the best game ever made? What's the matter with playing it how it was released as the best game ever made?
>>721463557Single-Purpose Device
>>721463557>OG hardwareacceptable>emulationacceptable>remaster/emulation with 4K TEXTURES that make the game look like AI sllophow could you
>>721463557Depends on the console. PS1 and below are good for emulation as already stated in this thread but stuff like ds/3ds just feels like ass emulated. In those cases nothing comes close to real hardware and both those consoles are easy as fuck to jailbreak so it is only matter of finding one unit that's still on good condition and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
>>721477315Why can't the greatest game ever be improved? There's no ceiling here.
>>721463557Emulation I don't give a fuck if it "doesn't look as good" as a CRT, it looks fine enough to me. I might slap a filter on it but that's it. I love the convenience of downloading any game I wish, and being able to transfer games and saves to all the devices I own.
>>721463960Unless you bought all the original hardware back when it was new, you're touching a used console permanently stained by brown hands. Whites don't sell their consoles for a quick buck.
>>721463557I just feel like anything involving disk based mediums are a bad investment. I have a genesis model 1 and a model 2, a Playstation 2 fat, and a slim PS2. I'm in the process of selling pretty much everything after it's all cleaned, lubricated or refurbished. It's a fun hobby, but the most I'd ever do at this point is get a flashcart for the genesis consoles. I want to learn soldering, but I work all the time and don't know if I can do it at 37 without pushing other hobbies out the window. When it comes down to it, I just don't actually have much time to emulate or even play, but I like the maintenance aspect of everything more often these days.In a perfect world, all this stuff would be great to authentically play or whatever. I settle for emulation and retrotink 5x pro for everything else.
>>721463557Depends on the hardware. 6th gen and above? I buy it and mod it or buy it pre-modded and fully loaded.
