I decided to play a 2D Mario game for the first time and picked this one. It's hard as fuck. what the hell? Thought these were casual games for kids
>>
why is yoshi looking at me like that

Old Mario games are hard. Completing the original Super Mario Bros. without skipping levels is more difficult than most Souls games.
>>
kids back then were powerfull

What are you stuck on?

Next thread from OP:

Yellow Switch Palace
>>
>>721471302
SMW is a lot harder than any modern mario game so OP is valid. He's still a faggot though.
>>
>>721470670
>hard as fuck
Now try Donkey Kong Country
>>
>>721470670
I unironically hate all of Vanilla Dome.
>>

>SMW is a lot harder than any modern mario game
You're not wrong but the only part of the game I ever struggle with is the skewer palace. If OP were talking about SMB1 or SMB3 I'd understand since those games can get pretty hard towards the end, but Mario World just isn't a difficult game.

I'm ashamed that you had me going for a second, OP. I was seriously puzzling out how anyone could struggle with the most entry-level casual entry of the classic Marios.
>>
>>721470670
Mario 3 is way harder in my opinion which is why I don’t like it.
>>
I love platformers like Mario World and Donkey Kong Country but I'm horrible at that. I use cheats for power ups if a level is kicking my ass. Some of the levels in SMB1 are brutal.
>>
>>721470670
I cut my teeth on that game as le young gamer.
>>
>>721471327
Not really stuck just noticing the challenge, I've only played about an hour and have been dying a lot. Got to donut plains.
>>
>>721471406
>>721470670
I can see calling smb1 hard but world is more "average". I don't 'never die' but it's not much of a big deal if it happens. You need to find the secret level with free lives n powerups trick, if OP hasn't.
>>
>>721470670
Where are you getting stuck?

>>721472906
Ah, I see. You're just getting used to it. And I actually mean that. A lot of us that grew up with games like that overlook the fact that our brains were trained on it constantly over the course of many similar games. You're new to it, so it'll just take you a while to develop the sense for it that we all did. Keep at it, basically

More like played a videogame for the first time. SMW is super easy.
>>
>>721471675
Choco island/ and Bowser's ship are the hardest parts for me. I also get lost in lost lost woods, but never usually die on those levels.
>>
>>721471267
True but one of the better ones.
>>
Just remember when you get to the forest of illusion, you need to find a secret exit to progress.
Same with one of the ghost houses IIRC.
>>
>>721470670
Kirby games were literally made behind the design philosophy that kids who found 90s platformers too hard will have an easier option. That should give you the general idea of how hard the average platformer was back then.

They were made for kids, but kids had far more free time due to how primitive and expensive the internet was back then.
>>
>>721470670
wait till you get to the special zone implying you get that far.

Mario and even nintendo games were harder until somewhere during the wii era where CHADtendo turned into SHITSOItendo and made their games all braindead easy baby shit with the mario mandate

seriously mario sunshine, F Zero GX, even pikmin 2 were all challenging games even during the gamecube but the gamecube was a failure so shitendo pushed for casual slop for manchildren and succeeded

have fun with the game anon. Play all pre 2009 CHADtendo games, they are actually really good unlike the shitch dark days we are in
>>
>>721473397
Any techniques or tricks I should know about? I'm playing the 3DS VC version.
>>721474867
What exactly is a secret exit? Just the areas through pipes? I don't know the terminology.
>>721475495
I was thinking of trying a Kirby game as well, definitely will after this.
>>721475756
Special as in special ed?

>Special as in special ed?
He's referring to the Special Zone, it's entirely optional and has the hardest levels in the game. You access it once you beat all the levels in Star Road.
>>
>>721470670
you don't have to beat the whole game in one sitting hence it's piss easy
>>
>>721477159
Thanks. I actually had Sunshine on gamecube growing up and I did beat it. It was a very long time ago and I remember little of how it felt to play the game, but it was different than this I'm sure
>>
>>721477297
Red dots on the map have two different exits. Goalposts and keys
>>
>>721470670
>Thought these were casual games for kids

For 1992 kids. Not 2025 brain-rot era's.
>>
>>721471395

Games then came with the expectation that they’d be the entertainment for an entire summer or more. Cranking up the difficulty is a good way to keep the kids playing more. I’m sure if you asked some older folks who played SMB1 or 2 when it released, they probably never reached the end
>>
>>721478447
You have the causation backwards. If they made games as hard as the NES or even just SNES eras 2025 kids wouldn't be as dumb as they are. But every single media babies them and treats them as morons so they become morons.
>>
World can be difficult due to becoming small after 1 hit unlike the other Mario games. You also don't get to save until you beat fortress or switch palace if I remember correctly. It's an easy game but harder than later Mario games.
>>
>>721470670
nice story you made up
>>
>>721470670
I always thought world was a lot easier than 3. 3 was very tough for what was supposedly a child's game.
>>
>>721470749
You know why.
>>
>>721471394
bump for op to find cape
>>
>>721479156
Exactly this. Back then you might get one or two games a year if you were lucky, so they'd make them hard as hell just to keep you busy. It was less "beat the game" and more "live with the game for months while slowly figuring it out." No internet, no guides (unless you had Nintendo Power or some shady GamePro tips), just raw trial and error. Pretty sure half the playground rumors about warps and secrets came from kids never seeing the last few levels lmao.
>>
Having a zoomer nephew try Mario games is the most blackpilling shit. These kids get absolutely mogged by the most basic Nintendo level design. They completely lack the ability to explore or think outside of the box or actually learn platforming mechanics. Within minutes the zoomer kid will be begging unc to beat level 2-3 for them. It's just sad.

Unironically in the 21st century, Nintendo no longer makes games for children in this century. They make games for children of the 20th century ie manchildren. Because at least manchildren can actually beat games that arent Fortnite, Roblox and Rust.
>>
Mario World is easier to stack power ups in which makes it a lot easier. The game is a lot easier than Mario 3 until the special world with the wacky stages.
>>
>>721470670
you screwed up and played the hardest game in the series. you should be playing yoshi's island instead, it's much easier
>>
>>721479156
Pretty much.

Those old Mario games were generally pretty damn challenging.
>>
>>721470670
That is a casual game for kids. I completed it when I was nine years old.
>>
>>721475495
Honestly Kirby Dream Land on extra mode was harder than Mario World. Not counting special world, anyway.
