>>721477187>Nostalgia so true. Modern hits like Avowed and Concord are totally at the level of Morrowind and Team Fortress

>>721477798>>721477938Boomers and Millennials are right.>t.x
>>721477938Millennial and zoomers are more similar than they are to boomers, your opinion is irrelevant
>>721477187No, they genuinely were better made at least the actual good and even mid-level games. You can play Tengo Project's stuff and still get that same feeling. Modern gaming is slop designed by committee with 20 different sub-studios that have no communication and half of it is farmed out to jeets as well and all of it is trying to be movies.>>721477798And they're wrong. The 1990s through the mid-2000s is basically the peak of childhood history.
>>721477904What game?
>>721477187Games were made for Whites and Asians in the 90's. If you find yourself repulsed by modern gaming then that's a good thing, it's a sign of humanity.
>>721477187Everything has an era where it reached its peak. Late 80s to early 2000s was probably the golden age of vidya. So its not a matter of being blinded by nostalgia.
>>721477673Quite the contrary. Every known record is being broken.
>>721478364Not him but, I wanted to play ocarina of time and majoras mask since forever because I liked how they looked but never had a n64. I made a good pc recently, and finally emulated them. Guess what? They are both in my top20
>>721477187Okay now judge all your own favorite games and media using that point of view. Nothing you like is good on its own merits, you're just a child.
>>721477520> 'pick me' simpstop trying to impress millennials. they won't fuck u
>>721477798I dont give a fuck what boomers say. They got to experience a booming economy back then while the majority of us were still in diapers or havent even been born yet. Besides according to the matrix, civilization peaked in 1999.

>>721477187The answer is economics and the passage of time. Nobody is going to invest millions of dollars on making a PSX-scale game anymore. No team is going to build up the seniority required to do it well anymore. There's only overextended AAA slop that can't afford to be risky or creative because of the massive production budget, and whatever indies can afford to produce alone in their basements. Everything in between is dead.

>>721479872holy slop
>>721480401Hang yourself
>>721477187I'll give an answer from a non-nostalgic perspective. Older games respected your time. You just booted up the game and start playing. New games are like 100GB and have all these DLCs, microtransactions, multiple unskippable cutscenes, some movie-style plotline, a giant open world, its too much and as an adult you dont have time for it. I believe this is also why modern indie games are so popular nowadays, cause they respect your time and you can be done with it within an hour.
>>721477187I just played and beat Aladdin on the SNES for the first time a couple days ago. Even a half-baked movie tie-in from the early 90s is better than a grand majority of new releases. That's the state of modern games.Anyway this thread is just gonna be mostly pointless shitflinging, so should I try out the Genesis version too? I've seen people say it's better because Aladdin has a sword but the SNES game was plenty fun.

I've been having lots of fun lately going through some old Sega stuff I've never played before (Mega Drive and Saturn) and realised I just don't care about new games anymore. I haven't even been interested in a new game in years at this point, guess I'm not the target audience anymore. But that's fine since I can just play some retro stuff and have fun instead. I only really come to /v/ out of habit at this point, and also because /vr/ is so slow.
There are some games that are made today that are great fun but aren't getting enough attention for gaymers. I'm thinking about Speed Freeks.

Meh. Over the past few years, I've replayed old games I grew up with as a kid and I've played brand new games. I've both liked and disliked games from both categories.
>>721486210Sonic 2 is designed a lot worse than 3&K in a lot of places but 3&K's level design is just top notch in every regard.I think I understand what you mean because in Sonic 1 you could NOT just complete any stage by taking the "worst" (lowest) path and just holding right. 2 & 3 kinda loosened that a bit by making the fuckup path relatively easy on most stages, but the core 2D Sonic appeal of performing better to get to higher, more skillful paths and especially finding hidden rings is at its best in 3K, nothing in Sonic 1 could even come close
>>721477334This but Dark Souls
>>721486460>boss designHaha, good one.
>>721486542The level design is just ass. Going fast is inherently fun because everything is a blur and it's pure memorization because you can't see anything before it hits you. Sonic 2 and 3 have numerous instances where they set you up to go fast then set stupid trollshit gotcha crap in your path. Majority of the game is just going through these superficial spectacle paths where you watch the game play itself, but you better hurry back to the controller when it's your turn to play because they just shoved some bullshit in front of you that you need to instantly react to. It's just not fun at all and they completely missed the point. Also 1 has much better artwork and soundtrack.
>>721486460>Bloodlines is miles better than Rondo and CV3Anon I could maybe hear an argument of Bloodlines vs Rondo because they're such radically different kinds of games that you just happen to prefer one toBut come the fuck on man be realCV3 is one of the tightest games ever put together and it was on the fuckin NES

>>721477187Yeah I think the PS1 is nostalgia, games were more primitive then. it's only really PC games of that era that still hold up on their own. But 6th gen it is not the case. The PS2 saw much bigger and more ambitious games.
>>721485905>Luigi's Mansion>Advance WarsEarly 2000s Nintendo is fucking garbage and it only gets talked up by people who were in elementary school at the time or were too poor for an actual PS2 or even an Xbox. The Gamecube is one of the shittiest consoles ever made and while the GBA is good it's not because of Nintendo's games.
I will not ever entertain the idea that ps2 era action-platformers were good
>>721487135You need a high baseline speed to do these sections, because they are pipes and corkscrews, which is why it has the spindash, so you can never get locked out. Or it's just outright waiting for environmental pieces to move you on like tubes, or springs that slowly wind up. The inclusion of the spindash is the crux of these issues, as you no longer naturally need to gain speed and control yourself organically, you just spindash to proceed with the rube goldberg machine. The alternate paths also makes the levels very forgettable and feel almost randomly generated. And again, the trollshit level design is pervasive EVERYWHERE, you are constantly getting jolted through then having to slow down to a crawl because they want you to go fast but also want to troll the shit out of you by forcing you to memorize exactly where you must slow to a crawl to avoid some trollshit trap. It's just not fun, I don't need to explain it. If the game is boring as fuck to play, I'm not going to bother. I beat Sonic 1 with no continues, I had zero desire to even finish Sonic 2 and 3 and each minute spent with them was excruciating boredom.

>>721487626I agree with that. I don't think any compares to the original look of Spyro. Remaster/remake messed it up. Therefore it did a disservice to displaying the game's basic art direction. It's strange how a Spyro fan indie game somehow managed to replicate this exact idea. Yet the one's in charge of touching the official game screwed it up.
>>721488209>oh wow I like things more that I experienced during my youth than the things I didn'tcrazy
>>721487626>The PS1 era had a lot of little games with experimental styles and aesthetics and that hit really hard with a lot of people even to this day.I think that also explains why the 16-bit era up through the mid-2000s was so good. The consoles, arcades, PCs, etc. were powerful enough compared to old games where they could do more which led to enthusiasm, wanting to see what ideas could be done and push the technology forward. Put it wasn't so powerful that they could just do anything with little thought. Gaming creativity really died out after the PS2 era and everything now being made in the same engine (unless it's Capcom which somehow uses an even worse one with ugly visuals) just means everything has become the same. There's nothing to really advance anymore and teams are way too big and disconnected to allow the same level of creativity.
>>721477187Then why did I play through all of the Mega Man Legends series last year and fucking adore it while most of modern dogshit just makes me doze off? I'd only ever played the original Legends as a kid, but I played the other two last year as well and loved the shit out of them.
>>721488206No. And it wasn't great at the time either. It is easily bested by most the came before it and most that has come since. How it is so highly regarded should be relegated to a case study of mass hypnosis.
>>721488332Leave, then.
>>721478042This. The whole period from the 60s until early 00s was amazing for kids or young people, that's a huge period, even a life's worth of advancements and quality media creation
>>721478364Thirding or fourthing Deus ExPlayed it for the first time last year and it was amazing.
>>721488415Even from the title screen alone you can tell this game is fucking magical and soulful in a way that no game ever was and no game ever will be againhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2wzMZzdNJA

>>721488471I'm not saying it's bad. I'm saying it's grotesquely overrated.
>>721483129>wasteland 3I've never heard anyone play this, did this sell even a thousand copies? Same with tyranny. I dunno how they get their money back since they're not crowdfunded unlike original pillars and wasteland 2, but I'm glad they can manage .
>>721477187I played swat 4 a year ago and it was so fucking good. Baldur's gate 2 was also insanely good.
>>721486963>Bloodlines controls like butter, elegant and effortless but with the challenge to match.Come on now anon, this is just most video games. I do agree Bloodlines has one of if not the best whip controls, but it has the exact same jumping controls as the NES games. The latter is clearly restrictive on purpose. Not that the controls would make up for my issues with the game's gimmicky set pieces and boss designs, but anyway.
>>721488253Zoomoids like yourself hate millennials because we grew up in an actual real world while you grew up in an iPad hellscape being groomed by pedos on Minecraft.
>>721488867Are you trolling or do you not even realize that each character has their own jumping mechanics and physics
>>721483129>voice of cardsunironically kill yourself
>>721480903I crossed out every game on your list that was either a direct sequel, a numbered series or a remake. Obviously some are missing or could be debated, but there is a steep increase in sequels, remakes and rehashes after 2000. Towards 2005 we go full into sequel spamming and even some full-on remakes. Nowadays, a majority of the AAA games that get released are remakes and remasters. It's groundbreaking for an iterative sequel to be made. This is what I think the main difference is. There is nothing new anymore. Even GOTY of this current era, Baldur's Gate 3, is a numbered iteration with old concepts.
>Wanted to compare old games with their new counterparts>The "new" counterpart came out 10+ years agoModern game dev was a mistake.
>>721488868>millennials grew up with Minecraft and iPadsWhat the fuck are you smoking, Aidyn? Did someone get your pronouns wrong today?
>>721487517>The inclusion of the spindash is the crux of these issuesThen don't use it, you don't have to outside of those things that can grab you in Mushroom Hill.

>>721488913>physicsThey literally don't, though. They have different attacks available on the ground and in mid-air but they jump the exact same way - like in the NES games. I don't think John's whip swinging and Eric's pole vault move count as regular jumping.
>>721489326>they jump like in the NES gamesno the fuck they don't, stop spouting bullshit retard
>>721477187>The answer is nostalgia. The answer is mourning, because - creatively, in Western society - history has effectively ended. We're stuck in old genres, old media, old ways of expression. There hasn't been anything truly new for decades now. Constant remakes, constant slop. Constant "homages". Creativity has been so commodified that people feel like history has effectively ended. People live in the past because new forms of expression aren't arising anymore, for whatever reason. Loathe it or not, you could point to AI as being somewhat novel, but when you really look at it, it's little more than a means to hyper-effectively reorganise media. It can't create anything truly new.
>>721489068You were warned plenty in gen 7 that graphicwhoring was a bad thing but you didn't listen.
>>721489936Real niggas knew consoles were dead back then and all you needed was a PC + DS or DS emulator
>>721489563Uh I just tested it for a couple minutes and yes they do. You can do either a standing or a moving jump with no mid-air control. They also drop straight down of off platforms.
>>721490078Real niggas knew gaming was dead if graphicwhore became a thing, specially on consoles. As for consoles there was Wii giving the options and delivering a better approach to gaming but the consumer was too stupid + normie influx in droves
OR is it?
>>721478364Thief 1, 2, Deadly Shadows (stretching with this one) Splinter Cell 1, Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos TheoryWe haven't made real stealth games since early 2000s, except for HM. It's a fact we stopped making stealth games. But sound focused and shadow intensity based stealth was the peak of design. Levels built around manipulating light sources and sound in general. Why was that abandoned? it was a better concept. Now we have some very basic zero depth & shallow tacked on mechanics in open world games, but we've never had real hardcore stealth since the 90s and early 2000s. Commandos is a different idea, much like HM. Screw it, Hitman Contracts, Hitman Bloodmoney. Yeah I liked older HM more too. Although it's harder to explain other than I just liked their levels.
>>721490124And it feels great, the NES ones don't. I don't know how else to put it.
>>721477187it's not always nostalgia, sometimes things were more handcrafted, artistic, aesthetically significant, leading to inspiration, elevation through beauty. Feel like a lot of games these days are function over form. That function being keep the player addicted and extract as much money from him as possible.

>>721490389>>721490460anyway I would suggest anons to play older games for unmatched aesthetics https://youtu.be/hBNW9sQABdk
>>721488206As a Zoomie who played it for the first time recently, I thought it was great. Sure, the open world is tiny by today's standards, but the dungeons were pretty fun, even the infamous Water Temple (although I did have the luxury of being able to assign the iron boots to a C button, so that helped).Greatest game of all time™? Not really.Still a fun experience? Definitively.
>>721490668>Greatest game of all time™? Not really. Then what is?
>>721490552OP probably got on the Jannies' bad side for something unrelated and this is their punishment.
>>721490768IDK.I don't really rank my games anything more complex than "Kino", "Great", "Mid", "So bad it's good" and "Dogshit".
