The shittiest era for video games beyond a doubt, will things ever get this bad again?

Maybe, but definitely not in the same way. It was one of the most uniformly gritty, brown, ugly eras of video gaming we've ever seen. With a handful of stand-out exceptions, in hindsight it was an era where everything kind of had the look and feel of a B game. Nobody is going back to all of the console FPS games that defined the era--especially not on a console, not with a controller. All of the best 360 games you can play somewhere else, and the PS3 has like, an N64-sized library of really good games you can play for it. Which is nice in a way--when you've only got to worry about a dozen or so games, it's not exactly daunting. The bad news though is that I don't think PS3 emulation is going to be really rock-solid anytime soon. PS2 emulation, for as far as it has come, is way less than perfect. The PS3 being especially weird won't help matters. Too bad Sony is the only platform holder in video games that doesn't give a flying fuck about their back catalog. Xbox has way less of a history to celebrate than Sony and they've done far better in keeping their old games available in some way. I just wanna play fucking Trash Panic bros. and MGS4, but that's not far off.

The PS5 doesn't do anything special but at least it's lightning quick and is basically a better PS4. The PS3 was easily the worst console Sony ever made, strictly in hardware terms.
this was the last generation with SOVL. it started to go downhill towards the end of the gen and then the rot had fully set in by gen 8the ps3 is extremely sovl just by virtue of even the late models being able to play most ps2 games and all ps1 games and the early versions having full hardware backwards compatibility
it was bad but taking a normal shit is better than having diarrhea atleast.
What the fuck are you talking about, PS4, Xbone, PS5 and XSX are all far, FAR worse than those. Sure the PS360 was the beginning of the decline which continues to this day, but it was just that. It caught the beginning, every PS and Xbox after those has been in full on console video game decline era right from its very release.

The fact that they started a PS2 classics line in the PlayStation Store? They dropped full backwards compat as soon as the first wave of PS3s were out the door. You could play through the most notable games of the entire generation in a single season, the rest of it was wack-ass shit like Dark Void and Dark Sector and Call of Duty. Otherwise it was like, Gears, BioShit, UnFarted, The Ass of Crust. And then like Mass Effect, which is a goated series but only if you're between the ages of 31 and 35. There's a reason nobody gives a fuck about those games only a little after a decade later, and the fact that the series was kamikaze'd is only part of the answer. and I mean, I get it--sometimes I get nostalgic for John Woo Presents: Stranglehold too. Tragically it is not a good game.
Aside from introducing that awful achievement trophy bullshit and soulslop I think 7th gen is pretty solid.

When that failed for them, they didn't want to end up like Sega, so they focused on making unique hardware with games that were made for that hardware. Nintendo will never stop making hardware because they see video games as toys and the hardware is their lifeblood. Plus, in terms of PC gaming, Valve had to save it with the Steam Deck because the future of that is expensive GPUs most will be locked out of. The future of console and PC gaming are gaming handhelds but that's going to be reduced to just Nintendo and Valve making them.
