Gotta admit the game really falls off in act 2. The beginning of act 2 isn’t bad, but wow it just becomes tedious platforming and bs secrets with about zero story or lore to keep you hooked. Tons of areas in act 2 are just giant platforming sections with little reward, and again, nothing else to keep you interested. After finishing bilewater I wanted to take a break from the game, but didn’t. So I finished getting to lace and grandmother silk and holy shit I’ll beat grandmother silk tomorrow but really not pleased with the second half of this game. Silksong has several things over og hollow knight, but it’s so drawn out and empty. I remember the story of HK was a mystery for quite awhile, but in the end it was a succinct cohesive story. Silksong is not succinct, and the story doesn't deserve a map this big.

That's the problem with it trying to tell a story while being so open ended. If you just rush the main story objectives, Lace suddenly becomes much more present as a character. I wouldn't call it broken OP compared to what Architect can pull off with plasmium overdose, poison tool spam, or Wanderer's dps. It's just a cool damage burst for people who can play patiently and heal when they see an opening or a stagger. And please, don't mind what my headcannon tierlist for favourite tools is. I rate tools only for their usefulness and how fun it is to use them. For example the zap stake is my number 1.

Try it for more than 5 minutes and you will see Witch's bind is unreliable to say the least. You play it with multibind? There will be examples where the mirror's first burst kill the mobs and you won't heal with the tentacles, or one of the tentacle hits will knockback the mob away if it survives, losing heal restored and damage in the process. Witch is great on paper, kinda bad in practice, which is sad because it has the best nail moveset in the game imo.

Im trying to route my steel soul attempt
Im gonna follow the current speedrun route to skip sister splinter and moorwing (speedrun kill it but i will save 5 fleas instead)
Then i will purchase the fractured mask and gather 1 extra mask before doing mist and phantom
Then i will farm another mask on the citadel, 2 spools and the cogfly
Go back and get poison and the 2nd upgrade to th nail
Skip the third upgrade so i dont have to do sands and lugoli
Currently debating on getting double jump, quitting out i think that Mt Fae is free, but i might be wrong
Anyhow thats the idea, heading to lace 2 and GMS with 7 masks + fractured and poison cogflies
I need to give it further thought to the possibility or getting an 8th mask without too much trouble

I did it fairly easily going through the mist and organ, but other anons swear by the "regular" route
Just be careful not to bonk your head when sprinting with the anklets against the levers and ledges, that costed me a run or two.
Also it might help if you open a full map and color code the route by danger, there are a lot of rooms that is just running w/o any enemies, mastering the route will help save seconds on each room

Double jump is worth it and I think at the stage where you're doing steel soul you'll find Mt Fay a breeze.
The High Halls gauntlet is the main thing you'll want to prep for which is why I spent the extra couple of minutes in Sinner's Road to get tacks. If you get double jump immediately after clawline, you can also disable the silk stealing ghosts for the gauntlet.
Also don't forget the tool damage upgrades. They make a pretty huge difference although they're all from shops, which might mean a little rosary farming

I've just got the High Halls gauntlet and final boss to do before I beat the game for the first time, seemingly. I have the double jump, 8 masks, and I've been everywhere, done every quest I can find, and I'm about to get my second-last nail upgrade, just have to deliver the rasher.

If I didn't already know about a bunch of stuff from these threads, I'd say I'm around 95% finished. I've scoured the map screen and cleaned up every loose end I can find. I've done Sands of Karak and all I got was this Conchcutter. For a whole unique area's worth of effort, it must be a really good prize right?

Everything else must be hidden behind secret walls I haven't found. I know about Bilewater and the Putrefied Ducts, and there are a few crests and spells I don't have yet, plus a bunch of charms. Unless Act 3 suddenly opens up a bunch of new areas and upgrades that I didn't have access to before, I'm at a loss bc it feels like I've missed a whole bunch of stuff.

Big hammer crest sounds perfect for a tanky kinetic build - maybe even slows you a bit but turns every swing into a screen-shaking quake. I’d love if it had some momentum carry too, like if you full-charge while dashing, the swing becomes a shockwave that knocks enemies down.

And detonation marks? Kino. Absolute kino. Imagine laying silk tripwires across a boss arena and baiting the bastard through them mid-fight like some bug-ass Home Alone traplord. Could even combo it with a crest that lets you trigger detonations mid-air or while parrying.

I love it but I can see how people can bounce off it. I'm trying to think how I could prevent my own game from getting so boring like this and I think what it needs is:
-Every save point should also be a warp point and warping needs be a much faster animation with less bullshit involved.
-Removal of sidequests that have you backtracking through areas you've already explored like 3 times before to remove tedium.
-Removal of the need to travel just to hand in items like the artifacts you get currency in return for (although solution 1 would basically already solve the tedium here)

The most obvious examples are silk arts and tools. Healing just costs way too much compared to spells. The instant you prioritize healing, which is what you WILL be doing on your blind run because you don't know the movesets yet, you stop casting. Silk arts only really shine when you're healing just once or twice total per fight, and that's obviously balanced around you doing runs in Godhome when you already have the boss moveset memorized. Similarly, red tools are extremely fucking expensive relative to how many shards the mobs drop, and that naturally discourages experimentation both in terms of learning which tools to use when, and also experimenting with which encounters you should be using tools on at all. It plays out exactly like in Sekiro where your tools were mostly just good for speedrunning through encounters you already knew during the optional boss rushes. Again, that's a game balanced around NG+ where NG is just considered the warmup.
There's also the sheer volume of grinding you're expected to do if you're trying to buy all the tools to experiment with. Not an issue if you simply ignore everything except the ones for the build you're routing through in advance.
Gimmicks like the Needolin costing silk feel like TC got mad after a playtester with 100 hours practicing Lost Lace realized you could somehow chain stunlock her with it under super contrived circumstances.
Really, the entire game feels like it's balanced around ensuring the game is still hard for their playtesters who've each got 3000 hours of practice in the dev build, and they forgot how doing this makes a lot of mechanics so punishing they become suicidal YOLO strats or virtually non-factors when you are just trying to play the game on launch.

The movement options you get vastly outweigh any amount of difficulty caused by "flowers" being further apart. You were filtered by the sideways pogo and hunters march. The two mask damage is completely fine because the game is balanced around you being able to heal 3 masks at a time, very quickly, and in the air. In the first game the time it took for you to heal 3 masks was nearly twice as long as hornet's bind and you had to be on the ground. Thus, damage was lesser because it wouldn't be fair otherwise. The reason why SilkSong is so polarizing is because its difficulty crosses the line of frustration. This is due to, probably, as other anons suggest, the dev team becoming too good at their own game, and balancing it around themselves, which, over the period of 7 years of development, made the game imbalanced for newer players.
But this is only theory. Lets examine in detail. Take for example the platforming challenges in the early game. The player will notice a few things right away. The first instances have flowers that are meant to be pogo'd, they are evenly spaces so that the player can hold the forward button, and press attack on time, and will likely pogo into each flower consecutively. This is not the case for the later platforming sections, as the flowers are conspicuously misplaced, either too far, or too close. The player can no longer hold the forward button and expect the pogo chain to work first try, he will have to hover mid air, or dash, or maneuver himself somehow to ensure that the next flower is properly hit and pogo'd.
This example puts in evidence the underlying philosophy of the game design in SilkSong, which consists of countering the player's toolkit. This is the difference between Hollow Knight and its sequel. In Hollow Knight, we are given a world to explore, and a character to explore it with. In SilkSong, we are given a world, a character, and an ocean of traps and hardships designed to counter that specific character. This is why it is so often perceived as frustrating and tedious, the game offers tools, and, instead of allowing an easy and instant gratification, it counters said tools immediately, with almost no room to explore or experiment before that.

This is where the 2 masks damage issue comes in, it is designed to punish the player with huge setbacks, a tradition carried over from the previous title, and also copied from souls games. However, both, the previous title, and souls game, were built to allow more room for error. This is not the case for SilkSong, the player is, for most of the game, effectively on a 3 mistakes in a row punishment system. The benches are noticeable farther apart. The world is larger and harder to traverse. The game exacerbated its punishment mechanics, seemingly for no reason, with only one measure to counter balance it, in the form of a late game item that lets the player retrieve their cocoon from the distance. Players are expected to die more often than in the previous game, and the punishment is harsher. The corpse runback is a mechanic built by games that were much more linear and self contained in their exploration and it comes off as tedious and annoying in the world of Silk Song.
All of this translates into a game that gives the player tools to overcome it, but also, unrealistically expects the player to have immediate mastery of said tools. The player is expected to put up with the punishments for failing a challenge, and try again. This challenge and punishment mechanic is at odds with a game that also focuses heavily on exploration of a huge intricate world, a world full of branching paths and secret tunnels. It's here were the game conflicts with itself and deliver what is often perceived as a frustrating experience.
In conclusion, the world of Silk Song is one that wants to be explored, but at the same time, it pushes the player back at every step. People that only care about difficulty find the challenge to be its own reward. People that want to explore the world, find a challenge without reward.

Khann is easy, the three gauntlets beforehand are harder, but after the third you can break a rock that makes a shortcut past them.
Then there's the little gauntlet before him, but it's pretty manageable.

Khann himself though is a bunch of incredibly telegraphed attacks that leave incredibly generous opportunities to hit him. Honestly one of the more fun bosses because of it, only time a gauntlet before a boss wasn't unmitigated cancer, like Groal.

The needolin is a cool idea except that it just does nothing, but I'm not really sure what they could have made it do instead. Just generating silk as you play would be too broken, and the way it works it isn't really suited for doing damage or using during platforming.
Maybe make it give you a small buff if you play it for a few seconds, that could change depending on what crest you have equipped or something, but even that would get kinda annoying reapplying it at the start of every fight.

I don't think there's a problem with difficult games. Difficult games can be a lot of fun if you're looking for a tough challenge.

The problem with Silksong's difficulty is that it's designed in an asshole kind of way. Bosses with moves designed to make you run into them, contact damage for bosses that are stunned, a plethora of boring gauntlets of regular type enemies that offer zero reward for beating them, platforming that are just wide enough to make sprint momentum screw you over, enemy placement on runback routes that take all the tempo out of your game. Flying enemies that deliberately hover just out of range of your attacks so you have to sit there and wait until they come into range, only to psych you out and zoop out of range again the moment you move.

Things like that don't make the game hard. They make the game annoying.

Map markers were a QOL improvement that just point you towards to goal, and I now almost never near quests, and basically never interact with people (especially with automatic groups for dungeons). You can run past virtually every non-boss in Elden Ring and most Soulslikes. Silksong has constant gauntlets where you have to focus on multiple enemies at the same time, and they can all kill you in 2-3 hits easily.

As for this game, similar to the first one, I like the aesthetic. I like how the map looks from the menu. The places in game are nice to look at too. I like how everyone doesn't have a real face and are bugs. Really helps with my autism (I dislike seeing real faces). The music is chill too. It feels essentially perfect to be in.

In terms of game play, for a game where one battles strong enemies or challenges to progress, I feel it falls short when it comes to being fun. As you can guess from someone filtered by HK1, I'm not that good a player, but I still put in work to get better at a game. I can die hundreds of times to get better, and I can enjoy the process. (Picrel is my Titan Souls saves). Silksong, however, doesn't feel supportive of a player getting better. Rather, it punishes for being bad. The long run backs that eat more of your time than the actual boss does, having to do arenas all over when one loses at a special last wave, tools having currency limiting how much one can practice, experiment or fail with them, environmental hazards doing double damage, arenas that don't drop loot. All this stuff makes it tedious for me as I try to improve at the game. Rather than a feeling of "keep trying and git gud", Silksong gives me "Be gud, or give up" feeling. Because of this, I don't feel too favorably about it.

Okay, I"m starting to understand the complaints youtubers have made over difficulty but they really suck at articulating it. Runbacks like the one in Bilewater, benches in later areas requiring rosaries where there aren't enemies that drop them, and tools needing fragments aren't great. You have to deal with most of that through grinding. In the case of rosaries you sometimes need to go grind in an earlier area just to run back to the bench and activate it. This kind of stuff is less difficult and more disrespectful. Outside of that I don't think the core gameplay is particularly hard which is why the complaints didn't make sense to me at first.

I liked it, it was a breath of fresh air compared to act 2 taking its time. I kinda also triggered it late since didn't talk with the fleas troupe for a while, meaning I spent a chunk of Act 2 just going in circles, wondering if that was it.
Act 3 revitalized my interest in the game for me, loved the tidbits associated to it. I liked a lot figuring out how to get to the new areas, finding the top of the map, starting to get mementos, and just finally having the map change other than in worm ways. Sure, bit cheap to add the same attack on all void enemies now, and would've liked more unique bits tied to it rather than some random side stuff you find, but it more than makes up for it with the highlights of the act.
