why did a franchise as sucessful as pokémon always look like fugly low effort trash
>>
because normies will buy it anyway and gamefreak knows that
>>
>>721734104
I prefer the right. Left is too noisy and cluttered.
>>
>>721734459
Stop lying, faggot.
>>
>>721734532
Stop speaking for me, faggot. I prefer the right.
>>
>>721734104
Left is way too visually noisy and incoherent. Also the camera is zoomed in so you never see anything like the whole town at once, so complaining about that large scale view being ugly is misleading since players never see it during normal gameplay. What matters is that the zoomed in view looks good.

>why did a franchise as sucessful as pokémon always look like fugly low effort trash
Because graphics don't make a game better
>>
>>721734104
Left one is a mess, barely any cohesion and too many twisty and curvy paths that would never work as an RPG overworld.
>>

Can you picture left pic running on a GameBoy Color?
>>
>>721736086
Yes
>>
>>721734459
If you're on a little screen, you wouldn't see the whole thing at once. It wouldn't be noisy.
>>
>>721736086
Yeah???

No but they could make games that look like this now and they would be lauded and critically acclaimed.
Instead they choose to make half-baked nu-3D slop.
>>
>>721734104
Left os simply impossible. The player moves in a grid with no diagonal movement
>>
>>721734104
>picture where you can't reuse assets anywhere else
vs
>picture where you can reuse assets everywhere
left leads you to games where you can't have 1000+ pokemon, right could lead you to games where you can have 1000+ if they weren't developed by gamefreak
>>
>>721734104
because gameplay > graphics
>>
>>721738962
It's not cohesive at all. The other artists who did these reimaginings are better.
>>
>>721734104
>always
Pokemon was one of the finest looking GB RPGs. Wasn't until GBA they went to the opposite end.
>>
>>721734570
No, you don't.

God FRLG were shit

Pokemon games are tile-based and it would be kinda hard to implement diagonals in a game with 4-directional movement. Left would work in a 2.5D situation, or a 2D game engine that allowed you to combine two of the cardinal directions to move diagonally.
>>
>>721734104
>vgh, this fanmade asset looks WAYYY better than the one constrained by hardware and space
The same person will then complain that the modern games are 100GB. Pick a side y'all!
>>
>>721743629
I'm dying to know what makes RGBY better than FRLG
>>
>>721745397
Who said anything about RGBY you schizo?
>>
>>721743529
Yes, i do.
>>
>>721734104
left picture is moronic. these games have four dimensional movement. whoever decided to put all those slopes and diagonals in is a complete retard. these games are tiled-based so scattering all those NPCS across all these narrow pathways is just making the town a pain in the ass to navigate.
his choice of colours is also incredibly fugly and uncoordinated. the cliffs and the rooftops are particularly garish.

"FRLG were shit" implies that it was a downgrade, but I forgot the average /v/ goer is a 15 year old macaco now, sorry.
>>
>>721736086
Neither was the right. Pokemon gen2 are really the only good looking games in relation to their system's limitations.
Gen 3 looked far worse than games like Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga or Golden Sun.
>>
>>721746292
FRLG were shit implies FRLG were bad games.
You might be mentally deficient anon I'm sorry to break it to you

>No but they could make games that look like this now and they would be lauded and critically acclaimed
Why? It also looks like shit by today's standards.
>>
>>721745397
awful music and graphics flipped from R/S
>>
@484
frlg were great games tho
>>
>>721734104
The left looks absolutely incredible. We could have been getting Poke towns that look like this. Instead we got goyslop that looks like the right every single time.
>>
>>721734104
You can't even program that shit on the GBA.
>>

pokemon clover devs did it.

>>
>>721734104
the type of people who love pokemon often have OCD, and a simplified "clean" world is preferable to a noisy world.

When you consider it was designed for the game boy, with a 55~60mm diagonal screen for the majority of the games you start to understand you need things to be simple and clear to see what's actually on screen.
Especially when this is the actual size.

>third best installment in the franchise

okay, you might be mentally unwell
>>

It's for autists. Autists like things that are structured, orderly, and repetitious safe spaces.

>third best installment in the franchise
What does that mean for a series with two good entries?
>>
>>721747589
why did game freak need to keep the graphical and town designs of the GB for a remake?
>>
>>721734104
Pokemon looked pretty good on the GBC for an RPG. Compare it to something like dragon warrior 1 & 2,
Yeah it didn't look at good as zelda or whatever, but thats a completely different genre and a first party title.
>>
>>721736086
no, too many unique tiles
>>
>>721742889
then just make it so the player doesn't move in a grid? golden sun had no grid

Nostalgia of course. Same reason for BDSP being the way they are.
>>
>>721734104
Graphics aren't that important.
Also left looks awful, it's just detail for the sake of detail. That zigzag stone path looks fucking stupid.
>>
>>721751392
>looks fucking stupid.
It's to make it less steep. Welcome to the real world, nerd.
>>
>>721751639
The turn is too sharp, it's awkward looking.
>>
>>721751392
Left wasn't designed to be a video game and every time I see someone trying to defend that guy's work, it boggles me that you can't make a mockup like that into an actual game on the actual hardware.
>>
>>721734104

>why didn't devs under time and budget constraints spend a year designing one location in the game
Truly a mystery
>>
Something in between would be great and it would probably work better on the hardware. People don't realize the more detail you give something the less your brain fills in. So the intention could be to make something look "better" but you might unknowingly be taking away. It's like how people think the LOTR movies look cheaper than the books described.

The left isn't even trying to look like a game. Something like this looks a lot better.
