If you had to design a game around fantasy elements, how would you do it? And what elements would you use?
>>721734697same way painters use colorshave 3 primary elements and the rest are used by combining themgenshin had the right idea but their reactions could've been much better, at the cost of alienating their braindead mobile playerbase
Metroidvania with every area being themed around an element, with each element you unlock giving you a new power.>Earth: Wall cling>Fire: Dash>Water: Waterfall climbing>Air: Double jump>Electricity: Air dash>Ice: Spreading ice on the ground letting you slip-and-slide into crawl spaces >Light: Instant healing>Dark: Teleport between shadows (fast travel)
>>721734968Magicka already did that, except with 8 elements.
I want a JRPG where the main character isn't a magic swordsman but an elementalist, and your skill build involves you speccing into different elements.
>>721734697Pokemon, but without the Fairy type, is the best element system in gaming.
>>721735557rock paper scissor system is so low effort
>>721735557Genshin's is better.
>>721735670But it's not just RPS. There are immunities and types that are super effective against other types without resisting them and vice versa.
>>721734697I genuinely do not give a flying fuck about element systems. They don't make good gameplay or good fantasy in general, they are literally something only actual giga autists care about. Autistic people love inventing element systems because it's pointless classification for the sake of classification. Okay you stacked some colorful lego bricks but did you actually accomplish anything? No? Then fuck off.
>>721734697ELEMENTAL NIGGAS
>>721736441oh shit the fun police is here
>>721736441t. born with a high aptitude for the BITCH element
>>721736441Agreed, come up with cool spells instead.
>>721736849All cool spells are elemental. Prove me wrong.
Magic is supposed to be something esoteric and difficult to understand. Thats why wizards are intelligent. At its most fundamental level, the gameplay for a spellcaster should be different from a martial fighter. They shouldn't both just be pressing the same attack button except the wizard shoots a ranged fireball. Castlevania SotN is a good example of this. Where you just press square to attack, but to cast apells you need to do fighting game style inputs.
>>721737404>Wood element
>>721737668Magic is about warping reality to your will. That's why elemental magic systems make sense. Of course there'd be wizards specializing in manipulating various facets of reality, like heat, light, water, or the very air we breathe.
>>721735203and poor tom is there
>>721734697the important thing isn't what elements to usethe important thing is to have interesting and asymmetric interactions between the elements chosen
>>721736441t. man who lists any attack spell as "magic damage"
>>721739328He's the final boss
>>721741109You seriously telling me you'd rather have 12 different elemental resistances rather than 1 magic resistance?
>>721735557Enchant Farm is a JRPG with Pokemon's type system.Being a JRPG means enemies have giga-inflated healthbars so hitting 4x weaknesses with STAB does matter.
Baldur's Gate 3>Fire - yup checks out>Thunder - okay yup sure>Lightning - wait they're separate?>Cold - just.. cold? Not ice or water but "cold"?>Acid - what the fuck are you doing>there's also psychic, necrotic, and radiant (holy) but these aren't elements, just damage types
>>721742069dnd energy types are: fire, cold, electricity, sound, and acidthere are aligned attacks (good, evil, lawful, chaotic)also there are psionicssounds like they just implemented dnd(the thunder and lightning distinction is weird, but thunder must be sonic)
>>721734697
>>721734697is this homestuck
>>721743296What the fuck is homestuck?
>>721743709I think they mean Home Alone.
>>721743296no this is
>>721742915We can get wackier
>>721744090>Dark, Demonic, Accursed, and Unholy being 4 separate elements ??????
>>721734697I like how Dragonfable does it. There's all the general elements including Darkness + Light, a joke element called Bacon that's plot relevant, Pierce (effectively melee), basic (technically elementless) damage used for general purposes and also a Good element distinct from Light for plot + narrative reasons. Then every single character including the player has different levels of resistance to elements ranging from taking double damage (-200) to healing from the hit (200), with skills on the player and enemy side that both influence those stats to go up and down.
>>721745818>a joke element called Bacon
>>721746480Yeah, it's unironically an important part of the game's lore. It's even related to how they ultimately defeat a darkness elemental that has become so large it could swallow the sun and blot out the stars in the main storyline. I apparently forgot about some more niche elements too, but they're more for gameplay purposes than proper elements.
>>721742569I think the lightning and thunder distinction isn't terrible, but wtf is acid doing there?
>>721735557why is Goku there
>>721734697>earth, fire, wind, waterDo you really need more than this? Tie them to general characteristics,>Earth = survivability>Fire = physical offense>Wind = mobility and evasiveness>Water = sustain and healingMake the focus of either 1 or a combination of 2 of them define a unique class. I guess it's really just the setup for a modern ARPG system or Quest 64 taken a step further.
>>721749651He wants to battle
>>721741464YesIt's fucking cool to be able to do extra damage to robotic or wet enemies with electricity, or do more damage to furry enemies with fire
>>721734697I only use 5 elements or rather colors for my card game.Red (Fire)Blue (Water/Ice)Green (Plants)Gold (Good/Power/Wealth)Black (Evil/Corruption/Death)
>>721734697Noita solved this
>>721749651He's a reliable Fighting type why wouldn't he be there?
>>721751357You can do this without explicit element systems, though. You can have 100 different tags attached to different attacks but it can just follow common sense and it wouldn't need to call attention to itself the way a Pokemon-like element system would.
>>721734697Probably some nonsensical bullshit like in OFF: Smoke/Metal/Plastic/Meat/SugarHaving weird-ass elements mean you naturally get more original magic stuff than the stereotypical Fireball, Airdash, etc.... or just a single Element, like Fire, and then a whole bunch of magic branches that are basically all fooling magic into accepting different dubious definition of what count as "Fire" and/or wrangling the element into filling non-"natural" niches, that would "normally" be taken by other elmeents (like improving cauterization to make healing spells out of flames, making a flame that feed on ambient heat to create cold, etc).
>>721735750Genshin and Pokémon systems have *very* different aims.Pokémon just want to make sure a dumb 6yo kid just need to know the element table and find a pokémon or a type that will destroy the local gym to progress. That's why the bonus/malus are so fucking large.Genshin want to make elements be about your team's internal interactions, it's the opposite of pokémon were the focus on interacting with the enemy.
>>721749307DnD used to be about crawling dungeons with low power fuckers.Fucking up traps/locks/enemy gear with a vial of acid bought from the local alchemist used to be part of the expected possibilities. So Acid was a damage type very early on, mostly to denote that it could be used for this kind of shit, not just regular-ass "mess this shit up" damage. Then it stayed stuck that way even when the game evolved to be more and more gamey, so Acid is now a regular-ass damage type.
let me guess, you need more?
>>721751357You could do it like Pokemon where you have 1 Special Defense stat and your Pokemon takes an additional 100% damage if they're hit by a move they're weak to
>>721753120Why is Lightning purple? Why is Earth yellow?
>>721751749This. Gen 1 didn't have a lot of good Fighting types, so of course someone would pick Goku.
>>721734697And this is to go further beyond.
>>721754071>Solar>Star>Light>DBL Star???
>>721754365>KeyThere is some esoteric Kingdom Hearts autism reasoning behind it I guarantee.
>>721734697I always like it when magic is something natural that humanity taps into but then also goes on to create their own specific magic outside of the natural hierarchy. Something uniquely theirs.I just wish it wasn't always used as the "bad guy" magic or the reason everything went to shit in the plot. Just let man innovate in peace.
>>721734968What are the 3 primary elements then faggot?
>>721751912You actually can't because elements is a sacred cow that boomers and millenials live by.God I can't wait for them to die already.
>>721752602Acid damage makes sense though.
>>721742915Pfft, imagine how smart the boomer who made this think he is for coming up with this bullshit.
>>721759064Fire (responsible with temperature)Ground (responsible with solid matter)Water (responsible with life)
>>721734697I wouldn't have a shit ton of elements for one. I've never played a game where that was a good idea. 3-6 max.
>>721734697Gravity is clearly the most powerful on this list
Golden Sun did it well.
>>721763446The Djinns of golden sun are really cute, the best part of the game was finding them and see what crazy shit you unlock.
>>721762109Ok then how do you make ice
>>721764267By taking the warmth (fire) out of water.
>>721736441agreed. so many modern games just tack on an elemental system to whatever existing battle system that they designed just to make it seem deep and strategic
>>721734697I've got a better task for you all
>>721743967>rage was never actually explained
>>721735670Also as the other said a mixture of typings can be a big change like ground and water dropping the elec weakness for a quad grass weakness
>>721735203bayonetta and the lost demon. already did this btw. It's very good.
