If you played way back during S1-2 when they only had Fiona and Lann, the game is basically a completely different beast. And I mean that in both the good and bad way. The core of ESG/DEI is simple. There are investment groups in the world that are so rich and powerful that money no longer has any actual meaning to them. These are the people that can start wars for whatever reason, and they own industries that are drastically more profitable than entertainment (like the MIC). That's why boycotting and voting with your wallet doesn't necessarily work. The investment for ESG/DEI is so strong that for some companies they would be fine if their game didn't sell any copies. Because they're basically being paid by these investment groups to produce the agenda-pushing games/movies. Some companies do still go under, but the money is too appealing and the investment too strong NOT to do it. Add onto it that these investment groups OWN some of the studios in the first place and it gets even more severe.

ESG/DEI is not, itself, a prospect of making money. There are some useful idiots that think "oh making a black lesbian dyke our main character will appeal to a broader audience." But the actual fact is that the chief investors KNOW people don't want it and that's why they're pushing the investment. To demoralize people, make it normal, and to cause the asshurt and division it's produced. They can use it as a shield of calling their opponents bigots, as well, and for social karma (i.e. how bad can Blackrock be when they push equality?)

Blackrock literally will not let you have your fun escapism games because they want to make everything gay and lame for their own benefit. And they can throw away billions of dollars at accomplishing it without feeling a bit of worry.

As someone that started with Fiona back in 2010 before changing to Hurk then finally settling on Lethor, Sword Fiona was always at her most optimal damage by mashing counter attack. That shit didn't change until post Rise with the addition of shield deflect. With that consistent deflect enhanced smashes would outdo counter spam. Hell, the most recent changes to Fiona are also geared towards weaning people off of counterspam by having Amaranth Kick's followup give stamina back so you can keep deflect smashing enemies faces in.

The fact that they walked back counterspam doesnt mean shit because they are walking back an inch after going a mile off course.

DF doesn't have subweapons for you to, for example, chain Gnoll Chieftain down for free hits (which is hilarious because just before his fight we get a cutscene of multiple blades using chainhooks) nor are there any pillars in his arena that you can make him crash into for free hits.
