How is it possible not a single game has topped what Mass Effect did? Or Elder Scrolls? Or any number of examples.
Back in the day we thought "yeah, these games are good but they're heavily flawed. In the future gaming will improve!"
The future has come, and there are literally no improved successors, and these old games now stand out because no one has made anything better.
WTF happened?

The flaws of these games got fixed since games tend to be more mechanically polished on average now, but the things that made them good went away.

It’s a monkey’s paw scenario.

You need to define what you mean. Genshin Impact is a contender to be a bigger game than either of them in terms of scope/worldbuilding. Elder Scrolls has time advantage over Genshin when it comes to that, but give Genshin another 5 years (without the release of ES6) and they could even be equals in terms of lore.

If you're just saying you want an anime Elder Scrolls with first person view, so do I. Call China and tell them to get to work.

Why was there never a big mass effect-like? The closest game I can think of is XCOM: The Bureau

I already knew gaming was dying with ME2, and I knew it was completely dead with ME3. The way they handled the sequels was horrible, all they did was remove elements instead of improving, and by the time ME3 ended I wanted to strangle Casey Hudson for wasting so much potential. What I didn’t know then was that it wasn’t just a BioWare/EA issue, but an industry issue where people only cared about money now.

Sci-fi imagination unfortunately seems like a thing of the past, especially space sci-fi. The younger generations don’t give a shit about aerospace and are more interesting in cyberjunk class struggle nonsense.

Mass Effect itself is a microcosm of why modern vidya is dogshit
After Bioware got bought out suits made them turn the franchise into watered down dogshit in 2 and then 3 just became even worse
Its been long enough that you have zoomers who played 2 when they were 10 on here saying the franchise improved over time rather than degraded because they're retarded

The entire industry is like this now and only smaller end indies are free of corponigger influence shitting things up because now even the bigger "indie" devs put on the corpo leash to get that sweet funding

a mass effect like is going to need writers and lots of voice acting which spikes development time and cost compared to less story heavy genres so typically you're only going to see bigger studios even think of attempting to make something like mass effect unless they cut out the voice acting and then turn off the casualfags that make up the majority of the consumer demographic
it doesn't help that nowadays "RPG" just means your game has tacked on character stats and a trite diablo loot system that doesn't add any depth
