Because of a plot point they can never enter the same room or its game over. So they need to go around the base basically solving puzzles by finding and moving items around through pneumatic mail tubes between major rooms. So in a way they are all reliant on each other and they are "one" therefore the art depicts them in 1 survival suit together.

However your mileage may vary, because most people fucking hate it. They find it clunky to the point of being difficult to play or overly hard. The regular version has an ultra punishing save system where each computer you save at only has 3 saves before it bricks, so you only have like 30 saves over the whole game (trust me, it's NOT a lot for a casual play through, you will die a shitload) and because they're per save point locked, if you burn out too many computers near the end game you might have to backtrack very far to an older computer that still works and save there
