also forgot to mention, they learn in 'game UX' school that UI should be as simple and unobtrusive as possible, because Skyrim and Destiny did it and they sold well
ironically they think it increases immersion, whereas I think the exact opposite is true. when I see mobile phone tier UI in a fantasy game it takes me right out because it clashes like fuck
when the UI feels like a natural extension of the game's aesthetics it not only shows me that the developers give a shit, but it also makes me feel that everything about the game's world is connected and cohesive. it comes across as a complete work that you can dive into

I do tend to see it like that, but I am certain that ui alone is no determinant for immersion. Clean ui can work well in scifi or cyber settings. Ui has to tie in. Stone age rpg with clean ui is likely immersion breaking.

My schizo theory is, they want you inside the computer and no longer operating a computer. When you see a detailed UI like this, you are in the role of being an operator for this strange device on your screen. Hollow modern flat design UI does no longer provide this, it is reduced to data. Just like you are supposed to become reduced to data. All UI is being reduced into empty flat design, even the damn windows buttons. It's so damn weird.

Enclave was really fun
>those fucking sniper magic arrows that deal 2000+ (basically OHKO) if you land a headshot
>damage ticks are broken (kill you super fast if enemies land a hit on you but also kill enemies super fast if you land a hit on enemies) and it's why those poison staves used by mages are so good in later missions
>game really wants you to explore levels in order to find gold and gems that are required to buy new equipment
Too bad there were like 6 classes but 3 of them were kind-of a copypaste of another class (melee, archer, mage, small melee with bombs #1, small melee with bombs #2, mage #2)

Oblivion and Morrowind UIs are very much opposites, yes. It doesn't help Bethesda only made gamepad-driven UI so playing it on PC without mods is ass since you're actively fighting the UI all the time.

It was cool as fuck in Freespace 2 when you get to pilot exchange arc in the campaign and your main menu also changes to a Vasudan ship to reflect that.

The way Oblivion's menu screen works is more or less Fallout's "train-hat" 2.0.
It's basically a second version of your character inside a box that's below your actual character and when you go inside the menu the game takes a screenshot and uses it as background inside the box.
