The writing in 1 and 2 are good enough to be palatable, and maybe great if you're a teenager.
Endgame consists on gambling with the RNG by re-doing bosses, not too difficult because again, the gun generation is simple so you can get perfect or near perfect gear if you're willing to waste a few hours. Some guns are tied to quest rewards so you're fucked if you don't mod it out, as endgame players resort to "read only" farming (save scumming) to get the "perfect" rolls, which is quite common in the community. The games don't let you manipulate your gear in any way (except for anoints in bl3) so once you get the perfect roll at max level, that's fucking it.

Functionally the story is the same as 2. You have a bad guy who is the boss of everything and he's doing bad stuff so you have to collect three things in order to stop him. The bad guy isn't quippy like Jack. He does taunt the player in a "Do what you want I'm going to win anyway because I see everything" way.

Claptrap, Zane, Amara, Moxxi, and Lilith are back. Claptrap bounces between better and just as bad as the previous games. Moxxi is the same. Zane is a lot more quippy. Amara continues the girl power thing.

Lilith is a time traveler now and the most powerful Siren to ever live. There is one new development and that is "The Phase" is a dimension. So sirens use the dimension to do their thing. The phase is a place that seems to exist out of time. There's yet another prophecy of war to come without any elaboration or anything. The Timekeeper is just a vault monster disguised as a robot man (which isn't a spoiler because he's mentioned in 3 as a vault monster). The ripper queen is inconsequential and just one of the mini bosses along with two other characters that you will forget as soon as you kill them.

It kind of feels like what 3 should have been, a slight do-over. 3 is still fully canon though. You do get to go to Elpis and TPS is confirmed canon as well.

I actually liked the Timekeeper, a lone guardian tasked with keeping a vault shut forever that eventually had his planet colonized is a cool concept. From there he decided to interact and help them from the perspective of what's effectively a God to make sure they didn't try to enter it, and he was influenced by the humans to the point that he was envious of their freedom but also despised their chaotic nature. Then you jump forward to the reveal that his city that was supposedly the beacon of order is actually just a lawless dump that he had no real control over in the end.
You could say he's a parallel to Jack I suppose, but he's only really like him on the surface level of being an arrogant man with a gold and robot obsession.
