The characters in it are just not interesting, which I think is the game's biggest flaw - the entire narrative is hung entirely on Hinako, and none of the other characters are really going through anything. Replays of it really emphasize it. Sakuko, Rinko and Shu are just boring. There's very little depth to them and nothing that hasn't been explored ad nauseum in other works. The game needed some side plots that paid off over multiple playthroughs like the game implies in its ending post credits stings, which have zero pay off. The game seems to imply that after the wedding regardless of the outcome the entire town is destroyed by the underground water table erupting all over the town and gassing the place out, and in the final ending the MC overlooks the town with half of it underwater, but despite all the setup and foreshadowing seems content to end the game with a you make up the rest of the story yourself ending which is pretty lame, even by Silent Hill standards.I never actually got the UFO ending because by the time I'd gotten all the 4 main ones I was so tired of playing the game I couldn't bring myself to do it again - it's both too long and too short. A lot of the game time in repeat playthroughs is just moving your character around the game's pretty linear structure.

Especially when Silent Hill endings were typically either just actual different endings that weren't necessary to understand the bigger picture, or were "good" endings that could be achieved on the first playthrough.I don't have much of a problem with any particular bit of writing in the game. Things make sense, character motivations are reasonable, the metaphors work, and basically everything in the game has some amount of nuance. It's mostly hurt by execution. There has to be a better way to tell a simple story about someone wanting to make their own decisions free from outside influence and pressure.
