Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake is massively fucking underrated. Amazing soundtrack, creepy and atmospheric, brilliant story for its time, probably the most challenging of the main games and full of events that proved significant to the whole franchise.

That would help with the cutscenes and codec/tapes pacing as well. The open world mechanics can all easily work, if you just moved through the levels more naturally. Craft the missions around making progress through the map, not just coming and going at random drop points all over. Approach areas on foot, get a call from your support team to set up the mission, they mark your map, and you infiltrate. When the game worked, it worked extremely well. I really didn't like the portable style mission structure and I think that's why the story is so disjointed.

The only Metal Gear games I don't like (discounting Snake's Revenge) are Portable Ops and Peace Walker. I hated Portable Ops when it came out and have never seen it again, though, I would be curious about it considering it is patient zero for the way the series would go after 4--that was not apparent at the time. It wasn't even apparent after Peace Walker, which is why V was such a shock to people at first. Those games have to be second only to MG and MG2 for the least-played in the mainline series. I do not hate PW. If anything, I would actually like to play it on some kind of handheld, but I don't have a PSP or anything that's PSP-like. It seems like a comfy hybrid of VR Missions and MGS3 but I just find it to be ugly and weird when I treat it like a normal release. I also do not jive at all with the motion comic stuff and feel like the Mon Hun battles are weird on your own, like that was never the intention. I'm curious about *whatever* may come next for the series but I think PW is the only game that could really be corrected for the record.
