Hidden Gems thread.

Post good games under 500 reviews that others should buy.
Do include a short description for higher odds of follow-through.

This made me think about how safe this town would be from a flash flood.

I mean, sure, that massive crater is dangerous, but if they built flood funnels on the hills around the town, any rising water would be funneled straight into that catacomb.

Came across this randomly, and even tho I won't buy it since it looks a bit too low effort for my tastes, it got me wondering
Surely there's some really good indie FE-clones out there, possibly very autism-fueled, that are just hidden away on Steam (outside of Banner of the Maid)
>>
>>722071909
I can't say I recommend it. Pulling out won't be a fun experience.
>>
>>722073520
Just look under the Strategy RPG tag, use highest price, discount and $5-10 price point. That's how you navigate steam effectively to find stuff just by changing the genre tag.

Still can't believe tranwiz is making a space game instead of a train game, fucker got famous for modding trains into games all the way back to morrowind.
>>
>>722074226
Campaign is complete and IIRC the multiplayer is coming soon (TM).
The game just needs slightly better graphic (not necessarily polygon counts, just more ship variety).
Trainwiz just pushed a new version for the game updating the engine and fixes a bunch of bugs.
>>
Wrongworld, got it years ago after getting it in a $1 Fanatical bundle and it was kinda fun, very silly and janky little game
>>
Age of Fear series. It's like vidya equivalent of Mordheim with multiple campaigns and sandbox version is free.
>>
>>722074805
The game has space trains. You can ride as fast travel, there's a quest that happens inside it, some mission that involves stopping runaway trains, robbing a train etc.

FPS on a grid rail shooter type thing, very enjoyable, not like the other million boomer shooter clones.

I am once again telling people to buy this game, which is sometimes janky but is an actual hidden gem about being a crazy guy. Visually incredible (my personal 10/10 for art style), good story, not boring but unintuitive gameplay.

If I described this game : it's State of Decay done right
also, the game doesn't try to be StateOfDecay-like, it took some ideas, but implementation is different

if you took my bait, pick trapper, use shovel to make pittraps, it's not Project Zomboid, 2+ zombies will easily overcome you in melee, at least if you alone

CRPG with a management/exploration thing going on. If you like hard sci-fi like Asmiov or Clarke then you'll probably like this game. It is super fucking jank but I found it to be mostly charming/soulful rather than infuriating. Has really funny dogshit Indian and Chinese accents for their particular factions. Plot is kinda ambitious with multiple competing faction narratives and objectives that all converge at the end of the game.

A small kind of janky, but very atmospheric game. About being the evil sorcerer in the woods. It feels great to poison the villagers, summon your demons and raising the dead. Launching attacks on bosses. Before inevitably becoming overwhelmed and turning into a crow before escaping. Giving them the good old "I'll get you next time."
Also has a really neat magic system about finding the right words in spinny circles. Almost mouse gesture but not quite. You'll know the words by heart after a while.

Ive been enjoying Death Metal Derby a lot. Fumes is a much better game, but this is a pure Twisted Metal clone in both gameplay and story, twist endings and devilish host and dumb characters and all that. The recent update made it better, and I think there will be more. Two things though, they used AI for textures and music, that might matter to you. They're working on replacing AI made stuff with human made stuff though. And it's not on sale (15 bucks), so if it interests you but you don't want to pay that much, at least keep an eye on it because the game itself is very fun

I love the game, that's why I shill it, but it's far from perfect. To get to the Twin Peaks part of it you have to get to know the villagers and some events are never telegraphed or anything. It's also harder than most modern farming games. Still worth 5 bucks in my opinion.

The third one is great for the most part. The main issue is that the ghost designs are just too goofy compared to the first two games. The case around Mr. Kokkuri felt really out of place too. Great pick.
RPG that feels ripped straight out of a GBC cartridge, nice story, decent cast of characters, each major dungeon has its own overarching puzzle, lots of options for team building since you can pick up to 4 jobs per character so you can make dumb shit like evasion healer or hyper-specialized glass-cannon and you can basically hire as many people as you want in case of a roadblock that straight up counter your entire main team.
At least ~40h per playthrough if you explore and do side content.

If ya fuck with DROD-style games, consider Tactical Nexus, an incredibly autistic micro-RPG optimization game about clearing floors of enemies in a way efficient enough to read the end-goal.
And then optimizing that down as much as possible to max your score.
It used to be $20, but in a weird twist, the devs decided "the demo isn't a good enough demo anymore, so we're making the base game the demo." And then gave all the current owners Chapter 8 for free as thanks.

Co-Op/PvP Horror, the progenitor of pvp asyms before DbD set the bar (low)
This one runs very good (which is impressive for unrealslop), the monsters have really cool gameplay abilities, and if you are not into the whole pvp thing, its a nice little escape puzzle game.
Overall very good job by devs after the embarassing first game.

Ground Control
You can get the main game + expansion for next to nothing right now.
It's a real time tactics game. It looks a bit dated but the mechanics are solid.
You permanently lose your units if they get destroyed and there's no saving during a mission. You do need to think about scouting ahead, especially if you want to use bomber-planes (anti air units shred them in seconds) or artillery (which can shoot a lot further than they can see).
I enjoyed it a lot back when it was new. Even got the gameguide. It's a bit surprising to see it only having 180 reviews.

Despite being huge in Japan, this series is basically ignored everywhere else in the world except Germany.

I only wish it had more content. I pray the dev releases a mission maker of some kind.
>>
Not a Hidden Gem, /vg/ resurrected it from it's lost media grave after all.
Yet surprisingly, despite 4chan's involvement most of /v/ seems to have never played it, let alone heard of it.

Garage Bad Dream Adventure is a japanese 90's surreal point & click game + fishing simulator with mild rpg mechanics and robo dating sim.
It came out at the height of point & clicks and would have probably influenced the genre as much as Myst, but a publisher fuck up caused a very limited release(like only 1000 copies) and the artist behind it basically gave up so hard he outright refused a re-release.
It wasn't until /vg/ pooled together funds to buy a copy and rip it for the internet that he realized people really wanted it, so he got a new dev team and created the remaster, adding cut content to further flesh out the story, including adding three additional endings and expanding on the original one.

Garage is about a troubled man agreeing to upload his mind into a machine called Garage, which contains a reality that may or may not be a collective unconsciousness realm.
The player wakes up as a nameless machine fished out into this realm, a strange reality resembling a cave flooded with red sewage, of which junk is spontaneously generated; where a shanty town composed of the trash emerged through a community of other machines.

The machines have a strange "biology" where males are strong and mobile but require milk fuel created in the breasts of female machines, who are weaker, less mobile and need to consume frogs fished by males to produce milk. They also need the males shaft(robo dick) to have sex with them to ferment the frogs.
Despite this delicate ecological relationship, you find out that the human man who came to this place in the intro is a real sick fuck that got his kicks by murdering many female machines severely offsetting the balance.
It's up to (you) to find the fucker while also being given the mission by a mysterious machine to escape from Garage.

Certainly, I had anticipated an english patch since its ripping and then suddenly it got a remaster when I wasn't paying attention.

I got it, loved it, but to my surprise not even /vg/ had played it enough to actually discuss it.
It felt like the equivalent to watching Twin Peaks the return completely alone with no one to discuss what was going on.

The unique thing about the game is despite its unusual setting, it's actually the "outside world" that is the most cryptic and compels you to speculate on it.
It's like earth is the dream for the machine race, so there is a lot delve into.

A strange mix of bullet hell combat. And oddly detailed simulation of a solar system after the apocalypse. Act as kingmaker to reunite the solar system. Whether that's by harming or helping the remaining planets. Order toxic waste disposal on someone, launch a moon at them. Or maybe, just build up their army for one final push. Just make sure your chosen ones decide to take it all for themselves.

Magical Civilization 2 with extra, extra autism included. Tile upgrades go far past reasonable. Building trees for cities. Randomly generated, multi level dungeons (100 deep max iirc) to delve into. Individually leveled units, even trash. Magic items for them. Intriguing and very confusing to say the least.
Juuust over the limit at 538 but I'll say fuck it. ASCII WW2 tank warfare. Surprisingly complex. With campaigns lasting however many days. Played on a strategic map with objectives such as defense, delays, attacks. With tactical combat played out as you encounter enemies. In a very abstract but believable fashion. Many tanks and campaigns to choose from. Or even high score hunting by playing some truly ass vehicles with full realism settings on. The mini game to bail your crew out is also pretty cool.

Simutrans Extended. I like the extra details such as track axle weight limits. Signalling being mandatory or your trains drive by sight. IE slow as hell to not crash into things. Even though crashes aren't implemented.
Passenger classes, comfort, catering for acceptable trip times or pay. The time it takes to walk to the station or transfer. All mattering.
Even the simple fact that tiles, though abstracted visually. Are actually representing a real distance. Pic related. Just about 420km of rail so far.
Also the extra graphs which I believe are not in the base game.

It's been a long time since I played Transport Tycoon. But as far as I can remember the cargodest/dist stuff going on is just much more interesting in Simutrans. Even more so in Extended.
Just had an urge to play it again recently. So the network is still very small.

It can't be worse than Simutrans Extended. It's one of the most confusing parts to be honest. You set an amount of departures per month. Which is 6:24 hours for whatever reason. With an offset to make lines align if necessary. I don't quite get it still. So you can get it pretty damn close. But not exactly. It has to be a division of those 6:24 hours. I guess it somehow allows for precise timing, just not in "real" days.
Which is part of why the round trip chart is so important. So you have an idea of what you need to set it for proper spacing.

The only problem I have with it is that the dungeons really need some work.

Thanks to the anon that suggested this in one of the previous hidden gem threads. This game was so comfy. Basically, you play as person that got their body hijacked and their soul stuck in a doll, and they're trying to get back to normal. It's a stealth action adventure game where you try to avoid being seen by humans, as that drains your spiritual power. You talk to other possessed objects, collect items, and play various mini games. It took me about 9 hours to finish 100%. A very charming game.

you don't even get a round trip chart in a-train lmao
you have to calculate the total round trip yourself from the time taken between each instruction and dwell times, then from that work out how to fill the base tool for proper schedules, which is "depart starting station at XX:XX, then depart the starting station every Y hours for Z times"
and then you have to remember or write down what time it passes a specific point if it's going to share track with other trains, because you can't view another train's schedule while editing a train's schedule

sci-fi flavored top down arpg like grim dawn / poe / diablo etc with a bit of bullet hell. It's heavily inspired by poe though. The crafting is really enjoyable and straightforward. very reliable about telling you what's an upgrade or not and there's plenty quality of life, very generous with loot. I've gotten 40 hours out of it and will probably come back at some point
really the only negative thing I can say about the game is it uses AI for I assume every single asset. At the very least it uses it for all the npcs and skill icons

I played the first one about a month ago and liked it well enough until I got about halfway into the DLC stuff and they just made the enemies bullshit to deal with. Too many enemies running down your base with not enough time to build up your forces.
I had heard that apparently people complained that the main game was too easy so the Dev made the DLC fucknuts hard in response. It filtered me so I guess someone had to be happy about that I suppose.
>>
>>722138154
Decided to look a little deeper and overall, it seems the creator plans to replace all the AI with real art during Early Access and just doesn't have a good idea of when and more specifically how to do it yet.
Should probably disclose that in the opening Early Access blurb, but I respect the hustle.

>>722138706
It's honestly way better than I was expecting. I tried Dark Hunting Ground expecting to really like it but I really don't like the progression in that game and ended up going back to Astroloot. For $5 it's a steal.
I didn't know he plans to replace the AI art, that's great. If he does that and just adds more weapons to play around with I'd get many more hours out of it but I'm at the point on 2 ships where the only thing I can do is get stronger for the sake of number going up, but both builds are capable of doing all content unless I theoretically grind for x amount of hours until the repeatable map gets scaled enough
