Literally me
I begged my parents to buy me "enter the matrix" it came on 6 cds I think. And it turned out biggest shit in the universe, I was so fucking mad with myself I never bought any game ever (except PoP warrior within) and just borrowed games from my friends.
>>
remember how you needed to buy a memory upgrade for the N64 to play majora's mask?

Been a while since I paid full price. Indie games I just get on steam sale, big games I always use keysites like idk instant gaming or just pirate from rutracker. I'd never buy a remake or an AAA game, but I certainly won't pirate something like look outside.
>>

Toy Story on SNES. I traded away my copy of Super Metroid for it.

Dragon's Dogma 2. It was the only modern game I was willing to buy no matter what because it couldn't possibly turn out bad, and you already know the rest of the story.

Only other time i ever returned a game the day I bought it was State of Emergency, but at least I got that used for like 10-15 bucks

I was the kinda kid who sold games when he beat them to get new ones. As a result, I played a shitload of great games back in the day, but I have had to rebuild my retro collection from pretty much nothing. I am well aware of how much money I missed out on, and it bothers me everyday

>>
>>722076025
This makes me so glad that the UK has a good returns policy.
You can return any item (game, movie, book, etc) within 2 weeks of purchase for any reason, even if it's used/opened.
It was a life saver as a poor child.
>>
>>722075741
You just like western localization. It completely changes artstyle in box etc. to more generic western fantasy, and changes writing to be less Japanese.
Play DnD.

I found out this lesson the hard way upon realizing that the return policy in my country is utter dogshit. Enough that you wouldn't even consider any future visits when they pulled bullshit like that.

wow, thats insanely consumer friendly. that would NEVER be a thing here in NYC, especially not in the ghetto in the late 90s. fortunately i bought so many games as a kid that my parents and i got in the good graces of the owner, and he would give us discounts and shit like that. even with trade ins, i was probably buying a $40 game just about every week - there were that many good games coming out back then.

I couldn't tell you what it was like in the big cities but trying to knock over a small time shop is downright nog behavior. Stealing the discs themselves is one thing but wiping out the store itself is just plain rude. When the town is small enough you will figure out who pulled it unless they came in from outside.
>>
>>722076438
I was born in 91 and I've never rented a game or movie.

first you spent 3bux on a rental or talked to kids at school
some mom and pop game stores would often get those new games sold to them and they would have multiple TVs running and you could pop A N Y game in and try it on the spot
there was a game store called Game Force in my local Krogers(back when it had a bunch of also-connected businesses in a main hall) that did that
>>

Sonic Heroes was the first time I spent my hard earned money on a full priced turd.
The game has 4 copy pasted story lines, with different characters that play exactly the same.

It made my blood boil the fact some people claimed this game was good.
No, it was fucking not.
>>
>>722076756
You were clearly richer than me.
Because we were very poor, we bought all the games we wanted (better to buy a game used once, than to rent it 10 times plus travel costs to get back to the store).
It means I never rented anything, but at least I still own all the games I loved growing up.
>>
>>722075973

Like $100 in Canada
>>

>>
>>722076845
NTA but games here were 1bux for a 3 day rental(SNES/Genesis)
N64 was spendier at 3bux when it came out
but a single dollarydoo for a weekend of play was some juicy value where I lived
only issue was that after retarded kids ruined manuals they started printing them as part of the cover inserts on the back lmao
many did not say enough

>>722076582

>He didn't pirate playstation games
No, I didn't. My cousin got his Playstation chipped and the thing literally exploded, huge bang, smoke plume rose out of the console, never worked again.
I knew we couldn't afford a second PS if that happened to mine, so I just bought good games for cheap instead.

New York Race was another game I paid full price for and didn't really like, but it took more than 5 minutes because I'd enjoyed and played the fuck out of the demo so I knew I liked the gameplay. no if you picked up a random gamecube game there was a pretty good chance it had massive SOUL and was at least worth a playthrough

i can remember just buying random shit as a kid and loving it. the hobbit. that clone wars game. timesplitters.

and then every nintendo first party franchise also peaked on the gamecube. both multi and single player. so no I would not say the gamecube had any of the n64's problems

That whole generation was insanely good. The PS2 and Xbox also had a really low shovelware rate.

This was a terribly soulless MMO, made even worse by its post-release development arc. They started with actually good combat, with deep melee mechanics, then yielded to their playerbase and made it all hotkey clicking like every other MMO ever. They could have been the only MMO in existence with real combat but threw it away thinking they should just be WoW and lost whatever differentiating feature they had. Age of Conan did the exact same thing.

Most games, actually. I have been extremely susceptible to FOMO a lot in the past and I've been working on that a lot this year. Haven't bought anything day one this year besides Monster Hunter Wilds and Doom the Dark Ages. Games generally aren't worth $70, so I'm finally just waiting for sales on everything and working through a lot of my backlog in the meantime. Recent examples being that having not finished MGSV (and owning the Master Collection), Borderlands 3, Hollow Knight, and Hades prevented me from buying MGS3 Delta, Borderlands 4, Silksong, and Hades 2 day one on a whim. I finished Borderlands 3, another playthrough of original MGS3, and Hollow Knight in the past week and working on MGSV and Hades right now.

If monkeys were real, I would spend an unhealthy amount of time giving them hard boiled rotten eggs and glued together fruit peels with rotten hard boiled eggs in them.
I'd use the finest tools to put together chest nut shells to make them look and sound like there's real chestnuts in them, but once the monkey opens it, all it would receive is the stench of rotten eggs.
I would keep doing this until they refuse to accept food from humans. And then I would methodically replace every single fruit in the park with fake ones filled with rotten eggs. I'd spend a fortune hiring as much staff as I need to make this happen for months, even years until the monkeys resort to cannibalism, and lo and behold, the baby monkey they killed has also been stuffed with rotten eggs.
I don't know why, I just hate monkeys.

Even then, I like grinding SC solo. I put on a video/show or listen to something and just cruise around with the warp pack and FRV. I get like 20-60SC and 2-10 medals every ten minutes. The key is to just find terminate broadcast maps so I can just pop the tower cross map with something and then chill. Much better than having to talk to people and coordinate IMO. I usually do 1-2 maps like that any day that I play since I'm a bit behind on warbonds.

JRPG and RPG are both just overloaded terms, like "love" or "sandwhich". People usually have a more specific idea of what they mean, which goes uncommunicated unless you elaborate. Like how Dark Souls and Dragon Quest are both Japanese and games where you "role play", but Dark Souls has action combat and light platforming with custom character creation while most DQ games are turn-based and menu-based random battles with predefined player characters.

I bought SD Gundam G Generation Genesis for like $50 and regretted it as soon as I got to the 2nd map of 0079 and realized I was forced to deploy OC donut steels that have no place in the story and aren't acknowledged as being there at all, and you also have to recruit units for them to keep their levels and then they just get duplicated if they already exost on the map, it was horrendous, I thought I was just gonna have either a cool crossover game like Namco X Capcom/Project X Zone or I would have a cool game to relive each Gundam story and I got fucking neither.

It was about 6 years later that I would discover that Super Robot Wars was the perfect Gundam Strategy RPG that I had been craving back then.

In the UK, GAME had a 1-week no-questions return policy.

Dragon Dogma 2 is the only game, but Capcom can still fix it (pls).

My family was dirt poor in the 90s so I could only afford a handful of games a year. The first game I really regretted preordering was DA2 though. What a disappointing piece of shit

When I was a kid I saved up and bought the cool Dracula game. I never made it past the second level because I would run out of time or die and the controls were unresponsive. The fighting was fluid but the jumping felt sticky which sucked because you had to make some crazy jumps.

There were official magazines for most consoles that released demo collections with all the new games so you could try them, ZoomNigger
>>
>>722093431
No need for demos for stuff like SNES since you could buy bootleg cartridges for very cheap
>>
>>722077835
Cartridges cost more because the rom chips were expensive. When PS1 came out the price of games went down because CDs were way cheaper to make.

I dont buy games unless I know I will 100% enjoy them but back when Blockbuster was still around I rented Hexen for the N64 and legitimately teared up because my entire weekend was ruined. I know there are people out there that like the discount, primitive Doom clones but I think Hexen is fucking mediocre.

Eye of the Beholder for the SNES. I bought it because it was a Capcom game, and because i was a kid and didn't know the difference between developer and publisher, and also loved Megaman, bought it without proper research. That was the most miserable hour of my SNES era. Next week, trade it for Street Fighter 2 Turbo to a kid at my school.

Sparking Zero. It could have used another year of development since most of the offline gamemodes were lacking features that the previous entries had. The story mode only went up to the Tournament of Power, and practically ever single cutscene was just a glorified power point presentation with no voice acting whatsoever. The whole idea of What If sounded great on paper since it could have been a proper expansion on what BT3 did with those outlandish battle scenarios like Freeza vs Devilman, but they were so few and far between that felt really half baked at the end.

50 dollars in 1992 is about 116 dollars today. Its actually amazing videogames have stayed as cheap as they have especially throughout the 00's and 10's. That seems to be changing in the last few years however.
