I'm actually playing through it for the first time right now, just got to Shadow Moses and that was a nice surprise. There's a lot to like about it I think. The only things really tearing down the experience are the godawful frame rate and the shit PS3 controller, which is pretty awful in retrospect. If we get a PC port and it sticks to at least 60 I reckon a lot of people will love it again.

MGS4 should've been a fucking gold standard for any game that isn't a generic open world or cinematic shooter thing, in terms of movement and controls. Instead the industry willfully streamlined itself so hard that you'll be lucky if a game has a goddamn crouch button, and even cover systems have partially evaporated in favor of just hop and shoot like everything's Ratchet & Clank or arena rules with retarded modern design on top. And while they keep talking about the nanomachines through the entire game, the stuff about warfare and propaganda that was seen in chapter 1, and that weird intro with the TV channels never comes back. The back half of the game is dedicated to "Classic MGS" masturbation moments, and by the end it's little more than a character driven bonus-chapter to the previous games which forced a lot of fake character arcs, and had a very muted message about ID-tagging in war, while MGS1 was totally about cloning and genes; MGS2 was about Digital manipulation and Information Control; MGS3 was about patriotism.MGS4 just feels a bit unfocused as a whole. It checks all its boxes but the execution is lacking, unlike previous games.

My complaints about MGS4 is simple, there's more cutscene watching than a game. You will struggle to find every milisecond of where there is gameplay, of where you're actually doing something. Entirely accurate to the experience. All Kojima needed to was to make bigger levels that consumed more time than the cutscenes. It's cutscene trap the game. Saying anything else is dishonest and it's why MGS4 is so flawed.
