microsoft is looking for a sweet spot where they arent taking a massive loss but customers still are willing to pay for the subscription. i personally believe it just doesn't exist because whatever service they offer here (rent seeking middleman) isn't worth the operating costs

Lmao, pointless virtue signaling

whatever, I had my subscription for 3 years because I did that cheap giftcard thingy a while back? haven't even touched gamepass even at that discounted price, and I would have been better off just buying the minuscule amount of games I did actually play.
>>
>>722174628
Somehow after hundreds of years companies have never learned that price increase =/ more profits. There's a point at which they'd be profiting less because even with the price increase, much less people are going to be subscribing, offsetting the balance.

How do you literally have the best deal in gaming then shoot yourself in the foot like this unbelievably retarded

>Somehow after hundreds of years companies have never learned that price increase =/ more profits
this sort of makes sense when you have a physical product. harley davidson is staying alive despite their bikes being overpriced trash that almost no one wants to buy, because they have downsized their company and are making only as many as people want to buy. the company is staving off bankruptcy thanks to it.

but with digital products, you pay basically all the costs to make the product upfront, but selling the product costs you basically nothing. gaben discovered that the less you charge for games, the more money you'll make, because you'll have reached way more people than you would have otherwise. now of course you're still going to have boomers in gaming company boardrooms who only understand physical products, so they suggest downsizing and price hikes as a way to improve profit margins, which obviously won't work but they'll try anyway
>>
>>722176343
>How do you literally have the best deal in gaming then shoot yourself in the foot like this unbelievably retarded
It's the same thing every time. You introduce a service with a low price so it attracts a lot of people. But the service is not sustainable, it costs too much. So you progressively increase the price of the subscription and hope people won't cancel their subscriptions and keep paying. It's the same fucking thing with the streaming services. At first, they had low prices and now it's so expensive it's not worth it.

a subscription model makes enshittification way more difficult because people can just leave as soon as the platform sucks and go somewhere else that hasn't enshittified yet

the only kind of platform that could brutally enshittify their products and still retain customers is something like steam, because people already have years worth of games and social presence there. and ironically they'd be the last platform to actually do it

>He just needed to make good games, was it too hard?
“We’re not in the business of out-consoling Sony or out-consoling Nintendo. There isn’t really a great solution or win for us. I know that will upset a ton of people, but it’s just the truth of the matter. When you’re third place in the console marketplace and the top two players are as strong as they are and, in certain cases, have very discrete focus on doing deals and other things make being on Xbox hard as a team - that’s on us, not on anybody else...But we’re not in a position - and I see out there, I see commentary, that if you just build great games everything would turn around. It’s just not true that if we go off and build great games, all of the sudden you’re going to see console shares shift in some dramatic way. We lost the worst generation to lose in the Xbox One generation when everybody built their digital library of games.

I see a lot of pundits out there that kinda want to go back to the time when we all had cartridges and discs and every new generation was a clean slate and you could switch the whole share. That’s just not the world that we are in today. There’s no world where Starfield is an 11/10 and people start selling their PS5s. That’s not gonna happen.” - Phil Spencer (Head of Microsoft Xbox Gaming, 10 years)

>>
>>722176343
The answer is simple - Gamepass was unprofitable for MS. The Xbox brand has shrunk drastically and they don't have enough players to sub and pay for the service.

They are in a lose/lose situation of keep the sub price low and continue to hemorrhage money, or raise the price and drive most people away.

>>
I'm glad I was never interested in the service because watching it crash and burn is really funny from an outside perspective.
>>
Realistically, what's next for Xbox? They keep shooting themselves in the foot over and over again seemingly on purpose, but it's not like they can just disappear and leave their player base to die. So then, what exactly is their strategy? Because at this rate, even if there is a next gen Xbox, it's going to cost $700-800 on launch and be DOA because nobody can afford it.
>>
>>722178261
they just take turns forcing the losses on the either customers, the developers and themselves. no matter how they balance it out, someone's getting fucked in the equation. the only way you can be a middleman like they want to be is if you have a good service and you run it very lean, like steam
>>
>>722177270
This. The whole thing is fake and gay to begin with, the idea is that you give people a good deal, and then you close the door behind them and they can't get out.

In reality, of course, what actually happens is a company eats billions of dollars of losses until it can't anymore, and then it shitcans the product.

I doubt they're actually having enough cancellations to threaten the service, sadly. It would be funny as shit if everyone stopped paying for it and they had to shut it down entirely because it wasn't bringing in anywhere near enough to justify the dev costs and exclusivity deals.
>>
>>722178596
>I doubt they're actually having enough cancellations to threaten the service, sadly
the service is already being threatened by being unprofitable, this is probably just going to make it even more unprofitable. trying to price hike a digital product is pretty retarded to begin with, idk if it has ever really worked out unless you have a massive, preferably captive audience (like netflix)

Sony is making more money now with their digital store than during their peak PS2 era, they can keep trying to shit out GaaS as much as they want and it won’t change a thing, what they gain from Xbox becoming culturally irrelevant is more than what they lose by mismanaging their 1st party studios.

Some weeks later my wife lamented that our kids miss some shitty Chinese kids show about animals growing up in a dystopian pod with no one but robots to look after them, so I resubbed on a new email for $7 or whatever introductory price, and sent them an email after the intro period threatening to cancel again and they gave me 3 months at the low price and I still allow SIL to watch her shit.

That's over about 5 months. TES3 and TOTK are good shit. I'm ready to buy VTMB2 on launch. I bought Outpost Infinity Siege for $25 on sale, and that's it for the whole year. $65 spent plus a maybe another $60. No tier of game pass makes sense for me.

Thats not the point retard. Imagine paying $360 a year for games not worth paying that amount. There's no way you can justify paying $1050 over the course of 3 years. There's no way you, me, or anyone else is paying that much. I dont even think I've spent even $360 on games over the past 3 years. Try some critical thinking instead of going "brokies ahaha"
>>

I play roughly 5 big games a year and a handful of indie games. If I budget 30 bucks a month into a game fund, then I could afford to buy these games outright and have money to spare if I wait for sales and use key sites like I already do. A 70 dollar game is only 52 dollars at launch if I buy from Fanatical, Green man gaming, or CDkeys. Two months subscription to gamepass or just buying the game that'd take two months to beat. The value proposition of gamepass is gone.

It will always be shit. Gamepass would be 99% improved by allowing it to sync with Steam and you have access to the titles under their temporary access license, but through Steam. Also, if you want people to subscribe make it so that it covers DLC as long as you keep subscribed. For fuck's sake
>UBISOFT's SUBSCRIPTION
is somehow the least shitty one out there in that it
>Covers every single game in their catalog past and present that is available online, including brand new shit
>Gives you all the DLC including pre-order and Gold Ultimate big dick swinging edition stuff as long as you're subscribed
It still should sync with Steam above but somehow they managed to get the rest correct before EA, Microsoft, and so many others. Ubi should not be leading the pack on non-shittiness but here we the fuck are and now gamepass is so much worse and asking for more money
>>
The degradation of xbox as a brand over the past decade or so has been absolutely fascinating.

The cheapest subscription on Xbox for online play is still 10 dollars a month, and that's a price that will probably never change, but all the higher tiers that give access to the gamepass library will keep swelling in price. PC gamepass ultimate being $30 - $10 because of free online makes perfect sense to the suits at xbox. Expect to pay $20 by this time next year.

You know what the gambit is here right?
They're likely using data and stats on the volume of people who keep games installed and go back and play them, and think they can hold someone's saves and progress on games to ransom. "Oh you still want to play this game you love and constantly play? Well you'll pay another $120"

The gambit is obviously going to implode but their whole aim is to maintain profit while normalising the higher price going forward.
>>
>>722196470
>At what point does Xbox just get rid of gamepass?
I get the feeling xbox would stop publishing gamepass subscription numbers long before they actually can it. They'd move onto some new metric after MAU that includes all the hours Playstation players spend playing COD on the Sony platform, and somehow this number would be used to justify allowing gamepass to hemorhage money a little while longer.
