When I see the image in OP- those lists are based on reviewers scores, and despite everyone agreed reviewing outlets are garbage written by complete shills and non-gamers, the same crowd still obsesses over "scores" and the doritos mountain dew "award" as if they were meaningful- those metrics have nothing to do with game design quality and everything to do with popularity, narratives, marketing, virality, which at this point are so disconnected from games themselves and driven entirely by shit like streamers and fotw fomo fads, audiences that care more for perma-online parasocial bullshit and "being part of a thing" than principled assessments of games themselves- this "GOTY" mentality is like an extension of console warring, and what's most bizarre is death of nuance, this quest for cultural uniformity and forced consensus. Death of understanding there are niches. Seeing old school, mid-budget RPG and metroidvania triumph over over-polished AAA movie games should be positive signs, but those breakouts seem so forced because fueled by FOMO brainrot and online-social narratives rather than organic love of the games. Why does E33 has to be GOTY instead of just a good RPG for RPG fans?- people are desperate for "GOTY" contenders, even if the reality of the game doesn't match. Eg, SHf by all metrics is a mediocre spin-off that got propped up by its brand name and its fanbase' desperation to believe it could be fixed (it hasn't, but regardless, it had its watercooler moment and therefore must be included). So many of these games are propped up even before they come out, eg Silksong and Hades 2, just because they have rabid fanbases and the first game were journo darlings or, more insidiously, because they create good engagement clickbait. And that's the other parts of why journos are so despicable, not only are they shills to marketers but they also follow fomo and fuel clickbait fads and adjust scoring accordingly.
