Why does every Unreal Engine 5 game look like shit?
>>
what's the issue
>>
>>722310379
Because the engine fucking sucks. It's rendering a million thing at the same time and tanking the GPU
>>
They look like shit on motion because it turns out designing beutiful models and architecture doesnt mean shit when it requires fuckshit rendering methods and tacked on lighting you dont understand to make it playable

So of course it's going to have a lot of ugly games from crappy devs who don't know how to use it

Lumen is dogshit.
0 lights in this scene. 0 emmisive textures.
Simply one directional light that was deleted.

>>
>>722310656
Oh, also, viewmode is lit. Nothing esoteric.
>>
>>722310379
Software raytracing is a really bad idea.
>>
Classic baked Directional lighting is objectively the best type of lighting. Not just because it's way more performant (and it is)

But because of auteurship. Lumen just goes with whatever it's logical calculation ends up with, whish is more realistic sure but it doesn't convey emotion. Just like in movies, lighting is often intentional and used to craft a mood and idea. This is completely gone when you let an AI calculate it based on constantly changing movement. Especially in a game that has more corridors, fixed angles and artistic style, predetermined lighting ensures the visuals completely match the vision of the artist. That's what gives old games it their "soul" look.

>some aspects of it aren't as properly tuned for it relative to other things and stand out like a sore thumb w/o more band-aids on top (DLSS)
Hell, I was playing PS4 Spider-Man earlier, a seven year old game, and it has the same issue on contrasting surfaces.

because all of the millions of college students and jeet monkeys crunching for game dev companies only know how to use stock engine effects (if they know how to use them at all)
so you get the same shit plastered on every game and it all looks like ass

in particular lumen lighting is shit because quite honestly ray tracing lighting of all forms is shit and will honestly just always be shit relative to actual hand crafted baked lighting, both in terms of performance and visual quality
its just too late to unfuck these issues because the industry is too big and they can't afford the time, money, and most importantly the limited skilled human resources available that could actually make anything that looks good on the scale that mainstream industry games are now
some indies are still able to make stuff that doesn't look like shit but I wouldn't hold my breath on that lasting
a proper industry crash can't come soon enough
>>
>>722311078
AI will fix this
>>
>>722310936
No that's retarded. You're retarded. Baking light is the exact same calculation except you cache the result by painting it onto a texture. It has a million obvious limitations and has always looked shitty because of fixed shadow map resolution and introduces a bunch of artifacts that are never intended by any of the artists.
>>
>>722311078
Pretty much stuck waiting on a small bored indie group to push and prove tech in a manner no one else is doing, like Kingmakers, w/ shader driven animation systems, so the CPU isn't stuck murdering itself handling rigs for literal 1,000s of models onscreen at once in that game's case.
>>
>>722311213
>Pretty much stuck waiting on a small bored indie group to push and prove tech in a manner no one else is doing
>indie
You’re going to be waiting for a very long time. The current indie zeitgeist is “who cares about that nerd shit bro just use unreal/unity/vibegpt! No one needs to know what’s going on under the hood bro we’re INDIE”
>>
>>722311213
the problem with relying on indies is that they're inevitably made up of those college grad retards that can't tear themselves away from those stock engine effects, hence
>I wouldn't hold my breath on that lasting
>>
>>722311168
>baking light in the workshop is just like rendering it every second on the customer's machine
>it looks shitty because you can't upscale it (to what? something beyond the resolution being used?) and has artefacts
You're right, using DLSS and gaytracing gives us zero problems whatsoever, especially no artefacting, has no performance problems and definitely looks good in motion :/
>>
>>722311294
Indie fags are never going to change on their own. You would have to chase and shame the mongoloids out of game development which is not likely to happen in the current climate.

It would take an act of Steam (either bringing back Greenlight or doing something to require some semblance of software quality and stability standardization) to cull the retards out.
>>
>>722311529
Imagine if Steam brought back Greenlight. Imagine the endless seethe and butthurt that would eventually turn into cope as the devs who can’t make the cut brag about sticking to the dumpster fire that is itchio.
>>
The game looks like that because it's an indie level project with a small budget that is only possible thanks to premade tech, solution and assets, you should be asking that of games that have credits that go for 3 hours
>>
>>722310379

this saves time and money on devs optimizing games manually so you can push maximum amount of slops with the cheapest indian wage costs

>>
>>722311054
So basically these games requires motion blur as a form of anti-aliasing?
>>
>>722312008
Stop sucking some grifter's dick. The techniques themselves are slop it has nothing to do with "configuration". 99% of rendering tech was designed to work in dark scenes, anything closely similar to day-time requires hacks.
>>
>>722310379
because the engine is oriented towards ultra high realism but 98% of the developers who use it don't actually understand how to implement those features correctly. So you get stupid shit like this when the raytracing bounds aren't set up properly.

Similarly, ultra-detailed environments and levels with characters that walk like puppets because they aren't animated correctly.

The entire industry is fucked. Graphics were already solved. You had good pre-rendered lighting and you had good stencil shadows. It worked. You had high polygon count models and high resolution textures, it looked great. Everything was crisp. The games looked good. The games ran on hardware from 2004. You needed half a gigabite of RAM. Games were under 4gb in size.

Now everything looks fucking shit. All sorts of post-processing, anti aliasing, peepeepoopoo sampling, DSLL, BBL, FSR, trilinear filtering, antiseptic filtering, ambient occlusion, ambient exclusion etc etc etc
And the games look fucking awful. They run like shit. The game size is 500gb and you need a thousand dollar graphics card to even run the thing and you need a minimum of 18gb of RAM just to launch the fucking thing.
Computing power only goes up and the games run worse and look worse. You can buy what would have been a supercomputer in 2004 to play games that look like they came out in 2004.

The lighting can be prerendered. It's not that much extra work to bake lighting into a scene that you are already making and decorating anyway. And if you are a seething troon and need your dynamic lighting so bad, Fear, Escape from Butcher Bay and Doom 3 already solved it and gave you good stencil shadows.

The movie analogy is dumb and I'm tired of hearing it. Movies don't use baked lighting. They use real fucking lights i.e. ray tracing. They place real light sources in a scene so that they have the desired effect on objects and the camera as they move through the scene. They don't paint the desired shadows, ambient occlusion, diffuse bounce lighting and specular highlights onto the objects - these are created dynamically by the real light sources out of shot.

Developers should buy me a PS5, new vidya card and all the games, so I can play them.
Seems fair, it's they who want me to play their 60$+ barely working games.
>>
playing this game and even maxed out with rt on you still get these artifacting churning shadows in some places. what a garbage engine
>>
Retards with poor financial skills get roped into buying $123578241 AI gimmicks all for pretty screenshots and then cope with their retard purchases by playing undertale or some VN faggotry on their $30179823521780 PC
Literally worse than gachashit whales lmao

>Carmack teached himself, Tim Sweeney learned from Carmack's source code, Jonathan blow learned by himself, etc
this reads like pasta.
software technology is more complex now than it was back then. carmack taught himself freshman level rendering techniques that only needed to work from one POV on flat surfaces.

It's quite literally ray tracing being so slow it doesn't update on time, every single game where you enable raytracing has this exact issue, there's countless videos on youtube stating that it's ray tracing not updating at the same time as the character's movement.
Just keep telling yourself the same lies about being TAA that did work perfectly fine for years before.

DLSS? it looks...bad

>You had good pre-rendered lighting
i love waiting a week to bake lighting then come back to office and see the baker crashed and having to start over only to notice lightbleed everywhere and having to start over

AO and GI are great, the fact there are problems temporal denoising and temporal AA today dosnt mean we suddenly have to go back to fucking quake 1 graphics from 1997 or when the fuck it came out

Not knowing anything of Lumen I thought that this was some surrealist effect in the Mansion and in my ignorance made the Mansion seem more spooky and otherworldly.

you clown

I'm not tolerating anything because I don't play indie shovelware like op in the first place, you clown
>>
Is there any way of making that wretched lumen lighting have a lower response time?
>>
The lumen in Inzoi is beyond cancer levels. I don't know how my sister tolerates it.
>>
you can also find that lumen shit in Abiotic factory, a game mimicking half life 1 graphic but with unreal engine, i fucking hate turning on my flashlight for that single reason
>>
>>722326723
even in cartoonish cel shaded games you can tell its unreal engine sloppa.
play SMTV for example and then Sandland. both games have the same fucking lighting and looking particle effects. its fucking Wild that when the complaints about UE are brought up many focus only on the performance aspect and not enough on every game looking the same and making vidya soulless as fuck.

Lumen is dogshit, because the technology known as Global Illumination is dogshit, or rather it's a technology whose demands far exceed what hardware can provide. GI is such an insane resource hog, that we'll need several more graphics card generations before we can use it reliably, because right now is like trying to run crysis on a gamecube.

Isnt this DLSS's fault? I noticed this sometimes in FF6 Rebirth and it was gone after I turned it off and did not lose any performance.

Ambient occlusion has been shit in virtually every game since the ps5 launched. Devs stopped supporting hdao and hbao and switched to generic ssao engine plugins which add dark haloes to every object above a certain size. Look at Witcher 3’s RTX update, virtually all ssao shadowing was gone in launch because they cut the hardware accelerated vendor specific tech.

The way DLSS, frame gen, and ray tracing denoising/temporal accumulation interact seems to be quite complex and not as straight forward as "ray tracing draws the image and DLSS upscales the final picture frame by frame" so it's hard to say which aspect is at fault, most likely all of the above. The noise you are seeing is definitely ray tracing noise since it manifests around light changes in 3D space. Higher resolution will certainly help, so if you're CPU bottlenecked and can turn up the res or disable DLSS entirely with no performance impact then you will of course see less noise. But it could also be a result of something deeper with how DLSS interacts with denoising on an internal rendering level.
>>
>>722310379
it's the lazy mans game engine, instead of doing anything you use some plugin to create your sloppy open world and then you let nanite and lumen handle the rest, this also makes it run like shit
>>
>>722310540
I wonder what would happen if they made Stalker 2 and it had the same graphical fidelity as the original, but they kept the marketing budget the same.
Would people really not buy it because the textures were low res? I mean the OG game to this day has good art design, it's not an ugly game
>>
>>722321431
I tried every option in Stalker 2 and they all have ghosting
>>
>>722310379
Engine adaption seems to be highly dependent on the skill of the lower level engineers. DICE could make Frostbite absolutely sing but every other studio who tried to touch it made only colossal fuckups like Mass Effect Andromeda, Anthem, and even Dead Space looked worse than it did on that goofy ass homebrewed Tiger Woods engine.

I guess it's obvious that it would be the case, but still, why are there no low level software engineers in this field anymore.
