Can you believe that this con man used to be a beans salesman and became a video game developer almost by mistake? it was a strange twist of fate, but it makes perfect sense at the same time considering all the times he lied about Fable, and Black & White. His overselling reminds me of marketers in different fields. The guy that sells products on TV infomercials like Flex Tape or something if you get what I'm saying.

>>
Cant wait for his next game where he says you can plant a seed that becomes a tree that birds land in and make a nest and the eggs hatch and fly across an ocean you can definitely explore that shits in the grass fertilizing it causing a new tree to grow. That tree will then provide shade to the player making them become pale and vitamin D starved from the lack of sunlight and die but its okay because your kids you had with your wife who grew up over two decades in game will take over as the playable character.
Then when the game releases it'll have none of these things and he'll claim to be the victim and is never making another game.

I guarantee you a lot of Peter's lies about Fable 1 is just lost to old internet forums. There's so many quotations not even found in that video posted earlier regarding 'peter's sweet little lies'. All I can tell you is that Peter was actually claiming wild shit back then. The way he described Fable made it seem more revolutionary than any game coming out today. You all have no idea how much he oversold the game with features that just didn't even seem possible. But I could go into archives and repost some of my recollections I've posted in the past.

>"Yes, you'll be able to plant an acorn and then watch it grow into a magnificent Oak tree throughout the course of the game."
>One of the lionhead devs posted about the game on their fourms saying he got lost in the woods for multiple game days apparently while searching for a legendary weapon (exaggerating the game's scale)
>you can marry and have children
>You can have children that will become the main playable character if your main character dies
>you can go anywhere: no fenced areas
>you can do virtually anything (moly gave examples of poisoning a town's water supply or burning down a house with someone inside it)
>Going out at night will turn your skin pale like a vampire if you don't get enough sunlight/stay out night all the time
>NPCs can "steal" your open quests and complete them before you do
>gangs of villagers will hunt you down once you become famous/infamous
>you can carve your initials into a tree and see them ten years later
>your behavior as a child will have a big impact on the future of Albion
>every leaf of every tree being a physics object
>every tree in the game being made to be completely different
>A revenge system; the sons of those you had killed would, eventually, grow and train to become lethal warriors, tracking you down for vengeance.
>Real time aging, including deaths due to natural causes
>Your enemies would attack your family/house if you became a noble hero
>being defeated could place you in jail in which you would need to escape or cocooned in a nymph lair which drained your power
>you would grow from a child to adult ( was just an in game tutorial )
>being defeated in combat: villagers could nurse you back to health in which it would advance game months in the world and age you and you would be in debt to village and you would fail certain timed quests, they might need payment for nursing you or have a quest for you. The mayor could potentially just take your legendary weapon as payment

>Go into third person mode to control your hero
>He's as tall as a two-story building
This is why you typically DON'T go into third person mode in strategy games. If he was going to go with this, he should have planned around this. Manor Lords lets you do this, but its fine because the dev planned on this from the beginning, so all the buildings and units are to scale.

I will unironically miss Molyneux. Both to see the weird ideas he came up with and to clown on him when he couldn't deliver on half of it (though, typically he still made good games)

It's probably his time, though. He somehow created a new personal low by promising the greatest-sounding god game ever and delivering a broken phone game, and now his latest game makes your typical indie city-builder shovelware look cutting edge.
>>
>>722339008

The original hype man in this industry. I hope his game does well. He may have over hyped every game he was involved in but none of them were ever bad. If there was a compilation collection of all his games he worked on I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

>>
>>722341716
I know exactly what you are talking about because I was a kid or teen around that time period. I remember me and a few friends were very hyped reading all the promises he was making for the game. The hype was definitely at a level I've never really seen for any game before or since.

With that said though the game was still good. I also think he was light years ahead of his time with a lot of the promises. We kind of do see a lot of what he promised in games today. It only took a long time for this to be realized in gaming. Things like wild fauna and planting seeds? Well that actually is a thing in plenty of games today. Now the planting seeds that turns into forests isn't necessarily a thing today but its not like this couldn't be a thing technically if a dev wanted to do it.
>>
>>722342047
I don't think you understand but he promised way more than this for Fable. He made Fable seem like it was going to be a scientific breakthrough of a game with how he hyped it up to be. Nobody ever got the impression Fable was supposed to only be some short adventure game when reading or hearing about all the hype.

A lot of this would be groundbreaking stuff even today. Things like your own children becoming the new main character in a fantasy based action RPG? And this can theoretically happen over and over as your characters can also die of natural causes? Not even a single modern game is doing that.

It was one of the most impressive games that's for sure.
The engine was great, the creature was awesome, plenty of fun moments to be had...
But the game itself was kinda rubbish. It was way too shallow to be fun. Very limited amount of buildings, very slow gameplay, ideas that didn't work out, etc.
It was a fun playground, that's it. Picking up trees and putting them in your stockpile isn't fun gameplay, but it was way too slow if you didn't do all the work yourself.

Molyneux did make several great games though: Populous, Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper, Syndicate, Magic Carpet.
But once they started up Lionhead it all went to his head and he started sprouting bullshit constantly.

I don't think it would be groundbreaking. A lot of people play these types of games for the satisfaction of seeing a character grow as well as growing the NPCS, towns, world around them. All of those small things feed into that sensation just like seeing stat numbers go up, getting gold despite never using it, or getting another weapon to go with your other thirty can still give players that sense of progression and character building.

>I don;t really understand the hate for the man, as he was behind a lot of famous franchises.

Most people here were literally born after Molyneux's legitimate wins.
He's not a pure con artist by any means - he pretty much personally invented "god games" as a genre with Populous (1989) as well as theme park simulators (Theme Park, 1994). He's got more legitimately good games to his name than most industry figures. But all of those are from 80's and 90's. In the modern era his name is synonymous with overpromising and underdelivering, and that's what most people are familiar with.

>Amazing that young me was dumb enough to fall for that

In your defense, gamers were a lot more easy to fool back then. People seriously believed this was real Killzone 2 gameplay

There are a few medieval games that I don't recall the name of which do that, I was just looking at one during the Steam sale earlier today. I was recently playing a game called Wildermyth which did that too, over the course of the game my dude had two sons and then retired himself..

Sorry, but Populous alone make the guy our guy forever. Good? Sometimes. Cool? Always.
Now after googling other devs I learned that other on Populous team, Glenn Corpes, did Battle Engine Aquila and that's wild.

He peaked with Dungeon Keeper 1 and has been chasing that masterpiece ever since. Sad.

It looks nothing like a 90s game, clearly mid-late 00s

he at least came clean on why that game never came out, for how much it was overpromising it never actually materialized so technically he never lied.
