HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THIS

You were rewarded for being a kid playing around with the canon

I was a kid and played around with the canon and never found this so that just proves its fucking random chance theyre relying on you to stumble into it on a very low likelyhood.
>>
>>722353362
You didn't get the star. A lot of people didn't.

I seem to recall being like 7 years old and accidentally misfiring the cannon into that corner and being super surprised at what happened
>>
>>722353625
this. the idea behind the game is not that you rush through and 100% it. the idea is that you treat it as a toybox, enjoy the act of playing in it in and if itself, and if you keep at it, eventually defeat bowser. your natural childhood curiosity would sometimes lead to you discovering secrets, which are all the sweeter when you do find them. a much smaller percentage of players would get all the stars, which was perfectly fine.
also, only one kid in your friend group actually needs to figure it out. passing around secrets through word of mouth was part of the fun.
>>
>>722352831
the name of the star is the hint, retard.
>>

I know this is bait, but

You don't have to get all the stars to beat the game.

You can only target a limited number of walls with the cannon, numbnuts.

Really shows how times have changed. These days no one has the patience or time to mess around in a game for that long. People rarely mess around in games at all, they just move on to the next achievement or the next progress bar. You can see it with puzzles too. Some game puzzles used to be so tricky or unpredictable that they were just too hard for kids, so you had things like GameFAQs or else you would just be stuck for hours. No studio will risk that anymore, every puzzle will have been carefully streamlined to ensure the optimum pass-rate among playtesters.

Blast WHAT away using the cannon
>>
>>722356760
(it)
But seriously, it would be much easier to find out on the JP because it at least specifies that you should use the cannon.
>>
>>722352831
I watched my dad figure this out in 1996 and he didn't really struggle with it at all. The mission is called blast away the wall and there is only one cannon on the entire map, which is obviously something that is used for blasting. Plus you can only target a small number of walls with the angle the cannon is placed at.

Yes. Native AA at native res is what hides all of those one-pixel gaps all over Whomp's and any alteration will make them visible. You can even see the star itself straight through it.

I got an N64 in Christmas 1996 with Mario 64. I didn’t get every star in Mario 64 until early 1998, I beat the game a day or two after getting it but there were several stars that I didn’t find because I didn’t know about them and I went to play other stuff. I’d come back to the game and fuck around a lot, that’s how I got the 100 coin stars and all that. I remember the last star I got was the slide speedrun star, my friend told me about that one. Anyway moral of the story, 100% wasn’t that important back then and you were expected to get it over time rather than right after you beat the game or whatever. Star Fox 64 took me forever to 100% and I played that game more times than I can count. Of course there were guides too, we’d share guides for stuff like Super Metroid since some of those missile tanks were just in random spots.

The problem here is that the game didn't bait you into aiming for something near that corner.
All broken walls should be designed in a way that the world's layout would eventually make you likely to accidentally run into it.

Games where the only way to find hidden walls is to attack everything is bad game design.

Mostly agree, but BOTW and TOTK are two modern games that go against this opinion
>>
There's only two walls by the canon. They don't tell you to hit the corner of the wall though
>>
>>722352831
If you are at the top of that wall and walk near it, you can clearly see a diagonal outline that looks completely out of place. It's clear that there was something in there.
>>
>>722354885
You cannot do this in a really large player space without the issue of finding becoming something incredibly low. There are only like, 8 walls to hit from the perspective of the cannon in that level.

Something has been lost to time with Mario 64. A lot of basic knowledge has been erased, known only to oldfag sages, yet the mechanical skill of players has increased exponentially. It's to the point where SM64 has retconned itself, and the game is not actually what it was made to be, but an endlessly reinterpreted version of what players expect - shaped, molded, and recontextualized through decades of speedrunning and video essays.

How many players even know you can monkey bar under this bridge? If you were born in the 90's it was probably the first thing you did.

Galaxy would have the same thing but instead of it being a sub-area, you'd have a launch star inside the tower that would break away the ceiling and have the giant pizza be a planet that you could see floating in space the whole time wondering how you get there.
Ah and replace the red coins with silver stars
>>
>>722356760
If you can't get it based on that hint, you've been filtered by a star that 7 year olds figured out.
>>
>>722368662
Same way you were supposed to know that breaking some blocks in castlevania has chicken in them.
You fucking don't and if you stumbled across it, you were rewarded.
There was no star, only a 1-Up which doesn't affect completion at all. Devs removed the star because they didn't add any hints and left it as purely a coincidental thing.

Odyssey has a moon in reference to this but i failed figuring it out at first despite having the idea to look up because i didn't even know there was a first person camera view in Odyssey

You either press it or you don’t. No such thing as half.

My first playthrough was SM64DS and it took way longer than I'd like to admit to get this. It wasn't clear at all and I only happened to look up after losing my mind getting lost figuring out how to get to that wing cap area

it literally tells you to BLAST AWAY THE WALL, and you can fucking see the seam where you're supposed to do it
>>
>>722384034
Only the most faithful of us knew. Should have gone to church you heathen.
>>
>>722409251
You couldn't see the seam on old shitty CRTs.
>>
>>722391802
But some of the levels have yellow arrows pointing you towards the end of the level...
>>
>>722409317
on retroarch at 240p with a crt filter on you can still see the seam flickering, is it really not visible on real hardware
>>
>>722352831
Ah, I see — that’s a screenshot from Super Mario 64. You’re on the level Whomp’s Fortress, and Mario is doing a wall kick (wall jump) off the brick wall.

This part of the game is notoriously tricky if you don’t already know the mechanic. The designers expected players to figure out the wall kick (jump toward a wall, press jump again at the right time to push off), but the game never makes it super obvious that this move is essential for progress in certain levels.

So yeah — you weren’t really "supposed" to just know. Most players back in the day discovered it accidentally or by reading the manual (since the N64 manual actually explained the wall kick move).

Do you want me to break down exactly how to pull this move off in that spot so you can clear it reliably?

This one was never a secret, from soft straight up told you how to do it when the DLC was revealed.

How were you supposed to know?
>>
>>722380336
same the game is fucking stupid not because of the gameplay but because it relies on literally random shit happening and you eventually figuring it out based on chance. This is why walkthorugh/advise magazines were essential but the internet replaced them.

we have a word for that in 2025 and it's called autism

>People rarely mess around in games at all, they just move on to the next achievement or the next progress bar.
you can also blame modern games for that, and not just the players. very few games even have cryptic shit in them anymore so there's no incentive to explore at all.
>>
>>722354914
tbf I didn't even know you could blast away the other wall.
>>
>>722358925
from mario's perspective, he didn't even know bowser was in the castle.
>>
>>722410729
I have autism as well. fuck normies and midwits.
>>
>>722368662
there's no purpose for knowing this. lives don't even save and reset to 3 when you restart the game.
>>
As fun as Mario 64 is, it's stars after #1 boil down to

That's more than I ever got as a kid. I think I peaked at like 85 or something. I remember having a lot of trouble with the upstairs levels, especially Tiny Huge Island, Wet Dry World, and Rainbow Ride. I only got the full 120 a couple of years ago.
>>
>>722412189
NTA I figured that out on accident

Alright, which courses were duds? I nominate Jolly Roger Bay and Snowman's Land, both were tedious and unfun at a certain point. Dire Dire Docks is a close third, Whomp's Fortress being fourth.

as a kid I didn't care about the 100 coin stars and just wanted to see all the levels
