No it isn't. The character and story are really bland and boring, a massive downgrade from Jin and the Mongol invasion. Gameplay and exploration are still good, graphics are good, overall atmosphere is still nice. But it is a lesser game overall. Combat also got ruined a bit in the switch from sword stances to having different weapon types.

I've played the game for about 15 hours, and nobody has pointed out something that's been really bugging me about the game. It's set in 1600s Japan, and you play as a woman, and nobody is sexist. Nobody has any problems with Atsu being a woman warrior and they all accept it as totally fine and never insult her or look down on her or even joke about it. Even the villain is explicitly stated to NOT be sexist and he freely welcomes women into his army and you fight generic female grunts. The game has absolutely no sexism, not even as an obstacle. You'd think making the villains all be major sexists so the female protagonist could overcome it and prove them wrong would be such an easy writing layup. It feels like they're so afraid to depict sexism they won't even include it as something bad. It's crazy, it completely takes me out of the world. Also the characters should be racist as shit to the Ainu, and the Ainu should be racist right back, they were in the middle of taking over their island and murdering them.
It feels like the game is one of those sony HR bluesky things where they can't depict things like racism or sexism - even if they're explicitly depicting them as bad things only the villains do - because that might make people upset.

There's a few fundamental issues here. The first is that the more realistic you try to make the story, the less it will make sense. Japan has had female warriors. When things were dire, noble women of samurai families were often expected to fight and die as the end was approaching. However, the reality is that they were still seen as weaker than men because they were. So by drawing attention to this fact, and trying to adhere the real history, you're simply creating dissonance between gameplay and story. Not a single person would cower in fear at her shout. Female warriors work best when the scenario is less realistic, like when Japan does it mostly because they want an attractive character to play as.

The other reason is that despite everything, they probably knew this would go too far in the preachy direction. Focusing on this issue with any competency would require writing skill that is beyond their abilities. It's a shitty game with a shitty progtagonist, but it's not actually that woke.

An interesting element that there's been hints of is that because she's a woman she tries to avoid direct fights and because she's not a samurai she has no problem fighting dirty. She waits for the Snake and his men to get drunk but then shows herself before setting the hut on fire. It would have been better if she lit it from the outside then ambushed them as they ran out.

Hopefully there's more of her fighting dirty and less girlbossing her way through her problems in the rest of the game.

I have to agree. Open world ir more alive with npcs and is more fun to explore, bounties are cool, i really like the upgrade system for gear and also that you have to go out for shrines to get new skills, not just kill enemies. Story seems kinda similiar so far, but Atsu feels like part of world when you have random people chatting you up for secrets, you can gamble and learn about your associates, family etc. Jin was too disconnected from his world.

Hell's Paradise is an anime about some Japanese people going to a mystical island to fight demon gods or some shit. One of the best aspects of the story is a female guard who is constantly and persistently looked down on for being a woman, so much so that she internalizes and struggles to stifle the criticism in her head. She eventually overcomes it by accepting her limitations and fighting in a way that doesn't rely on using brute strength like a man. Hell, in the recent Demon Slayer movie one of the women characters goes through something similar.

Japan cartoons explicitly tackle this subject and make likable, interesting, popular characters in the process. America's liberal puritanical dipshit hybrid ideology can't even fathom the possibility. It sucks. Women can be great characters like men, unless their dumbass writer happens to be in the United States.
