Ignoring all the story debate, I hated the gameplay. I found the combat more frustrating than anything else, the enemies are sponges and nothing flows well. This game should have been more focused on exploration, puzzle-solving, atmosphere, and story, but in the end, it's an action game with a lot of wasted potential. I think that old PS2 game, The Suffering, did a better job of making a "Silent Hill-inspired action horror" game, lol.

The gameplay is basically the same, but the new documents reveal much more of the story. Honestly, it's a pain to play the game multiple times, but watching only the endings won't provide enough information about what really happened in the game, you will be in the dark about a lot of things, for that you need to search and read the new documents.

But the only people who will notice it are the ones reading the signs and paying attention. f constantly shows the player how terrible her father is in the most comical way. I can only guess why this happened is because criticizing Japanese culture by native Japanese people is frowned upon by huge business. She also has this bizarre hatred towards her mother, who's only protected her. The worst part is that she knows she has these dumb feelings, says they're wrong, but continues to hold onto them.

There is a lot of crucial information that you only get from new documents and rooms, and only watching the endings is not enough. If you only played it once, you would not know the story of Kotoyuki, his family curse and obligations, Hinako special blood (that's why she is chosen), the previous "sacrifice" (Mayumi), Hinako mother's illness, her father's past and story, how the sacred tree religion was created, how the Inami religion was created and corrupted, the gas, the fox curse, origin of the drug, Shu and more.The story is very interesting and well done, but you need to get every detail to see the big picture. They streamlined some aspects of the Otherworld for repeated playthroughs, but I don't think this will be enough to encourage repeated play and most players will only once and get the superficial story of the game.For this to work, they should have made many more significant changes on future playthroughs, such as introducing a new character's point of view, new maps, skip some areas entirely (they basically did this with some otherworld parts) and new routes, similar to how Nier did it.

Can we talk about how fucking AWFUL the enironmental design is. The Otherworld is a fucking embarrassment and the town somehow manages to be more visually dull and boring than Genericville USA, and they make you backtrack thru it like FIVE FUCKING TIMES per playthrough.
Only time you backtrack is from Rinko's house to the middle school. Meanwhile precious darling Silent Hill 2 has you going through the same streets way more times.
