Even JRPGs were harder then than the ones we have now. Being difficult has been considered a niche for so long after that that Dark Souls was considered to be a trendsetter when it came out and it's old too now and still not considered to be the norm. Casuals complain about games trying to capture the Soulsborne audience with their difficulty when that was just how hard a game was normally back when I was growing up.
