>>722498978I think any race can be made cool or shit. Elves are shit when they're just humans with pointy ears, but they're cool when they're more like faeries. Small races are shit when they're intentionally hit with the ugly stick to fend off pedophiles, but they're cool when they're cute fapbait. Animal races are cool when they're actually well thought out and show a lot of individuality and aren't just kemonomimi or lazy copypasta. Alien races suck when the writers go too far and make them completely unrelatable, and they also suck when they're just humans with random bullshit glued to their face, but they're cool when they're blobs or something more monstrous.

If I weren't a lazy guy who just sits around all day talking/daydreaming about games and actually made games, I think that'd be an interesting problem to tackle. Most game developers look at giant and tiny races, or more monstrous or oddly-shaped races, and give them a hard pass, since balancing them would probably require building the entire game around them from the beginning. I'd love to just figure out the specifics of the problem and how you can bend a world around them in a natural way so it all makes sense. I can't stand it whenever someone says, "No, you can't add that, it'd be too unbalanced," because it's misrepresenting the problem. I don't think there's such a thing as a broadly-defined character option that's too good or too bad - it simply needs to be balanced appropriately. I think everything can be. Sometimes it just takes work. And who wants to work? I don't.
