Its mostly forgotten I think. Only a small community holds a torch for it and they aren't listened to really.
This probably applies to all dark souls games and their dedicated fans by now. The sequel series eclipsed it in design and its been like a decade since the last souls game by now.

Having the player's iframes tied to a specific stat (Adaptability) made combat feel clunky at the start no matter what build you began with which definitely soured a lot of people's opinions on the game despite the rest of it being well-made.
>>
>>722499196
It's confrontational, smart, argumentative. Real dungeon crawling adventure fromkino. It doesn't cater to the lowest common denominator like Elden Ring, it's not mass appeal, this is... 2kino.
>>
>>722499196
Dark Souls 2 is slow and methodical, you have to think and anticipate, you have to level up stats if you want better rolls and so on.
You can't just rush past mobs and play it like a dumb action game boss rush like Dark Souls 3 where stamina means nothing and healing is instant.
Valid criticism:
>gank squads, shrine of amana, frigid outskirts
>APD not being explained (it's a good mechanic, just another stat you have to level up because RPG, but it should be explained)
>some boss fights being shit
>>
DS2 is literally what every GITGUD faggot claimed DS1 was and they hate it because it shits on them, and outs them as a fucking scrub faggot who ran around with RTSR setups 5 second killing bosses and uploading youtube videos after 3000 attempts of "look how l33t0 n33t0 ch33t0 i amz i 0 hp no hitted teh boss!11!1!"
also its kinda ugly as fuck but we can blame that on the consoles shitting their pants due to the lighting engine needing to be gutted
if it was released today it'd look amazing on PC and run at 10 FPS on consoles and people would just laugh at the plebs as it should be
>>
>>722501149
ADP should never have been a stat. Having to level up to have iframes just makes combat more frustrating than it needs to be at lower levels when most new players are trying to get into the game in the first place.

At release it was just worse than DS1 in every way aside from PVP.
But so were DS3 and onwards.

It was blown up by ecelebs and their braindead fans who've never even played ds2 over the years, despite easily being one of the better souls games.
And even if they play it they probably play the DX11 version, which has horrible and nonsensical enemy placement throughout the entire game.
>>
>>722501408
Spacing and strafing is really op in ds2 so l2p fgt
>>
>>722499196
Wasn't as good as the previous 2 games, but even though it's still decent people would act like it's the worst thing ever. Of course this made contrarians praise it blindly and call it the best game in the series, which then made the people who disliked it hate it even more.
At launch people enjoyed it enough, but still held it in contempt due to preorder bonuses, season pass/confirmed DLC at launch, and the massive graphical downgrade compared to the previews.
>>
I won't play this one over a personal vendetta.
>>
>>722502531
>contrarians
it's (sotfs tho) is my favorite souls game because of the atmosphere/slowed down but still dangerous style, plus the areas feel like some old D&D adventure shit that DS1 had in some areas.
>>
I enjoyed it but the criticism of trolly enemy positioning and aggro ranges and the poor world consistency have merit soul memory and despawning mobs also rubbed some people up the wrong way but I wasn't too fussed about them.

>I'm going to make a video on Dark Souls 2 even though it's a popular topic, because I believe I have more to say that hasn't been said already

This is a confusing case to me. What compels this to happen

Prior to DS2 the entire Soulslike genre was literally only Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1. Those games had a great run and the franchise was running on pure hype and then this turd gets released
The biggest flaw was the god awful gameplay which was a massive downgrade from both Demon's souls and Dark Souls but other aspects of the game like exploration and aesthetics also suffered
Expectations for DS2 were incredibly high and it failed to live up to any of them and we didn't even know of a good reason as to why. People blamed the director and his B team because that was the only outwardly visible difference between the working conditions of DS2 and the prior games
>>
>>722503739
>We don't know why
>The first retard they hired got shitcanned midway through and they had to salvage his dumb fuckups on a too short schedule while also ditching the lighting engine which was a massive part of the game, because the consoles couldn't stop shitting themselves
Yea we just don't know at all. It's a big mystery.

I'm obviously biased because Scholar is still the only way I've played DS2 but I still don't understand people saying Scholar ruined enemy placements. All the screenshot and video of differences I've seen seem inconsequential or better in Scholar.
The only things I remember being annoying to deal with even on repeat playthroughs are the group of executioners before Executioner Chariot that try to ambush you unless you inch into their aggro range individually, or the stupid hollow in Forest of Fallen Giants that waits on the ladder to kick you as soon as you start climbing it, but at least that kind of teaches you they can do that. I don't actually know if the executioners are a Scholar thing but I figured they were.
Other than that, a lot of the enemy placement annoyances, to me, are from ranged enemies, and I blame that more on the lock-on being way too restrictive for the ranged weapons you're supposed to counter them with. I don't think there would be nearly as many people upset at Shrine of Amana and Iron Keep rangers if you had Elden Ring's lock-on range for bows and staves
>>
>>722499196
I've come to realize that people don't actually want to be challenged. They want safe challenge, only in their own terms lest it's "unfair" and "artificial difficulty". So that's why.
>>
>>722504860
The Chariot ambush guys are in base DS2 guy, but only on NG+. A lot of Scholar changes are just adding NG+ things to NG.
>>
>>722499196
Janky, unfinished, butchered, was made by secondary members at fromsoft, ambitious, chaotic, daring.
If I can choose one word - it's WILD.
>>
>>722504860
Aurous armor set is in a chest in the gutter now, which is a good thing since in vanilla you have to farm an NPC invader with random low drop rate (absolute cancer).
It's also easier to farm the shadow set and heide knight set
>>
>>722503739
DS1 post O&S is still a massive turd and I will never understand DS1 fags who will defend the entire game when half of it is a complete mess with reused assets, unfinished areas, and some of the worst bosses in the series.
Obviously DS2 has its problems but I feel like soulsfags memory hole a huge portion of the series or just haven't replayed them in a while
>>
@mods can we start banning OPs with red borders?

lmao no, that encounter is identical in both Vanilla and Sotfs
Both have additional black phantom spawns in NG+

Shieldchads don't understand most of the hate because they don't care about iframes and thirdies with potatoes will always like it because it ran well on shit pcs so there will always be two populated sides entrenched in their beliefs about the game.

I shitpost about this game being awful but I have never played it.

PC only faggots who never played any Souls game besides DS1 at the time were upset that it wasn't just Dark Souls 1 expansion.

>DS1 post O&S is still a massive turd and I will never understand DS1 fags who will defend the entire game
You could never understand DS1fags because they aren't mindbroken drooling retards like you. DS1 is still great in its second half this is peak DS2fag cope, DS1's second half has one bad area and one really bad boss.
Tomb of the Giants and the Duke's Archive are kino, the DLC is pretty good all around, the first part of Lost Izalith is decent and only turns bad when you enter dragon ass hell.
Bed of Chaos is of course a bad boss fight but it's crazy how DS2fags try to ruin the entire reputation of DS1 over this one fight when their game is stuffed with shitty uninspired bosses from start to finish.
>>
>>722499196
What the fuck is with this recent revisionism of DS2 actually being good?
There's so many things wrong with it. Enemy placement and design seems more annoying than anything, map/level design is frankly bad and feels extremely limiting. The bosses are generally bad with few standouts.
Also it's ugly, and blatantly scraped together from bunch of assets that the team managed to finish.
Now, I am not going to say it is without merits. Power Stancing was great addition, and stuff actually changing in NG+ cycles is something they should absolutely do in other games too.

>What the fuck is with this recent revisionism of DS2 actually being good?

Its bait, newfaggot
>>
>>722507198
>DLC is pretty good all around,
DS1 DLC has probably the worst level design in the history of the franchise
>>
>>722507346
It's a bit too linear for my taste but it's far from the worst that title goes to the double swamps of Road of Sacrifices and Farron Keep in DS3
Or Frigid Outskirts in DS2 but that one is so bad it feels like cheating to even bring it up like it should be a category of its own
>>
>>722499196
Controls are shit.
HP gets reduced to 50% when you die.
The world layout is garbage.
Mobs don't respawn after a certain number of times that you kill them.
ADP stat wastes your levels.
Endurance stat or whatever only serves to increase weight percentage and nothing else.
Lots of hidden walls that lead to nothing/nowhere.
Mobs chase you forever and can hit you through boss fog doors.

The best thing DS2 has brought to the franchise is that it makes people seethe uncontrollably when it get mentioned.
>>
>first time seeing sunset in majula
>first time seeing drangleic castle in thunderstorm

>first time seeing ivory king emerge
so many kino moments

>Mobs don't respawn after a certain number of times that you kill them.
you can join a covenant that makes them infinite respawn. you can also use a bonfire ascetic to respawn them for another 12 kills.

I actually really liked this about Dark Souls 2.
>>
>>722508254
bonefire ascetics also can give you ng+ boss drops
>>
>>722501149
Explain why grip strength shouldn't be a stat where at low levels there's a chance of your weapon falling out of your hand, and leveling it only incrementally lowers the chance of this happening.
