Are there any innovations left in FPS games? What could this game have that has not been done before?
>>
>>722505638
Why does it need innovations.
Just finish the story.
Half Life has never innovated anything. It's just an FPS with a good story.
>>
>>722505723
This is how Gabe thinks about it

>I think that Half-Life represents a tool we have and promises made to customers to capitalize on innovation and opportunities to build game experiences that haven’t been [seen] previously.

>There is no shortage of those opportunities facing us as an industry right now.

>You can’t get lazy and say, ‘oh, we’re moving the story forward.’ That’s copping out of your obligation to gamers, right? … My personal failure was being stumped. I couldn’t figure out why doing Episode 3 was pushing anything forward.
>>
>>722505638
I swear the fatass himself said that the reason hl3 is not coming out cause they can't add anything innovative right now. He even started working with actual brain chips research just so one day we could play videogames without mouse and keyboard. If you ever hear about brainchips becoming a everyday thing then maybe, just maybe, hl3 might actually start production (and both the fatass and most of devs are still alive). But until then stfu, cause there is no reason to talk about it for foreseeable future.
>>
>>722505638
They should just make a normal fucking fps game that has impressive physics and graphics so they can stop putting stupid shit nobody cares about in a competitive shooter into CS2
>>
>>722506063
What did they add to CS2 that is considered "stupid shit" not counting more cosmetics which would happen anyway in CSGO? The smoke mechanic is objectively a great addition which majorly improved gameplay and everyone seems to agree on it
>>
the enemy ai could be leagues better, it could have been the Dark Souls of FPS, shootouts that will take dozens of attempts and the enemies surprised you every other time with some pattern that they hadn't done before, because you tried something different in an attempt

you could have a portal gun to set up angles to take out enemies from, you and the enemies taking pot shots at you through portals you set down

you could lean around corners and above cover, maneuver around in all manner of ways
>>
>>722506297
i feel like leaning would be weird in a half life game, its not slow like pubg or tarkov. has it ever been tried in a mod
>>
>>722505638
Could be VR Alyx 2.0.
That sad it will probably be some "ground breaking immersive mixed single and multiplayer experience, experience the game as you want to" that in reality will just be Destiny or The Division with a Half-Life 2 skin.

I don't think Valve is interested in making straight forward single player games anymore. Whatever it will be it needs to be a vehicle to either push VR headsets or loot boxes.

Have you been following any of the leaks? Nothing in the Source 2 engine strings points to their next HL project being a VR game
>>
>>722506820
>Have you been following any of the leaks?
Not really.
>Nothing in the Source 2 engine strings points to their next HL project being a VR game
So Destiny rip-off it is then.
>>
>>722505638
>Are there any innovations left in FPS games?
Of course there is. But you have to separate the idea of innovation being necessarily good or fun to play. If anything FPS games have been formulaic for decades. There are a million ways you can innovate on the basic premise of a first person camera and shooting.
>>
>>722505723
>Half Life has never innovated anything
Half Life 1 was 100% influential with how they used scripted sequences instead of cutscenes.
Half Life 2's physics were considered revolutionary at the time. Not to mention the innovation in graphics.
>>
>>722506531
Cyberpunk 2077 is very fast paced and it has leaning around cover, and ricocheting bullets to flush out enemies that decide to cover
>>
>>722505638
We could shoot fireballs with our brain if theres a few sensors around the VR headset. We could have liquid physics with interesting and strange properties like the ability to melt away metal, flood areas in non scripted ways, have oil slicks rest on the top of lakes, and set fire to grass and wood structures.

Suppose gabe switches it up and adds crafting, weapon modification, permanent upgrades and other light RPG elements? Will the purists hate it, or maybe they will be able to get by just fine with stock weapons?

Even if there isn't much innovation, a lot of people would feel satisfied with an ending that wraps up the story.

rpg elements are annoying i just wanna move and shoot

the constant need to push out some innovation is what killed episode 3
>>
>>722507649
>flood areas in non scripted ways
I miss the Flood gamemode for Garry's Mod where you had to build a raft out of scrap and survive the flood and battle other scrap rafts to be the last one standing.
>>
>>722507898
You have to think the words "FIREBALL" in your head instead of speaking it out loud into the microphone, and then your character casts fireball. Of course though if you download the Russian version of the game then you have to think fireball in Russian.
>>
I don't want "innovation" I want Valve to put out a SDK so people can make fun shit again.
It doesn't even have to strictly be an FPS game.

I guess they feel as though there's no reason to make a new SDK unless it's capable of doing things that are impossible on the Source engine.
I just want an SDK so someone can make a spiritual successor to Garry's Mod, now with 100% less Garry.
>>
>>722509396
in order for it to be fun it needs a good hl3 base same as hl2 was
>>
>>722510075
but HL2 base fucking sucked. All the mods for HL2 were absolute dogshit compared to the stuff that came out for HL1. The best mod that ever came out for HL2 was Garry's and that's only because people made funny videos with it.

If there are, I wouldn't expect Valve to think of them. HL2 is just a boring moviegame after all.
>>
>>722505638
If you die in the game you die in real life.
>>
>>722505885
that sentiment is how you go twenty years without concluding a story you started. Make a simple FEAR-esque FPS and call it a day already man.
>>
>>722510405
Movie games are good, you're just being contrarian
>>
>>722510267
Well no, Garrysmod was great because garry accidentally made something super accessible to developers by taping a Lua game engine to Source so you could develop actual extensions WITHOUT needing to use the Source SDK which was fucking huge.
HL2 was pretty good since it had a decent variety of reusable assets so that mod developers had a lot of shit to test their mods with without having to contact someone willing to use the Source SDK.
Valve kind of has this with Vscript but you still need someone to make maps which source is AGGRESSIVELY lacking at this point.
Most of the CS:2 mapping scene is porting shit, Alyx is boned because it's VR, people forgot SteamHome exists, and DOTA has 1 map

just make it like a half life 2/ s.t.a.l.k.e.r. hybrid with a large interconnected world with fun and unique out there sci-fi weapons. basically dark messiah of might and magic but with crazy sci fi weapons. just my two cents.

I like that HL2 still looks better than Doom 3/Quake 4 which were supposed to be all about graffix and required like double GPUs and shit back then.

an actual fun fast movement skill based multiplayer shooter with high player counts in teams?
>>
>>722505723
>Why does it need innovations.
because HalfLife is tech demo the series
>>
>>722511612
didnt doom 3 have more complex lighting though?
>>
>>722513076
yes, but the gameplay was limited to walk into room, wait for imp to teleport in, blast imp with shotgun.
>>
>>722505638
plenty of potential in vr, especially for story based fps
but instead it's all wasted on shitty fortnite clones, zombie games and escape rooms
>>
>>722506634
>That sad it will probably be some "ground breaking immersive mixed single and multiplayer experience, experience the game as you want to" that in reality will just be Destiny or The Division with a Half-Life 2 skin.
Minus the multiplayer part, that somewhat lines up with some very old leaks. Valve would probably guarantee that it's actually good though.
>>
Moss growing in real time.
>>
>>722513076
It did, yes, that was the whole gimmick of that iteration of id Tech. It still looked like shit compared to HL2.
>>
>>722516995
The lighting engineers at Valve like Ken Birdwell understood that the ultimate goal was looking good, not just technical complexity (probably helped that Birdwell started as an Arts major).
>>
>>722519539
Honestly that's a real sore spot for optimization in games these days, it's sort of disappointing that technically accurate lighting
>>
>>722520394
Is uh, seen above good looking, well optimized lighting.
I don't know why the other half of my post was clipped off
>>
>>722510550
He has no incentive to push out the next game if there’s no tech to show off
>>
>>722520471
ironically prebaked lighting looks about as good as raytracing with a fraction of the hardware requirements.
>>
VR is the innovation but no one has a clean 12' square in their home to properly play VR in.

also most AAA devs half-assed their VR games and now everyone thinks its a shitty gimmick again.
>>
>>722511834
>hasn't been done before
correct tf2 isn't fun
>>
>>722511834
do you think TF2 has fast movement?
>>
>>722505885
all gabe thinks about is food and money
>>
>>722520872
Not really. Sure you got stuff like explosive jumping and demo charging but other than those people move really slowly even scout who has to spam adadad to dodge. Not very interesting.
