besides the obvious that macgyver isn't really suited to being an action game, you have the issue that his solutions are almost always based on technical scientific/engineering knowledge, the way the show was written they had a couple advisors that would come up with some neat tidbit that could be heightened for a setpiece, it was in a way quasi edutainment. how do you turn the popscience knowlege into the universal cliche movie cartoon logic that players are actually able to engage with?

Combo Weapons in Dead Rising but way toned down and used for puzzles instead.
But that's still not an action game. I just don't think MacGyver would work in an action setting.

Well it's kind of Half life isn't it.I guess the question is how do you go further on minor science stuff without becoming point and click. I guess you'd need to make a mini-game for devices and IEDs and such. Sure why not, and maybe a story that isn't an embarressing power fantasy.
