As someone who could never overcome its mazes and puzzles in childhood, I picked up the Dark Forces remaster 30 years later and finally reached the end. It was okay, just okay. It's not as good as Doom, Duke, Shadow Warrior, Heretic, Blood or others I could mention. It's not as good as its sequels either. It doesn't belong in a top 10 of '90s shooters.

One issue is that to make the combat interesting you have to play on Hard mode, but in later levels this leads to some frustratingly unbalanced enemies like the Trandoshans that sight you in a nanosecond and nuke a quarter of your health. Sentry guns are similar in this regard, creating situations where you have to take damage to give it.

In what may be an unavoidable limitation of the Star Wars setting, the guns all feel a bit limp, as there's nothing really beefy like a super shotgun in the arsenal, and throwing thermal detonators is always awkward, sometimes suicidal – it didn't grow to be intuitive for me like the dynamite in Blood.

At one point there's a conspicuous and stupid departure from film continuity. Do you remember how Boba Fett died in Star Wars? That's right: he was killed by Kyle Katarn in the Imperial City some time before the events of Return of the Jedi. Stone dead, unambiguously deceased. Anyone who's seen the films will be scratching their head over this boss fight and its outcome.

The first two levels are all timers but then you go to the sewers and the game is ruined.

Whoever designed rooms where you can't hit the sentry guns because you can't aim high enough is an asshole
Also whoever decided that claymores should be in every fucking secret room with a shield powerup slightly in front of it so the sprite covers up the claymore sprite

>It's not as good as its sequels either
It's way better than the sequel

I like it far more than Heretic, but I also fucking hate Heretic. I think it's a pretty good game overall, but the sewer level is indeed a chore.

All the old star wars games aged like shit and are a chore to play. They were always just much worse versions of better games with star wars skin. Nostalgia for the time when you were a child is a terrible drug.

It was good enough for memedolorian to directly lift the dark trooper idea nearly thirty years later.
>>
Let me rephrase; would you rather talk about dark forces, or outlaws?
>>
>have to use grenades to hit enemies below you because you can't aim down that low
Boy, I sure love 90s FPSs!

False dichotomy. I choose neither.

Holy scrublords itt. It's a very easy video game. Git fucking gud.

I've beaten the game and I didn't enjoy it.

I can't agree with the guns not being beefy, mowing down hordes of stormtroopers with the rifle is fun, landing the perfect thermal det arc is fun, the meatshotting with the triple repeater is fun and effective, the god damned concussion rifle is amazing for the fx and sound alone, at the end where you're trading plasma with dark troopers and keeping them on target while weaving through their own shots is fun
Dark Forces is a good game. I don't even like Star Wars all that much but I like it and I love the sequel

Not Tie Fighter

It's been a long time since I played the game, but I always liked it. Never thought the levels were particularly challenging and the weapons were fun. I feel like people's opinions of certain things get distorted when they grow up and everyone collectively agree something was super hard or confusing like the Water Temple in OOT.

Not Rogue Squadron

The best thing about Dark Forces is that we got Outlaws because of it.

It's not better than Jedi Outcast though
Jedi Outcast is an easy contender for best Star Wars game period

The worst part on hard mode was having to fist fight a million of those lizard fuckers. And since there's no savescumming in the remaster, if you fuck up you have start all over again. That part took me ages.
