do you think Todd regrets making Starfield. Imagine if all that time and effort would be put into The Elder Scrolls VI, instead they wasted like a decade to release a mediocre spaceshit no one remembers

I think the only regret with Starfield is it had to run on the Series S so they needed to cut some things and downgrade a little. Hopefully the Xbox hardware division goes like rumors say so future games aren't restricted by console hardware limitations.

Starfield is the most successful game of the generation and it's still getting updates. If they regret it they would have abandoned it but they learnt a lot from making the game and it will make the next elder scrolls better.

It's a good example of the difference between a narcissist and someone who is merely a selfish egotist. The latter would be able to do some basic cost-benefit analysis and realize how much richer they'd be if they just made Elder Scrolls VI or Fallout 5. Instead the narcissist has to pretend like making Starfield was a good idea.

There's no evidence Bethesda has ever learned anything poistive from previous failures. At least not in the past two decades.

If you played Starfield it's 2 steps forward one step back. It's clear that they used everything they learnt from the previous games and attempted to improve and fix things but their new systems also missed the point and caused the overall experience to go down. Objectively, Starfield is their best game yet but they made mistakes about it.

Basically what the other anon said.
Collecting the artifacts makes you a Starborn (tm) which, when you have them all, lets you move on to another alternate universe, slowly becoming closer to God.
In practice you run around collecting artifacts which give you Skyrim shouts while a couple dudes basically tell you they'll kill you to get them before you, but never manage to do it because Bethesda writing.
There are a couple main side quests which are far better, one involving choosing sides between space pirates or space anti-pirates and being a double double agent for one or the other. And another which involves basically the Alien aliens and finding out their source and how to get rid of them.

I paid full price for Starfield. I regret that choice. I would, however, recommend it if you get it on a $20-$30 sale. Because the exploration suffered so much in order for the hundreds of planets thing to work, its just generally worse than every other Bethesda openworldRPG. But its not the worst thing you could play if you are itching to play a game like that.
>>

Would it had been better received in 2011? Are we just too spoiled by games without loeading screens but with dramatic kinography during cut scenes?
>>
>>722520718
Having at least one or two intelligent alien species would've been nice. In addition to not having Emil doing any of the writing.
>>
>>722517263
No I think Todd regrets not moving on from Gamebryo the day after Skyrim launched. ES 6 is going to absolutely disappoint everyone and make piles of money.
>gamebryo can't do ladders
Lol
>>
I have over 100 hours playing Starfield and only 20 hours of that is loading screens.
>>
>>722521298
If anyone bothers to mod Starfield to any major extent (unlikely) its still 3 years from any big project being completed. That big paid one is mostly just using existing or unused assets.
>>
I've been actually enjoying this game but more in a "watching a car crash" kinda way.
Full price is absolutely too much for this, but $30? Sure. I've spent more on worse things.
This game would be WAY better if the writing wasn't such complete garbage.
>>
>>722521351
It definitely would have. Bethesda is full of chopped uncs, they havent kept up with the games industry since the 2010s and their games are extremely outdated for people in their 50s. Modern gamers are busy playing actual good open world games now like Cyberpunk 2077, Red dead redemption 2 and elden ring.
>>
>>722521380
No it wouldn't.
I actually like the used future aesthetic, and adding some tacked on aliens undermines the whole thing.
>>
>>722521214
>>722520985
They fixed the simple "Settlement Link" system where linked settlements shared resources automatically by making a system where individual resources are manually moved without filters or limiters which results in them clogging up and shutting down.

They fixed being able to keep the same gun throughout the game by upgrading it by adding immutable weapon and armor tiers.

They fixed the exploration by having 10 or so Points of Interest on randomly generated maps instead of hundreds of points of interest on one big map.
>>
>>722521390
There are ladders in Starfield. Also vehicles. Both things people like you said was impossible to do.
>>
>>722521351
>Are we just too spoiled by games without loading screens but with dramatic kinography during cut scenes?
It's what I've found. After Starfield I found a lot of people here actually begging for "illusion". I saw people say a mod that made the ship traveling through blinding white light for 5 seconds was better. I saw people say they rather fly towards a planet for 2 minutes straight in No Man Sky than a 5 second loading screen. Then a year later people swore none of that was said. I really started distrusting everyone's taste in games after that.
>>
>>722521561
The aliens wouldn't be "tacked on".
>>

>>
>>722521351
lol no, in 2011 people in the biz knew how to write games without any of the pozzed shit you have now shoved down your throat every 5 minutes.
>>
>>722521693
Oh just like the cat and lizard people in ES aren't tacked on?
Of course, of course, how could I have forgotten the deep lore implications of "drug addict cat people"
>>
>>722519960
It's complicated
Basically the game is about what if New Game Plus actually happened in the universe.
A bunch of explorers find these mysterious artifacts left by people that have not been explained and it sets off a search to find out what they do
It's a key to the center of the galaxy, which kills you and sends you to a new universe so you can see what happens there. Naturally a bunch of people also want to do that so they will try to kill you for the artifacts you're holding.
If it sounds a whole lot like the central conceit of No Man's Sky it probably isn't a coincidence.
The DLC suggests the grav drive is the key to a lot of these mysteries but once again doesn't answer anything
>>
>>722521160
I honestly found it better than most space exploration games. They all suck but Starfield is the only one with an end and doesn't rely on pure grind. Having quests, characters, an actual story you can complete, fun combat made me realize how bloated ED and NMS was. Then you start realizing the other space games are just arcade ship combat and MENUS THE GAME and the whole genre is really on fire.
>>
>>722521817
The lesson in Starfield's main story quest is appreciating the connections and people you've met in your journey instead of blindlessly throwing everything away for the next one. You are given a choice for a reason.
>>
>>722521471
I'll be waiting for the star wars overhaul mod to purchase starfield. Even then the game has to be $20 or less.

It's what I've come to realize. It's a genre that has the most traps for shitty game design. I truly believe Bethesda made the first actual full space exploration game that's actually balanced with content but they still fucked it up. Every other space game is "play for it X but no you don't get Y, Z, A, B, C or D." NMS overloads you with shallow shitty features and it has the worst POIs in any game I've ever seen but its fun to play once a year when there's an update.

Space is inherently too big to make a game about. You have to make a lot of compromises along the way and it's impossible to please everyone. Meanwhile fantasy games are simple because they can just take place on a island and you just design around that.

Yeah lack of Aliens wasn't the real issues. The problem with their factions is that there's no real conflict. The UC is just some boring variation of the UN with no real competition. They should have had competing powers, like in Dune or Game of Thrones.
>>
>>722522647
Exactly. To make it feel like space you have to make an amount of content that's impossible to do, hence the amount of procgen used in a lot of the space exploration games. A lot gets sacrificed by every game that tries.

I'm sure Todd doesn't like the discourse online but then at the same time every game he's ever made was shat on online and then played for years and praised. I think he knows more could've been done with the game and that's what's killing him. And now he has to make the piggies happy with TES6.

imo Starfield is a game that shouldn't have been attempted in the current era.
It's a game that they could make and that could work well some time after there's a huge transition to AI in game development- like a more advanced and complex version of No Man's Sky, where it BOTH doesn't impose limits on you all over the place, there are seamless transitions between everything instead of loading screens, and the universe is full of what feels like unique and meaningful content and characters and stories that are worth exploring and engaging with.
It doesn't work right now, when all the content has to be either hand-crafted by human devs or be bland and repetitive.
Same reasons Star Citizen will probably be a huge letdown if it gets a proper 1.0 launch any time soon
