What is the best Yakuza game that isn't 0 or 7?
>>
>>722523263
lost judgement (yep, i'm based)
>>
Shenmue
>>
Original Ishin
>>
>>722523354
He was right. Fuck Yagami.
>>
>>722523263
2 (PS2) is the best game in the franchise
>>
>>722523263
honestly 8 is better than 7 at everything, except the story.
>>
>>722523908
or the setting
or the substories
>>
>>722523908
I honestly don't get a lot of the hate for 8's story. I don't think I like it better than 7 but it's not bad.

>>722524013
I think the only substory I remember from 8 is the one with the yakuza guy who wears a diaper. That one was good.
>>
>>722524173
>here's your fanbase
Correct about the characters?
>>
>>722523263
6 unironically
>>
>>722524134
I dunno, I thought 8 had a really bad story. The game is like 100 hours long and there's really not many things that actually happen. Whats worse is that the antagonists somehow feel underbaked despite all the runtime the game had to develop them.
Also the nuclear waste disposal thing just feels utterly retarded. Why would governments agree to dump their nuclear waste without actually checking the place out first? The fact that the barrels were just in the caves was hilarious. Of all the yakuzas they ship there, what if one of them sneaks in a phone and exposes them? Would it really be worth for the US government to save a few million by not properly disposing of nuclear waste, when they could get caught dumping in random caves in the middle of the ocean?
Also, this "super secret" island has perfectly cellphone signal apparently as Chitose can just casually livestream from it.
Ebina is an absolutely terrible final boss for Kiryu as well, they had zero connection yet the fight symbolized Kiryu carrying all the sins of the yakuza collectively.... it was such a huge waste of an opportunity.

>>He was right.
>Accomplished absolutely nothing in over a decade, people didn't even know he was doing anything despite how proud he was of what he was doing.
>Ruined the life of someone who was actively tackling corruption in the government and also kind of turned her into a hypocrite too.
>His entire plan with Ehara accomplished nothing and ruined another man's life.
>His actions led to an innocent person's death and nearly got Yagami killed three times even though he's completely innocent thereby showing he's a hypocrite whose values and "justice" are actually pretty flexible.
>Pins everything on a bunch of people who were trying to reform or simply live their lives and will actively cause Mamiya's child and husband to potentially have their lives ruined via guilt by association even though they have nothing to do with anything.
>Doesn't even try to change laws on the books or rally to have them changed using his past as a motivator and story for others to rally behind.
Yagami accomplished more to stop bullying in a few months at Seiryo High than Kuwana accomplished in like a decade and actually saw the results of it too.
>>
>>722524134
>>I honestly don't get a lot of the hate for 8's story.
>Ichiban's entire reason for going to Hawaii is basically an afterthought the instant he meets Akane even though she's a major part of the main story.
>You don't even meet her or Lani in the ending or epilogue, you're given a throwaway line by Nanba in the epilogue even though they're still major parts of the story and people Ichiban was actively helping leading to a very unsatisfying conclusion to that story.
>Wong Tou's son is set up as a major character we will be looking for, and then they not only proceed to never speak of him once after that, but they then proceed to only remember he exists during the Nele Island gauntlet that they didn't finish that storyline so Chitose randomly finds him in a building and has to explain to everyone who he is because the entire cast forgot they were looking for him.
>Kiryu has every reason to want to stop Buraisu for the nuclear waste and Seiryo plan let alone the Lani stuff but instead is given Ebina as some sort of collective guilt of the yakuza he didn't lead.
>Ichiban not only doesn't even know Ebina is his half-brother, but goes after Buraisu despite having next to no reason to want to go after him and Ebina being his half-brother would have made far more sense to go after since he's the direct reason why the guy at the start stopped going straight and then proceeded to have his life ruined.
>Ichiban forgives Eiji despite Eiji murdering Hanawa and Wong Tou in front of him, sending hitmen after him and his friends multiple times, tried to poison them twice, laughed when he threw a pipe bomb at Ichiban and his friends which Ichiban thought would kill them all, pushed Lani down the stairs in a wheelchair, ruined Chitose's life, and he also revealed that from the start he only got close to Ichiban to betray him.
>Every chapter after the split is functionally filler and accomplishes nothing outside of finding Lani and losing her again.

They really toned down Akiyama a lot in the updated localization for 4. They removed it from the dialogue box but you can still hear him say "rape" which is hilarious
>>
>>722527280
I know they were trying to go for some kind of "Ichiban is literally Jesus" sort of thing, but it just further goes to show they don't actually understand Christianity when they try to take something from it and write it for their story.
There are evil and vile people out there in the world who despite you willing to just forgive them for anything they ever did are not actually going to change at all and will just continue to take advantage of you. You cannot hand out forgiveness if they are not willing to accept it in the first place cause they don't even believe they did something they should be forgiven for.
There was no strength in that. They just made him look like a cuck who let himself get beat up by the crowd for no reason.

Meant to say "every Ichiban chapter after the split".
>The Life Links make zero sense after chapter 12, especially since you can ignore starting it until then when everyone knows Kiryu is alive and was literally on national television.
>When you get to the end of the Life Links (Parts 9 and 10 only unlock after the reveal by the way) the Daidoji are now pissed that Akiyama and Date were trying to set Kiryu up to meet Haruka and about to execute Date with Kiryu having to give a speech about how he will never meet with Date or anyone ever again even though literally two chapters later Kiryu is given a carte blanche forgiveness from the Daidoji.
>Memoirs of a Dragon are even stupider if you leave them to the end of the game because you get scenes like this and Kiryu actively telling everyone he's not alive despite looking 1:1 like his old self and just having been outed on national TV.
>The entire Nele Island plan makes no sense because it was all above board and done in the public view yet no one chose to inspect Nele Island or anything as they were actively transferring over nuclear waste.
>Buraisu's plan makes even less sense because the man is immortal due to his ambergris tea yet somehow doesn't understand that in less than a decade he's going to have so many dead bodies piling up on Nele Island, missing people, people dying of radiation poisoning, and Nele Island and the surrounding water will be massively irradiated because he's not actually containing it causing not only his entire plan to collapse, but also get the actual federal government on him on top of the Japanese government which he has no control over.
>Saeko ghosts Ichiban for an entire year because he didn't say "I love you" even though she's known him for four years at that point and knows he's autistic.

8's story is full of holes, sidelines Ichiban, is paced terribly, and makes no sense when you actually spend time thinking about it.

The best parts of IW were Kiryu's sections imo. That's where all the effort went. I feel bad for people that started with Like a Dragon and went right to Infinite Wealth expecting another great Ichiban game.

I don't even think that's really true though. Kiryu gets reused maps, reused minigames, no substories but the memoir/memory scenes which are mostly reused models anyway
Like the Hawaii side is obviously where 90% of the effort went in terms of production
>>
>>722529848
I remember them saying that Ichi will lead the series for the next 10 years but they clearly can't let go of Kiryu for good. I thought Like a Dragon was their best selling game next to 0? They shouldn't be so scared that games won't sell without Kiryu as the main guy.

Yeah, Kuwana is really just a loser that couldn't own up to the fact that he fucked up as a teacher due to incompetence. Instead of moving on with his life, he gets obsessed with killing people as a petty revenge for what happened to make himself feel better. The fact that he still goes through with a job even if the family backs out of it and tells him to fuck off shows that he isn't doing this to help people get revenge when the authorities fail them, it's just to satisfy himself. He tries to justify it with dumb logic like "well they didnt turn me in after i did it anyway, so they're actually totally thankful and really did want me to do it" and I hate that Yagami never challenges him on it.

The effort definitely did not go into Kiryu's sections but his section is still more entertaining than Ichiban's if you've actually played all the Yakuza games. Seeing Kiryu reflect on his life and choices, revisit his past acquaintances and finding out how he touched their lives was very nice. You're more invested compared to Ichiban's story where he's just going on a wild goose chase for his mom while getting harassed by a fucking vtuber and stopping some 100 year old guy from dumping nuclear waste on an island.
>>
>>722542443
Yakuza 4 had a whole questline about busting a shitskin trafficking ring and helping illegals. And outside of that questline there were bleeding heart moments about shitskin families being broken up by the immigration offices that deported one or both parents, but left their kids in Japan.

ackshully in Japan these are considered right-leaning actions, so Kiryu would vote republican if he moved to the US

>>722543093
It's funny how Kiryu doesn't really look older than Akiyama here. Like if anything, Akiyama looks older.

Not even in my top 5. Combat system sucks.

Now that the Ghost of Yotei is all over the catalog, I might as well drop this here:
https://jp.ign.com/ryu-ga-gotoku-ishin-kiwami/62638/news/ghost-of-tsushima
>It was the success of Ghost of Tsushima that led Sega to decide to release Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin! Kiwami in the West.
>In an interview with Fanbyte , Yakuza Studio president Masayoshi Yokoyama said, "Seeing the success of Ghost of Tsushima, which was created by an American developer and features a very Japanese setting, gave us confidence that Yakuza Ishin! Kiwami could be a success in the US as well."

Japs on 5ch are saying that in turn Yotei appears to be ripping off some combat gimmicks from Ishin. If RGG didn't have their schedule packed between Virtua Fighter, STH, Kiwami 3 and having to deliver Y9 after that, Yokoyama would probably jump the bandwagon with a Kenzan port.
>>
>>722553656
I don't think they are just going to bandwagon with samurai spin-off every time they release new GoT lol
They bandwagoned back then because the game was a new sensation, a squeal that's more of the same is obviously not going to have the same effect on then

8 made me sick of Ichiban's retarded ass, a shounen protagonist like that isn't fit for a series like Yakuza, unless they get rid of him all games are doomed to be memes like 8

Out of the characters as they were implemented, yeah. During Y1 development the first draft of Majima was more fucked up, he was supposed to have darkened skin from alcoholic liver disease, his whole crazy shtick was connected to already dying and not giving any fucks anymore. Wild how he went from that to being eternally young and fit.

Well, Kiryu does seem to smoke a bit less with each game. He seems to smoke the most in Y1 and Y0, and then he seems to cut down a little bit over time. At the very least, he's not seen lighting one up every other scene or during his idle actions in the Dragon Engine games.
