is piracy immoral ?
>>

yes, but that won't stop me
>>

it's your duty

All art and entertainment belongs to all people. Sharing it doesn't diminish it, therefore it's evil to NOT share.
>>
Every single game I've bought in the past 10 years has been one I pirated first.

Why does the answer matter?

Depends who you ask and who you're stealing from in terms of where the money would've ultimately gone.

Jesus pirated things canonically and was free of sin.
>>
>>722531106
Only if the devs aren't already big and famous and the game isn't a guaranteed success.
>>
>>722532187
Jesus/God was a real bitch if you think about it. A torturous but finite experience to end a more or less pleasant existence on Earth and not even visiting Hell(?) compared to the billions that supposedly spend an eternity there, some of those after a truly horrible life on Earth.
>>
>>722531106
If it actually had an impact on the actual devs and not the executives that think about bottom lines; sure

Otherwise, it's victimless, and as long as you're not chest thumping about it like a idiot, you're fine.
>>
Funny PC fats killed the AAA PC exclusive market and now they only get indie games and console ports
>>
>>722531684
No, looking is looking. But if you're asking if it is, then it is. No normal person has such images saved on their hard drive.

ever play earthbound? there's this part in the game where, early on, ness and friends encounter a food stand that was just left there, with items free for the taking. there's a sign next to the basket that says something like
>please pay for the items here, we trust you
the basket is unattended and there's nothing stopping you from taking your share of free resources. however, if you do, you get caught by and must fight an npc who is monitoring the stand (because he's a busybody fuck who wants to enforce rules that nobody really gives a fuck about). it's sort of similar to the meme about japanese vending machines, and how such things can exist in a "high trust society". how it relates to piracy is
>the stakes are low
stealing a sandwich from an unattended food stand or breaking into a vending machine to get your share are petty crimes. they're not exactly good for society, but there are much worse things going on. at best, you can view piracy as petty thievery.
>the damage is negligible
even if you do view it as thievery or a lost sale, it only becomes a problem when the proprietors of legitimate storefronts are so affected that they can no longer do business because they're losing out to said "crime" and we all know that this is by far not the case. there are far, far more people playing and PURCHASING video games today than ever before, so any supposed harm that piracy is doing is so miniscule that it can be disregarded.

that said, if you like something, you should buy it, but only if you have the means to do it. gaben once said that piracy is a service problem; maybe that's true, but the publishers don't care about service, they care about profit, so look at all the shitty business practices they employ to reap cash at every opportunity, and to the detriment of your experience as a consumer. piracy is, then, a consumer rights problem on top of being a service problem.

the fbi only goes after people who compete with them
>>
>>722531106
Pirates were never evil, they were branded by governments because governments had all the riches; it became easy and profitable to ally itself with poor people and havenots that would never know the difference between drifters and genuine thieves.

Pirating is the act of stealing. What Jesus did was to replicate, create. He was a creator.
You don't go to jail for creating new things.

How can it be stealing if the original copy is still there? Sounds more like...replicating?

If buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't theft, and therefore, isn't immoral. Simple as.
>>
I liked the part where Jesus walked on water. You think if he decided to swim to a pool, he'll just walk on it instead? Or probably not. Piracy isn't stealing, if it's all you can afford, I'd say go ahead. Pretty sure the big man himself understands.

>Indie games that have effort, such as Silksong or Pizza Tower
Yes
>Trash garbage indie games like Deltarune or Yiik
No, but why would you even waste time pirating that shlock?
>Games you can buy new in a store as a hard copy
Yes
>Games that only exist as digital/live service
No, because you don't own it so what are they selling?
>Retro games
I'd argue pirating older games is outright moral good. Not only does it keep the old work appreciated, it can drive business. Nintendo didn't sell out of Lucas Amiibos from legal Mother 3 sales.
>Remasters that replace the original game from sale
No
>Remasters that have high effort and still allow the original to exist (these are rare, but are out there like RE2make)
Yes
>A game that no longer gives the original developers any money, but to some faggot publisher that bought out the original studio
No
>Movies and TV shows
No, I think the sale exists for the convenience and quality of an official pressed disc. Sometimes the pirated movie is better, but in my experience 9/10 times I'll buy a movie I pirated for better image quality and special features.

So TL;DR pay devs that put in good work for games you can buy and keep right now so more games like it get made, everything else go nuts
