It's a way better RPG than Zelda.

well duh, zelda isn't an RPG

I love how Ultima threads inevitably devolve into Spoony discussions. Proving that the series has no relevancy today.

It's a very different RPG and it's done something unique among video games, with not really any other game committing to the morality bit in the same manner. It's hard to call it a "better game" or "better RPG" because you could argue about other games being more-RPG-like depending on your description.

Also, while U4 is unique, I don't know that I'd recommend it over a handful of other RPGs. Definitely in the top 10 I'd recommend someone play, but I don't know if doing something unique makes it strictly the best.

I've played thru Ultima 3 and most of Ultima 4. It's on the bucket list to finish the whole series, I'm just enjoying Wizardry more for the moment.

I wouldn't recommend Ultima 3, unless you really, really like grinding. Well, that was required for buying stat points on the NES version. The original might be different.

Are you playing wizardy in release order?
I havent started it yet but I was thinking of starting with 6 since I read the first 5 games are much grindier and unfair
>>
>>722549712
rpgs are made to be discussed not played.

Maybe but I can't be arsed watching a 4 hour video on it to find out

It's been so long I don't remember who killed the stable hand. Guess it's time to figure out how to play this game on a modern computer.

Yes, release order.

Wiz1-3 and Wiz5 are all pretty similar. From what I've heard, Wiz5 is the best of the classic games. Wiz6-8 are a bit different, focusing on running around the world as opposed to clearing floors and progressing thru a dungeon. I've played most of Wiz7 when I was younger, loved the game, but it's a very long one.

Wizardy 6 is a bit hard to get into since it looks pretty terrible, but if you can put up with that it's pretty neat. Any of them are going to be kind of grindy, especially at the start, since it takes some time to just not get immediately killed. Both Wiz6 and Wiz7 have am unlimited healing fountain near the start (Wiz7 has one in the "newbie dungeon" nearby the start) so just hang around there to make sure nobody dies.

Ultima is overhyped.

In the course of my career as a vidcon specialist (my own coinage, spend it wisely), I have never seen such blatant and frankly sickening ignorance as that exhibited by the "people" (if, in fact, they are homo sapiens at all, as their intelligence implies elsewise) that claim that Zelda is not an RPG. There is nothing that Shigeru "Shiggy" Miyamoto could possibly do to make the vidcon any more of an RPG as it meets every single criterion for being one, particularly that it takes place in an imaginary realm with a fantastical beastiary, the damsel villain ratio is at or above standards, and that the core emphasis of the gameplay is on bedazzling all foes with impeccable swords and sorcery. Furthermore, this line of thought can be extended to all vidcons in which the player controls a character (hence, roleplaying), though I cringe slightly at the thought of such mundane vidcons as Madden being RPGs, as they do not even include exotic weaponry such as the tonfa.

I was thinking about console RPGs, where I'd recommend Saga Frontier 2 (unique skill learning system) along with sequels, Suikoden 5 (definitely different skill/rune assignment system, good focus on all characters in large cast, play on an emulator because the original PS2 has long load times) and maybe Suikoden 3, and Grandia 1 / 2 / 3 (best use of NPC and environment interaction in a JRPG).

I've not played many CRPGs and so don't have much to say about them. Planescape Torment, Deus Ex, Vampire Bloodlines, and the regular titles are what I'd probably recommend as safe bets.

Zelda was influenced by WESTERN RPGs.
